I don’t know I find that the users slowly create the daw with exchanges like this, give it time, I’ve been playing around with the Harrison offering lately but protools (certified since 8), studio one and ableton for me
$300 is harsh but their uad2 plugs are generally quite high across the board

I have been using digital performer for 25 years, although Luna is lacking in nearly all of the features that I have been used to over the years, sonically it is light years above logic, digital performer and similar DAW’s! It has far greater warmth and dramatically better stereo imaging!
I will be programming and digital performer, then transferring the session over to Luna where I were also cut the vocals!

Not sure when this was recorded, but you also can’t use any of the Luna instruments that you buy with Luna in any other DAW except for Luna. You can’t use the Neve Summing, API Summing. That’s very disappointing to me. Also you can’t separate your drum tracks with a virtual instrument. like you can with Cubase or Nuendo or Logic or Protools.

I love both Studio One and Luna. I think Luna will get much better over time. I love how elegant it is, even though there are big features missing. I find it to be extraordinarily musical, and least from a creative/songwriting sense. I don't feel like I have to fight it as much to get it to do what I want to do; However, I am more of a musician than an engineer.
I think if you are a pro that requires certain features (such as templates), then I don't think it is ready for pro work. But for a hobbyist that found Console confusing, its a really clean solution. It will get better. UA is a great company full over very smart people. Both PreSonus and UA are great conscientious companies that care about what they do.

I guess I will try to run it with out the Usb Ilok tomorrow to see if it works, because I never Unplug the Ilok from my computer I don't know I was just thinking bout it right now the other thing maybe the info is there but I just have not look in to it , dose Luna run from your UAD interface ? or from the computer , cause maybe that is why you can't use it with out the interface maybe ?

Hey I am one of your students in your courses, been a recording artist for some time but want to mix my own music now. What I don't like about Luna, or maybe I just haven't found it yet, is that I don't see my unused clips. Now I am in trouble with space. In the Library I can see the audio files but there's no way of knowing what is what if you are doing many takes of vocals for example and you want to clean up the disk space. In Pro Tools for example you can see the clips on a sidebar and when you consolidate the clips you want to keep and rename them you can highlight them and delete the ones you don't use. I record in Luna on a MacBook Pro laptop with limited space and then I want to export my takes to Pro Tools for mixing on my PC which is a beast. Obviously what I dislike the most is that it isn't PC compatible!

  • @TheLithGH
    @TheLithGH ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks for posting! I do think it's odd that once you record and burn in your track, you still need to power on your Interface to mix. So if you want to remix 5 years later, and you've moved on to another interface brand, you're screwed... you can't remix or remaster.
What I find odd, is that in Studion One, the UAD plugins sound like garbage, but the SAME UAD plugins and settings played within UAD Console, sound amazing! Other than internal processing, not sure why the same amp sim sounds like mud in S1, but clear in Console... would appreciate your thoughts on that (which is the only reason I thought to switch to Luna, if S1 sounds worse)... even the vernerable Neural DSP sims don't sound very good in my S1... strange
    Thanks!

Dave, excellent Video review as usual! You are on point with all your comments, the Neve at $300 is insulting to us customers who spend thousands of dollars on our interfaces and satellites. Shame on UA. $100 is fair. For templates, I built a mix, then used the save copy as feature to create a template. Works very well but agree it should have a template feature built in. The big miss here as well as no controller support is the track comping, or lack thereof. logic has an amazing comping feature that UA should have incorporated. Also there’s no bounce in place feature which is sad.

Yea, I must say that back in the day U/A was really one of the only comapines that did good plugin emulations of old analog hardware and therefore the fact that they have the most expensive plugins in the business was justified. Today, there are so many other comapines that make wonderful plugin emulations and their plugins are a fraction of the price. It is becoming harder and harder for me to recommend U/A to people who are getting into these sort of plugins. Comapines like Slate, Plugin Alliance, Waves just to name a few do a really good job and now their plugins are much less CPU intensive as well so the DSP chips are not as much a factor as in the past. As you know, I do a TON of plugin in demo / reviews and if I were starting over I would not go the U/A route. I would get the Slate Digital All access pass, a bunch of channel strips from Waves and Plugin Alliance and a few other selections and call it a day.

Home Recording Made Easy ya I have an 8 quad, a twin duo, 2 quad satellites and an octo so I’ve spent a ton of money on UA gear not to mention a majority of their plugins. Heavily invested. I've been "playing" with Luna for about a week now and you are correct, there are some lacking features that are beneficial to my workflow. One correction though to #5 "No Surface Support". From what I've read, you're correct the PreSonus FaderPort will not work with Luna but the Softube Console 1 does work. I have the Console 1 and because there is a Console1 On-screen-display software that runs in the iOS background, you can use the Console 1 plugin on the tracks and it works well but when I get a FaderPort... oh well...I will stick with ST1. The iLok authentication, from one of the "Luna Office Hours" TH-cam episodes, they talked briefly about the iLok and they have received a lot of flack because of it although you do not need a USB iLok - it's a "cloud" iLok account so it will travel without needing the USB iLok dongle. The MIDI to Audio bounce is a huge miss! I use Superior Drummer a lot and I like to bounce the MIDI drum tracks to an audio file. Another big gripe I have is there no easy way to setup and route the busses to a stereo track - referred to as a "Print" track - there are instructions, I have followed them to the letter... I have yet to get this to work. Also "mastering" using the "Mixdown" is not good. As you said, the fact that MP3 is not an option, is a miss. I'm just hoping UA will take all the feedback and add these features to Luna - if they do, I believe this could be a DAW to be reckoned with. YES, the Neve Summing should be included!! The Studer A800 tape is a $150 plugin - it's included, I have no idea why on earth they wouldn't include the Neve plugin. Agree, this is not ready for Primetime yet, IMO, UA should have released this a "beta" first - received feedback - then released a GA.

I'm wanting them to allow your existing purchased UAD channel strips to be used as extensions (like the Vision channel strip that I don't own). I think this would be a great option for those who have already purchased channel strips from UAD. It's just crazy to spend a bunch on the Vision channel strip extension when you already bought other channel strips from them like the SSL, etc.

I love how Luna emulates a console in design. But I need I/O inserts for my workflow. I use UA hardware, but can't use it as inserts in Luna. Good point on the no included utility type plugins. UA should think about maybe including some or all of the Precison plugins they have. So new users will have more utility style plugins instead of all analog emulation type plugins. Every other DAW I have used contains a basic set of utility plugins. I do think the Precision channel strip might some with the entry level bundle. Cant remember though.

I am an Ableton user for a long time and used Logic for Mixing. Had pro-tools but was not really into it. I don't see how this is a failure on UA's part at all. I am surprised to find many seen it as a failure at a product on early inception. And yes, have some UA plugins but you will be surprised that I hardly used them as opposed to others like FabFilter and Valhalla. I don't see UA failed at all for introducing a FREE product. Still using Ableton but I don't knocking on any other doors just because they have different colors.

I do agree with the $300 Neve, I bought it on sale and I had a $25 coupon so I think I ended up paying like oh maybe 130 bucks for it and I think it was worth that but would have been better if it was included. The other things I can wait I’m sure they’ll have that down the road. Thanks for doing this video it’s very informative I am very very very new to Luna!

I'm also a big Universal Audio fan. I own UA hardware and quite a few of their plugins. I too am disappointed with Luna. With all the Namm hype and months of teasers to the release I was expecting that everything they were showing in the demos were part of it. I had several issues installing it and didn't like being chained to an ilok and the hardware. Then I find out that the only plugins included are two that I've already purchased and the summing came with a $300 price tag. I haven't used it since installation and don't plan to until they get things in place to make it at least a good alternative to the other great DAWS out there.

The Mac users are having a ball, I started with pro tools and switched to Studio one because of the speed in work flow and the drag in drop is like ice cream with cake, UAD strength is as you say their plug ins and the interfaces, they could of balanced with both formats than hype this DAW up and slap you in the face with a Beta with bugs and just finish it or complete it for use, also UAD is copying Presonus subscription model , Now UAD is up against the wall to produce and back up what this DAW can do, It's becoming Tuna instead of LUNA , Looks like a Harrison Clone ?

andesneko I think this is just the new thing that companies do, I had to do the same thing for my MPC X, Advance 51 keyboard, Air plugins, and Sonivox plugins but you don’t actually need a physical ilok but you can use the software ilok instead. The hardware for Luna is the one thing that sets it apart from other daws, it effectively gives you a HDX system for a much lower price and it ensures all Luna users operate with a certain level of audio fidelity across the board to all users. I think the value comes into play when you mix your songs, you can actually hear a difference. And I’m not even talking about the Neve summing.

I just made a rant video on how Neve products are overpriced, SSL Products are over priced. Burl audio interface Products are way overpriced. UAD is no different. Their gear is ridiculously overpriced. People are achieving great results using studio one, Presonus audio interfaces like the studio 192 and DP88. and third party plugins from companies like IK Multimedia, Plugin alliance, Isotope, Waves, and lots others. UAD are not selling as many UA 1176s or LA2A because so many plugin companies like waves, T Racks, and Slate are doing an amazing job as well as great sounding clones like Stam audio, Warm Audio and even Klark Teknik. So UAD is trying to expand their market to make money and they making the same mistakes as cakewalk and logic where their DAWs that only support half of the market and they will always lose out. These companies need to quit being greedy because of their name and realize the average home studio owner has average median income of about 30,000 a year an cannot afford 3000 dollar interfaces or 300 dollar plug ins each and so forth. This is why plugin alliance, slate, waves, and definitetly T racks is killing the market. This holds true for DAWs such as Harrison Mixbus, Cakewalk, Reaper, because they are free or reasonably priced.

In general, there are very few reasons to switch DAW. Relearning such a complex piece of software is a complete waste of time given that most DAWs today share more or less the same feature-set.
However, LUNA + Apollo is in my opinion by far the best package out there in terms of value for the serious beginner. The quality of the interfaces, the free plugins and instruments included with LUNA is just phenomenal and cover a lot of ground.
I agree that the iLok requirement is weird and a little bit annoying, especially considering the fact that the Apollo is required anyway. At least it doesn't require the dongle...
While I agree that the Neve summer is expensive, I don't understand the statement "if I'm not going to use the Neve summer, why would I use LUNA?" How can an optional plugin make LUNA useless? You don't have to use the Neve summer, use Oxide, or a third party plugin, or don't use a summer/tape emulator... Where is the problem?
LUNA is indeed behind all the popular DAWs, maybe that's why UA insist on the term "Recording System". But it is only a v1 software, it develops very fast and it's free. So make your calculations :)
As I said, switching DAW is rarely a smart move regardless.

Okay I made this fire beat in Luna but I'm Disappointed in the lack of plugin options, and then I'm not able to convert my midi to audio, nor can I pan my instruments in the mixer. the way luna looks is cool and is simple enough to learn quickly but its like having the slots to make cool music but can't actually give your sounds what they need on the engineering side of things. Like How do I Add My Own Samples and Drum Kits? Idk if they added the save templates yet but if not, I wont be using this daw. Its cool but Studio One can do all of this and more

Well, you need an Apollo in order to use Luna so its not "free" so to speak,

  • @TheBissco
    @TheBissco 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You nailed it. Not to pile on, but when you pay $2K or higher for one of their Apollo interfaces and you get a small set of their most basic plugins, it's really annoying and petty of them not to throw in even one higher end plugin - or why not let us choose plugins instead of getting the same ones for each Apollo device? I have the Twin, the x6, and a Satellite, and each time I get the same dozen entry level plugins with no option to swap for something different.
The people who put in the work to create the products deserve a payday, but these premium prices are way out of line by modern standards. You really can't get ANY decent plugin for under $300 unless it's on sale - which is rare.
BTW, I've been using Harrison Mixbus32c for STEM mixing tracks recorded in Logic, and that DAW (not great for recording) REALLY puts a good final glue and tone on a mix - all built-in to the DAW! UA even sells the Harrison EQ plugin for $300 while the entire DAW with that EQ on EVERY channel retails for $349. /rant

Why are so many angry about the Neve summing price ? i imagine it cost them heaps to develop it and they price it to make a decent return. its not ours by any god given right and if we dont want it just use something else that suits us, Running a successful company with many employees requires a profit folks.
    Cheers

Everyone has an opinion and they are all valid. U/A in general has the most expensive plugins on the planet and trust me....I am a huge U/A fand. if you have been following me for any length of time you would know that. However, I need to call it as I see it. There are several other companny's that now make plugins that are just as good as the U/A stuff and they are literally a fraction of the cost. This is one of the reasons I find myself using the U/A stuff less and less these days. So, is $300 too much for the Neve summing plugin? YES it is with out a doubt. They now have the API summing plugin for the same $300 and I still thank that is double what it should be. Just my opinion.

I've been using UA since 2015 and I'm beginning to see a trend when UA releases new hardware/software. I still don't like the Console app that you have to use between your interface and your DAW to use UAD plug-ins while recording. UA seems to develop stuff for a specific situation which limits the functionality of their products. I was in the market for a reactive load box/IR manager solution when the OX Box came out. I compared the OX Box to the BOSS Waza Tube Amp Expander and the BOSS unit had more functionality that I wanted. Even though the OX Box had built-in plug-ins that were excellent, it was limited in other ways that I didn't like. Seems like Luna is the same situation. First, No PC version! Really! Then the log-in/I-Lok/hardware authentication hurdles! Then missing functions that all real DAWs have and users are used to getting without question. To me, Luna looks like the Console app with another layer added. I haven't used it (PC user), but that's my impression. It seems that Luna is designed for a static studio situation where the user has their UA system and never does anything away from there. UA has fixed some of the problems with OX Box and I'm sure that they are working on making Luna better, but they should have waited to release it until 1) the PC version was ready, and 2) they had let some users try it and got their feedback so they could fix problems and add needed features. Sometimes it seems that companies are just so in a hurry to make money on new products that they release products that aren't really ready. I really like UA hardware and software, but it seems that their Product Managers aren't focusing on what the real world user wants.
