The amendment that passed in 2023 dropped my property taxes from $1350 to $900. That was just the elimination of the portion that normally went to Dallas ISD. I am in an older home in south Dallas that was built in 1954. This year, for 2024, they raised all of the other portions that make up the annual tax bill. This year has a $60 increase. They are allowed to get away with this because there was no language in the bill that prohibits the county or city from raising the other taxes to make up for the loss of the school taxes created by the new homestead exemption increase. On top of that they need to stop using Zillow as the source for the valuations. Use the sale price of the home when you bought it, not what some 3rd or 4th party with no actual interest thinks it should be sold for tomorrow.
In Arizona the thing that's killing use is the Bond override on the school tax. I have a base school tax of $120 then the bond override will be $280. And you get this on each level of school funding.
Let me know if I'm getting this correct. My understanding is that even if you file a late homestead, they can go back up to 2 years. If the appraised amount is say 150,000, then they would have to deduct 100,000 from the appraised amount, leaving it 50,000. From that 50,000, is what they have to work with percentages for all the taxing entities and to let you know what is owed for each of them. Am I getting close to understanding this? Thanks so much
Hum, I recently did a homestead, yet for 2022=2023, there is nothing showing any 100,000 exemption on the appraised value? There is a 40,000 exemption for 2022, but 2023 is untouched and the numbers do not match up. I try my best to keep the peace, but I also think it's important to know and understand the numbers to know what you need to pay. Is there another office I may call about this? Thanks.....I also have an old 1950's house btw
Fire video bro I appreciate you putting all this info together. I live in San Antonio I’ll let you know what my effective tax rate fluctuates when I get my info on it.
Thank you! I hope it’s helpful! Definitely come back and let me know when you find out. I’ll probably need to make an update to this at some point and it’ll Be good to have some examples from different parts of the state.
Washington has in general higher property price than Texas. Even though the rate in WA is lower, the grand total you pay for property tax is probably higher in WA. Not to forget about the ~10% sales tax here in WA.

$ 26K A YEAR PROPERTY TAXES IS ABSOLUTELY NUTS. Texas has made Bernie sanders proud 😅
Homeowner insurance went up 13% and took my tax break savings away. Thanks State Farm
Actual dollars and not percentage? I’m guessing the most expensive property will have more actual dollars saved.

Austin = California lite

Sounds like that works a little differently there. So you're paying the $280 multiple times? I need to look into this and do a comparison.
Taxes are absolutely raising home prices and the cost of home ownership.

I’m glad it was helpful! Do you currently live in Texas?
How you expect us to understand by saying this number that ... this number this but can't see the numbers - you should find a better way to explain.
Why does Florida and Washington have lower property taxes than Texas?
