    Just a note on James Brown's response to your question. he was referencing the differences between the original 5150 and the 5150 212 combo. the 112 6505 plus that you have in this video is a different design than the 212 5150 combo. the very first indicator of this is the number of preamp tubes in the circuit. the second indicator are the different size transformers with different part numbers in the 112 + vs. the 5150 212 combo. The 112+ combo in this video is a great amp, but it is not the same as the 212 combo or 5150ii circuit

  • @theelmagoo

    This is a great suggestion as I've always wondered if the 6505 was just Peavy continuing the same amp with a new name! I am curious your thoughts on a different option, the Synergy amp system. You could pick up the Syn1 and a single module new for $800 (might I recommend the SLO model in this particular case). Yes this would still need to be amplified for live work, but if you're looking for apartment recording / playing you'd be all set! Also you can add new amps to your "collection" for $400 a module, which is a pretty affordable route for getting options like a Mark II C+ / Bogner / Friedman into your hands.

Last year I helped a friend look for one, prices started hitting $600+, found one nearby that needed some repair work, got it for $180, replaced a few diodes that had fried and one of the power tube sockets, boom, he's in hog heaven. Don't sleep on the 5150 ICONIC combos hitting the used market. They are going for $500 USD already and are switchable between 40 and 10 watts. The lower power rating is perfect for bedroom volumes.

      My understanding is that tubes can be fragile and if you drop your amp, or put your amp behind the rear axel of your trailer where it vibrates and bounces the most, you can damage the tubes in your amp, thus satisfying the OP's statement about "breaking tubes".

    This was my first non-garbage amp and it served me well for YEARS. Cant recommend it enough, especially if you plan on upgrading the speaker. Its not as loud as a 120w head, but I never needed extra head room at any of the shows I played. Great recommendation, Glenn.

    • @shayneoneill1506
      @shayneoneill1506 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mindyou the difference between 60w and 120w is not a lot. Remember the relationship between watts is logarithmic, not linear. 120w is NOT twice as loud. Its about 3 decibals louder. Basically not a lot. Essentially to get a full 10DB (twice as loud) , you add a zero. So to get twice as loud as 100 watts, you need 1000 watts. And to get twice as loud as 60 watts, you need 600 watts.

    There are other great inexpensive amps out there too. I bought a Peavey Valve King 1x12 for $250USD and it ROCKS! I didn't even have to change the speaker. It's a 50watt all tube combo with 6l6 power tubes and 12ax7 pre-amp tubes. The speaker is a "proprietary" 12inch Valve King. I don't know how many watts it is, but it's 16ohm and gets the job done. To me, it sounds somewhere between a Green Back and a Vintage 30. This amp also has a "blend" knob on the back for going from class A to class A/B, or anything in between. Also the Valve King ll ( same as Valve King, but with a couple added features) and if you like a Plexi type amp/sound, the Peavey Windsor are also good and inexpensive. A friend of mine had a Windsor and it was amazing. Keep up the great work Glen. You're killin' it man.

    I have a 6505+ combo can confirm its awesome. I swapped out the speaker with a celestion v30. it makes a huge difference. i have the two notes torpedo captor as well, it works ok with it. if you do have the torpedo captor i recommend using the attenuator on it as that combo is really loud. its too loud for a bedroom just past 1 on the amp. I mean you could get yourself a 1x12 evh combo for well over a grand or get a 6505+ combo for buttons. They are only about £600ish from new so still not bad for a new full valve beast.

    I was fortunate enough to take a chance on this used modded Soldano brand amp i saw in a Guitar Center for $800 back in 2000, to be more specific a Soldano Hotrod 50+ with a Bruce Egnater dual channel switch mod plus a few other tone tweaks (he is local to me and used to do amp repair/mods out of a local guitar shop), and also came with the matching Soldano 2x12 cab loaded with V30 speakers...still can't believe i got this amp/cab for that price...I've read the Soldano HR50/SLO100 inspired the 5150 design. The SLO has more of that distinct high mid presence grind that just cuts through a full mix like a knife without much effort...even better is that these SLO's have a tube preamp direct out which you can pipe into an interface and use IRs along with your mic'd signal. This amp sat in Guitar Center for a while because people had no idea of the name/history at the time and just thought it was a cheap Marshall or Mesa clone. Ultimate score, as those heads alone these days sell for $2,500 easily. I thought about selling it many times, but in the end realized i am owning a piece of important guitar amp history, that needs no other pedals to make it sound good. James Brown is a wizard as well, anyone interested in pedals needs to try some of his older Amptweaker pedal line if you can find them still...I have the Amptweaker Tight fuzz which can get all matter of any fuzz face/tonebender/muff tones as well as germanium/silicon boosts and act as a sort of treble booster/Rangemaster when you turn the fuzz knob to 0 and turn the Tight control knob way up.

    I have a bugera 6262 that is supposed to be an exact copy of a 6505 Plus. But the problem I have with it is that the lead channel is too loud on 1 and sounds like fart on 0. Fx loop doesn't help. Attenuator helps but shouldn't need it for a volume control issue.
    Plus the issue they all have is that the crunch is much louder than the clean.
    So I think the e v h 5150 III may be the king of them all.

    You should do a video on what I affectionately call that "Integrated Stack Mod" where you take any old combo amp, take the back off, then wire an output jack where the amp's output is, and a jack to the speaker (probably not so helpful in your case) so that you can use the output of the amp just like any other head, but also maintain the combo amp functionality you just have to have a cable to connect the top and bottom half of the amp.
