Benjamin Schmid (vl.) - Spanish Radio and Television Orchestra - Carlos Kalmar (cond.) Recorded live in concert on XXI.X.2011 at the Teatro Monumental, Madrid.
I come back often to this . This month I'm getting the score nd his piano etudes which were the first piece of modern music I bought . Way before Prokofiev , Sessions and Ginastera's piano sonatas . It is Oct . 2020 and i'm still mesmerized by this as wella s Marsalis' 2016 violin concerto ! Schmid is totally engrossing .His communication, intonation ,technique are perfect !
What a gem! So much character from the violinist with total control of the instrument, not just getting along with the tune that perhaps could easily sound fun. Bravi for the wonderful orchestra and the soloist, and also the magnificent work of the composer.
Had never heard of William Bolcom until MPR played one of his rags today. Pure chance that I came across this magnificent performance. What a totally intriguing blend of styles in this concerto. The soloist, Mr. Schmid certainly deserves wider acclaim.
Fell in love with Bolcolm 20 years or more hearing the fantastically engaing piano etudes the found the rags .I loved this from the first note.Years ago his McTeague was on television. He is our preeminent really AMERICan composer.Jazz and american speech is all over his work With Jacob Druckman he is one of my masters !!!
@@andrewpetersen5272 Can you not read English? He along with Corigliano,Joan tower,Adolphus Hailstork and a few others is one of the great living American composers.
The music is serious, lirical and ironically jazzy at the same time. A good mix of Ives, Barber, Schostakovitsch, Prokofiev, sometimes Ravel. Really GOOD one. Complicated enough with warm, humanly content. Music for people. Absolutely grandiose geiger! Iron intonation, resilient, taut and light rhythm -- and comprehensive, pervasive understanding of the text! Never heard him before, now will do. The orchestra is good but I feel could do better had they had more time for rehearsing. ...It penetrates soul -- I'm listening for the third time in a row...Thank you and my congratulations, Herr Schmid ! -- and, of course, Mr.Bolcom!
More videos on TH-cam such as Zimmermann playing Shostakovich, Stefan Jackiw with Korngold all making glorious music with this orchestra is much more fufilling than the concerts of some few 'famed' soloists of this day playing what doesn't sound as heartfelt commitment not only to convey the music with their thorough study and thoughts of the work, but presenting it to an audience whereever it might be.
Amazing. Bolcom is new is me. I love fusions of musical styles when done well. I think some classical music fans don’t always appreciate the complexity of jazz. This puts that to rest.

Have loved this for years, I have no idea why more people do not play it.

Fantastic! What a great composer is William Bolcom. Masterfully advocated by this tremendous violinist.
It's always refreshing to hear a new, high-quality work. The violinist, new to me as well. was terrific.
superbe concerto , magnifique, un bijou

What a wonderful concerto, beautifully performed and recorded. A Gem!
Wonderful. Direct, honest, vigorous, heartfelt.
I loved this concerto--and have never seen it programmed by any symphony orchestra.
The tone of the violin is clear. Good concerto.

Great review! You are an astute listener, obviously a musician.
