20:59 giving a little bit of reverb to bring all the instruments in the same room was super helpful. Helped a lot on my actual recording. Thank you so much Pete !
I've been using LUNA since March on and off. It has a ways to go but the sound quality with the tape saturation and summing is stellar. Thanks for breaking down your recording process -- a lot of great info/tips I'm going to leverage. I think you sold me on Superior Drummer.
I found you last night while wandering the void. Glad I did. This vid gave me all kinds of helpfor a tune I"m working on. I don't have the gear you have, obviously (I'm using Studio One basic set up, no UA), but your tips are gold. Your drum taming and bass control through compression was just what I was looking for. That clean chorus tone is sick as well. Thank you for the help and much respect from the Bay Area. MK
Luna is sic I’ve been using it since it’s release the sound quality is unreal do we need another daw hmmmm ? NEVE SUMMING IS ALL I WILL SAY .Luna is heads and shoulders above the rest as far as sound production, the quirks have to still be worked out ,but plugins and layout and ability to sound organic and full is unmatched. Your killing it Pete !
Man, Pete, the opening strains of this tune totally put me in mind of latter days XTC, the instrumentation, and everything. I love it! But, then, I love pretty much every demo tune you do. Thank you!
Hi Pete, have been following you for ages and this vid has been perfect as I’m setting up my home studio at the moment. Thank you for your awesome content and exceptional tunes you create. Rock on man.
@@bipolatelly9806 we're hoping its a "not for PC... yet". I imagine they are using the MacOS version to work out a lot of bug in the software before throwing Windows into the mix (haha... get it?)
Thanks for the great demo! I love LUNA, use it from scratch, electric and bassguitar though, i record through my Kemper via the UAD 4-710d. Acoustic guitars through the Zoom AC 3 and the 4-710d and the Neumann KM 184. I never could get a real good guitar sound through the guitar sim plug-ins from UAD unfortunately...Your guitar sound is awesome though...
For me, the Studer Tape emulator made the mix sound less cluttered. Despite being softer sounding, each instrument became more defined. That was mind blowing! The Ocean Wave was a great effect too.
the N4 AX 102 Tape with Cupwise will blow UAD and IK media away....LOL....its incredible, you need to get N4 with Acustica Audio..opens up a whole new world...or mixing and mastering
love your videos and your playing, @petethorn always so great, informative, musical...just perfect. looks like you have an imac there. very curious what imac you are using with your ua interfaces and with luna.
WOW Pete... You are an artisan when it comes to Tone and the "real" 80's-90's guitar voicing and spectral imaging. So wonderful this video, where you go in depth with LUNA, but mainly your approach to plugins and mixing/mastering is fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas, knowledge and thoughts on what all us guitarists and 'nerds' use half a lifetime trying to get right!
Cool video! I had not heard about LUNA before. Gotta check it out now. “I think was going for an 80’s sound meets 1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins.” YES! 👏
I can see how much effort is in those videos involved. It's obviuos that you recorded them in day/night settings, and that little keyboard is there or not every second frame. Beside you're great musician/composer/player, you also tend to improve on those videos you giving us every week, and I am realy grateful for that. Thank you Pete Thorn, now go and do another one! :)
It'll be interesting to watch how this develops - UA are being very clever by giving away a full DAW if you buy one of their interfaces, but does the user want to be locked in to the UA platform? It's a shame there's no Windows version, otherwise it would tempt me enough to go with UA when I next upgrade my interface just to experience Luna. I question whether the market needs, or will support, another DAW, as the ProTools/Logic/Cubase thing is so widespread, and "knowing" your DAW means speed of operation, which is valuable to a professional user. Great demo as always!
I always wondered how you get such fantastic drum grooves (noted, I knew they were digital), but the fact that you click them yourself kinda blew my mind. I can't even fathom how to do that. I'm stumped on making drum tracks for my guitar stuff. Really pleased to see something like this. A little inside view of how you do your demo songs. They are genius.
The toontrack software makes it really simple to tap in a general idea of the feel you want and then it scans it's library for patterns similar to what you've played. You can grab any of those you want, edit them, mix and match. It's pretty easy unless your pattern idea is just a unique beast, which happens sometimes when you're trying to duplicate certain real drummer recordings.
Wow - thanks Pete! I've been using Logic Pro X for the last few years and while I still have a ton to learn I can now have some fun making a decent sounding project. I'll be checking LUNA out.
This is a shot in the dark but you mentioned your DAW of choice has been logic for years... you wouldn’t happen to have lessons or instructional videos on logic would you? I write music and I use logic but can’t seem to get that “pop” in sound I’m looking for. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you and you rock!
Great stuff, Pete. Couldn’t help but note your Mother Love Bone shirt in your cover with Toni. Great nod to Andy Wood and Chris. You’re the best brother.
Hey, don't know squat about all this stuff bud but interesting video thanks. while listening to your music I was hearing a wee bit Tim Peirce going on. respects to you Pete. stay healthy
Pete really enjoyed this video. I appreciate how you shared your recording workflow with the LUNA DAW. It looks like a very nice graphic interface especially for guitarists. One of my biggest struggles as a singer/player is developing a DAW workflow that simplifies getting to that creative point. That point where you spend less time navigating software but instead just play and create.
Wow! That was most insightful...Q: you don't use any 12 - 16 ms delay between your double tracks (because of evtl. phasing issues)? Anyway! Great demo, Pete. Kudos & thanks 👏
Thanks Pete! Looks and sounds like a legitimate DAW. I will check them out. I have several plug-ins that I can already tell will work beautifully. The song is effing awesome! Your bass track is in the pocket, hell, you made that midi drum track groove brother! Cheers. o/
Really like the tune! Man Pete is such a good writer ! Love the feel for tone he has ... Taking us through the process of recording is super interesting. Now do the same just with stock plug ins on logic ;) my guess: would be different but still very good just because of the playing ...anyway, looking forward to my apollo arriving today ;)
This is the best Luna demo. Beatiful composition and I love that half time switch. There’s one question I try to find. Can you record in A.R.M. Mode and use 3th party VST’s/AU at the same time ? I guess not ? Nobody’s talking ‘bout that.
Fantastic. I've wanted to see an overview of your demo recording process since I first discovered your channel. You answered many questions I had about the way you work on these pieces, as well as just giving a great tutorial in DAW workflow in general. I use Cubase and a different set of plugins, but every technique you showed here is applicable there. Another big thanks from me in Austin TX to you in LA, CA for your terrifically useful and info packed content.
OK OK OK ...always have enjoyed the info you've shared. But you have even impressed me more with being hip to Fortelaza. Tequila. You know...if you take the label off - the bottle is etched with it's Mexican version name. Great stuff. Hard to get...still! LOL
sweet thanks Pete I was asking if you could do a lesson like this the other day ! So when Arranging Do you start off with the drum Structure? I'm learning how to Organize My ideas and and trying not to get overwhelmed Writers Block.
In case you don't get a response…he was on a UA video yesterday and said he started out with finding the beginning guitar sound through the Boss pedal and figured out what musical idea he wanted to develop, played a bit of that into the box, and then figured out what sort of beat would work. Once the drums were fleshed out a bit he re-recorded the main idea and filled in the parts. Obviously he wanted to show a different side to the pedal midway through, so he restarted the process with a different drum and bass sound. For a demo it works really well!
You can put Neves' and any Tape machine you want on and or all Logic tracks, including the Master Bus (I prefer the J37). Luna appears to be marked primarily towards guitarists. I am not impressed with it's total workflow so far. I would/will Stay with Logic over Pro Tools or Ableton....
After using for Logic for many years (along with assorted third-party plug-ins and virtual instruments), it would be a big deal to switch to a different recording app/DAW. I own an Apollo Twin, so could download LUNA for free. So, the question becomes ..... after using LUNA for awhile, are you migrating to LUNA, or do you find yourself going back to Logic? What is your choice?
Love, love, love the solo on your vintage Stratocaster, Pete - it fits the song so well and has great dynamics. I'm always so impressed how you are able to stay so creative and inventive. Also, what do think about the Status headphones? I've had mine now for three years and I love them.
It definitely sounds great, but I think I would be a bit overwhelmed by all the plug-ins. I'm still hung up on the old method of recording which is to get the guitars sounding right going in, and capture it with the best possible gear you can to get the best quality recording. I'm having difficulty letting go of that train of thought. However, the finalizing and Mastering does have a lot of appeal.
I was just wondering if you are using the S/PDIF to come out of the Ox Box? I just got one and am trying to decide how best to connect it to my interface.

I still can't get away from an LA-3A on bass. Not for how it sounds to me. There is something is the low mids that is always just pleasing.

Great video. Pete, do you think a more basic UA Apollo Duo could handle all of that processing power with all those plugins and channel strips on at the same time? I feel like I would max out my resources immediately and honestly that’s keeping me from trying Luna a bit more extensively. Your recording sounds awesome by the way.
Pete, did you watch skate videos as a kid like the old powell and peralta stuff? This song reminded me of some of those. Loved it! I also use UA interfaces. I recently tried a Lynx Hilo and I'm going back to UA, it just makes more sense and sounds just as good. My only issue with Luna is the lack of hardware insert but I've heard that it'll will eventually be a feature. I have a feeling that I'll probably move from Logic to Luna once they do.

Mark Pritchard some of the things he is using here though are paid addons for Luna. The Neve summing is an additional cost. There are a few people that have been complaining about the price of it at 300$ but they don’t seem to put into perspective that it can be used on however many tracks you are running, the alternative is a real Neve console for $50K+, so to have it on as many tracks as you want, or your system will handle, really isn’t that bad. The only thing I’ve found so far that I will have to adjust to is that it is NOT compatible with VST, AU only. For me it isn’t a huge problem because I am currently switching my studio to Mac with the original intent of giving Logic an honest try but I think I’ll be happy to go the Luna path considering the integration with my UAD hardware
