A fine performance of a fascinating concerto-symphony. However the videographer didn't know where to point the cameras. Shame.....

I had the pleasure of being part of a small compostion class given by Lutoslawski in which he analysed The Michaux Poems and Jeux Venetiens. I was so interested in the way the Michaux was notated that Witold lent me his own score overnight for me to study. That is one of the unforgettable moments in my life. I love his music.

My wife and I attended the premiere of the 4th in LA conducted by the composer. Because we paid for Founders tickets we got to meet him. When I was in grad school I analyzed several of his compositions…..obviously a big fan.

De Martinu-symfonien worden nog altijd niet naar waarde geschat.

Door zoveel muziek te schrijven in zijn carriere heeft Hindemith het zijn publiek niet makkelijk gemaakt,want vele van zijn werken zijn niet zo interessant. Het gaat er echter om de pareltjes die er wel tussen zitten te ontdekken en uit te voeren. "Die Harmonie der Welt" is zo een pareltje. Prachtig begin met die donderende percussie. Ik heb onlangs zijn vioolconcert ontdekt; nog zo een werk dat onder de radar blijft.

Nessa estupenda obra do Compositor polonês, temos também uma grande homenagem a B. Bartók, com sua rítmica Eslava complexa e imprevisível.

Regência sensível e marcante de Hannu Lintu. A extraordinária capacidade de Lutoslawski de criar livres associações de timbres e harmonias, torna essa sinfonia uma jóia das contradições contemporâneas. tudo aqui é matemático e ao mesmo tempo livre, como no universo de Boulez. Fantástico. Adoro essa obra.

De Bartók a Berg, tudo é revisitado nessa extraordinária obra contemporânea!!!!!

Indescritível a regência de Lutoslawski, frente a um grupo de músicos tão bem ensaiados e competentes. Uma aula de orquestração e complexidade sonora. Aqui juntamos todos os grandes mestres, de Bach a Boulez, de Stravinsky a Crumb. Fantástico!!!!

Oportunidade maravilhosa de ouvir e assistir à obra e regência de seu compositor Lutoslawski. 1973 não está muito distante no tempo, mas uma gravação como essa é histórica. Parabéns ao canal.

Technically assured, knows the score and provides his impressively secure sense of line but this is again all Germanic force and drive over the music’s own remarkable character that Thomson and others are alive to; Weller is a degree Furtwanglerized, turning everything into blood and passion. The music indeed has an essential onward impulse but is Czech lightheaded mania, bliss and breeze, not this Teutonic militarism and killer triumph with even the slow mov failing to breathe as it clearly should; no excuse at this late date for not understanding the spirit of Martinu. Made it to the end but exhausting instead of uplifting.

The Great Great Grandchild of Beethoven's Sixth, Lutoslawski's Third Symphony is the soundtrack of the 20th Century Mind.

Petrassi, one of the most interesting Italian composers of the XX Century, together with Malipiero, Berio, Ghedini, Dallapiccola and Maderna. Amazing generation!

Isn't it a shame for such a great piece of orchestral music to be ruined by excessive dynamic range compression like this? The most dynamic music in the world, turned into a sausage in which every pianissimo is equal to every fortissimo...

A une première écoute il y a trop de choses dans ce concerto. Décousu, beaucoup de belles choses et grande orchestration, mais on aimerait plus de construction, comme s il y avait trop d'idées mises toutes à la suiute l'une de l'autre.

They left out the music from the taxicab scene- "I cudda been a contender!"- the most moving part of the score!

I do not intend to critisize anything but I’m afraid I do not understand this kind of music. What am I supposed to enjoy? To me, the pleasure of music is melody and harmony. But I hear no melody here and the harmony is monotonous throughout. What is the pleasure of this music? I see that every performer (including the conductor) passionately enjoys playing; this may be the piece for the performers?

I am a big fan of Zimmermann, but I am not wild about this performance. I feel he makes the mistake that many do with the last movement: he plays it too fast and it seems to fall apart a little.

Bombastic and textured but also melodic at the same time makes it very interesting and involving piece.

One of the the performances of this. Who are these guys?

I don't like the swift tempo Zimmerman takes with this concerto, especially in the opening. However, I love his bold playing & powerful bow. This is one of the most difficult concerti. Besides being very chromatic, it's technically challenging as well. My favorite version is the one with Pinchas Zukerman & Zuban Mehta (1979). I can stand to listen to this one again & again because of his phenomenal playing.
