Because education benefits everyone, even if they don't have kids or their kids are out of the house. Why should people with a vasectomy pay it? Why should people with no kids pay it? These questions are obviously ridiculous, just like yours. Obviously, people like you didn't plan for retirement. You're so eager to collect pension and social security and yet so averse to the idea of taxes to make the schools better while benefitting from an economy supported by those same taxes for 70 years. WEAK.
Why should the younger generation pay for Medicare?
Why should taxpayers pay for education that is rotting kids brains, police who let kids die (Uvalde), and electrical grids that collapse?

Now imagine eliminating property tax completely all the way down to the country level. Imagine how many more people can now afford to buy their homes and the elderly can now breathe a lot easier.

I’m sick of these high property tax bills and I don’t even have kids. Cut property taxes!!! I’d rather pay income tax it would never be this burdensome. This is ridiculous. Time to move. Texas has some of the worst property tax rates in the country

Right. I was 2600, mortgage company estimated 3200. Ins bill came, 4500. So since county tax assessment program screwed up I am mow over 4000 minus in escrow. Only 500 payment increase for the next year.
Remember back in 2019 they tried to raise the sales tax, so they could give residents a property tax cut? Because they couldn’t do it without raising another tax. Give it a few years. That Covid money will be gone, and they will add other additional taxes, just watch!

This is pure window dressing. The local CADs and ISDs will calculate a tax rate that will eclipse any savings for the homeowner. FOX4 should do an in depth story on how there is little control over these entities. And do a follow up story next year, with local homeowners, to see the actual savings.

There should be no property tax on your home or property, a real governor would abolish all taxes on your home and property!!!

I benefited with a 120K property.
The majority of property taxes is for public education.. which is failing and not appreciated by the students or parents to receive a free education.. extremely over paid school, administration’s, and teachers, … most teachers make above the national income for households!!! Let alone poorer neighborhoods where teachers are the highest paid in the community…
That’s why many local governments will probably raise sales tax at a very high rate. Look at Alabama. State has the 2nd lowest property taxes, but has the highest sales tax rate in the nation. The city of Arabs has a sales tax of 12.5% and that includes groceries being taxed at the full rate.
Yes...because owning your home doesn't truly mean anything unless you pay property taxes every year to continue owning that home. Its simply illegal. Abolish property tax for home owners.

Not enough Gov Abbot. Now tell the counties that they can no longer keep appraising home values 10% + annually. Our state gov caused this and now they act like they have done something. I vote republican and it is time we get better leadership and do more for our tax payers.

Between Property taxes and insurance, I am loosing my home. I can't afford to up keep on the home due to $9k in these issues AND running me out of my home. Even if you pay off your home, it is NEVER completely paid off due to Property tax. So do not call me a home owner. Call me broke on low income. Abolish Property tax at 70 years old so we can up keep our homes. THANK YOU GREG ABBOTT you helped us a great deal in 2023. Biden should help seniors and vets BEFORE other countries. 2024 My Property taxes value went up $118k. I guess they are making up for last year.
Most of us will not benefit from this or it will be so small that the tax savings is minimal. People fail to see that the max homestead value you will receive is still 20% of your homes value.

Is this kicking the bucket down the road and we pay you later I will not believe it until I see my property taxes lower. Three things to survive on earth is food, water and shelter by taxes my home or taking my home behind taxes destroyed all I was taught to survive .
People over the age of 60 should not be paying property taxes. If Greg does not help homeowners more, then he needs to be replaced. Get rid of property taxes and increase our state sales tax a full % point. This would more than cover it.

You grow 10 apples 🍎, the state government takes 2, for public education… the students throw it away… schools suck and parents don’t care either.. it’s overpaid babysitters… tax payers see this and vote for less money being wasted.. the home owners get back one apple.. the Federal Leftist controlled government taxes 4 more.. you wind up with 5 apples…. All the apples that were stolen are sent to Ukraine…

when you tell them to spend that money on something else. they want to convince you that it doesn't exist because they don't want to collect it but then they offer people with houses only a tax cut. i am like what if you collected those 18 billion instead of not collecting it . then you would have 18 billion. the plan only give home owner 6million home less than 7.2 billion. while companies and government get over 10 billions. a lot of these companies already got a sweet deal on cheap labor coming to texas.

"It'll make it easier for renters to buy homes..." No it won't. Because Corporate Buyers are going to continue to buy up single family houses and rent them out at exorbitant prices...it doesn't matter that the mortgages would be lower for them...the cost of rent will still continue to climb...

Typically this means cutbacks in city and county services, and user fees for previously free services.
