One thing I rarely see mentioned about this film and it's popularity is with the marketing and timing. This film was released at the end of 1984. I was just a young kid but I still remember the anticipation of the real Halley's comet on the way to arrive in 1986. Talk of the real comet was in our science class and on television. So in 1985 Night of the Comet was big. Me and my brother watched it so many times. Then we got to see Halley's comet too, and thankfully we did not turn to dust.
Brilliant film, witty dialogue, great soundtrack. And if you want two sassy, tough and wonderful heroines, there isn't many better than Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney. Would love to have seen a sequel to this.
The writing was particularly good in this film. One of my favorite parts was when Kelli Maroney's character is recalling how one of her friends was flunking algebra and trying to keep her parents from finding out. "Night of the Comet" is one of my favorite films. It's a delightfully tongue-in-cheek take on the end-of-the-world scenario in which a global cataclysm kills most of the population except for a few scattered survivors and the usual zombie-like mutants. It's just a really fun movie. I thought Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney, as the two Valley Girl sisters, were absolutely adorable.
Geoffrey Lewis, RIP, was a fine actor. Many may well remember him from the original SALEM'S LOT as Mike Ryerson. Lot other genre credits lilke Moon of the Wolf (1972), etc.
I saw this movie at the theatre when it was released and have watched it since at least a dozen times. It's one of my all time favorites and is a fun, entertaining and memorable film. It is quintessential 80's but instead of detracting from its appeal it only heightens it. The two female leads were also great in it. Katherine Mary Stewart was fairly well known in the 80's but both actors should have had much bigger careers than they did. I love that this movie is finally available again. If you haven't seen it you should, it's a great popcorn movie.
Watched it on repeat on HBO back in the day. I probably taped it. Also watched the heck out of The Last Starfighter! I was a big KMS fan as a kid, I guess....
I am so happy to see this movie getting some love. I have memorized this movie due to the number of times I have watched it. Catherine Mary Stewart was my #1 crush throughout my teen years, largely due to this movie.
I’ve been looking for this movie for almost 20 years. I saw it as a kid and only remembered the part where people turned dust and ending. It’s driven me crazy trying to find it! Thank you!
I remember renting this movie on VHS and loving it. Just goes to show you that you don't need a big budget to make a great movie. It's all about the story, cast and a good director. Hollywood sure has changed since then. The 80's where a good time in America.
In high school, we LOVED this movie! As a sci=fi/horror movie geek, this was such a funny movie for the 80's. We went to see it many times. It also goes good with original fright night! Its got all the materialism garbage (ie the mall) except with zombies and guns! Thanks so much for taking me back (wish I was still there).
Incidentally.. Catherine Mary Stewart was every schoolboy's dream in the early 1980's, not only for her looks, but also since "Reg" could have likely beat you at the arcade game Tempest. Both factors that probably help the movie stick into our brains, even as grown men 35+ years later. As for the movie itself, I think it was simply brilliant for it's time, especially the feeling of post-apocalyptic desolation it gave you. Everyone liked to explore an empty mall on a Tuesday too. ;) However, I always thought there could have been a bit more radiation mutants or zombies in the movie. The dudes at the mall were kinda just like mutant jokers with sunglasses on, which was a little dumb. Other than that, I'd still give everything else an 8/10.. well done.
1984 to me is like the best year ever of my 49 years on this planet. I was 10 years old and it was like an amazing time to be alive. I absolutely love the '80s. And this movie was my favorite at the time right along with nightmare on elm Street the last Starfighter and other great fantastic movies two numerous to name. The '80s as a decade alone stand above and beyond any other time frame in the last hundred years if you ask me there's just something extremely special about the '80s. Nostalgia did not have to happen to me over this movie because I was already madly in love with it when it came out. Same for purple rain la Bamba dirty dancing yeah you get the picture. Don't forget the Lost boys karate kid fast times at ridgemont high there was just so many fantastic amazing movies in the '80s and 1984 was the top
You are about a year older than I am, so I remember what you are talking about as well as the age context. It's funny, growing up in the 80's, we had no idea how amazing this particular time period was, because it is all we knew. We didn't know how awesome it was until things started to go to shit in the early 90s or maybe later for some. I was 5 in 1980, I was 14 in 1989, these years I remember well and with much fondness. Every year had amazing movies and music, tv seasons were long (22ep) and it was of a far higher quality, morals were still taught, and kids were still disciplined at school and at home. I could go outside to play at 7:30am and come home, when I heard my mother yelling my name (that sound traveled like a fucking mile) for dinner. Summers were amazing. My God, if I die and can do it all again, that would be just fine by me.
I'm happy to learn I'm not the only person around who still loves this movie. If allowed only 10 movies for the rest of my life, this would likely be one of them.
Never done that or even thought of that triple bill. Now you've suggested it, the seed is planted. Next time I go to see my mate who loves horror and 80's stuff but isn't as well versed as i am in the films, this triple bill will be on the menu. Thank you kind sir.
Revisited this a couple of years back and enjoyed it much more than when I was younger. Catherine Mary Stewart & Kelli Maroney make this film. I could happily watch them all day (both beautiful, even now). Without them, Night of the Comet would not have the charm it has that elevates it slightly from all the other 80's movies that were similar. Showed this film to a mate and he fell in love with it.......or maybe fell in love with Catherine Mary Stewart. Don't blame him.
@@mikesilva3868 Good shout. Her film resume outshines both Catherine & Kelli's combined. I remember her from TerrorVision. That film, as bonkers as it is, always stuck with me.
Catherine Mary Stewart picked some pretty interesting projects to work on, back in the 80s! This, The Last Starfighter, Weekend at Bernies and The Apple all come to mind. All pretty off the wall concepts - but each fun, in their own way.
Classic 80s. I rent it from my local video store and watch it every October. Not a joke, my city still has a video rental store. They survived by having a big selection including niche/cult and import movies.
@@MikeG82 It definitely is. Only 2 guys work there and they’re cinema encyclopedias. They opened in 1998 and have strong local support. They have new releases like any store back in the day but their main thing is cult classics, import and niche that would be difficult to find streaming.
I used to sleep with my tv on. Sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night and find some obscure movie playing. This was one of those movies. I stayed up late watching it. I never saw it air again and it was difficult to find.
I saw this in the theater when it was released and I loved it. It had Catherine Mary Stewart in it and she was in my second favorite Sci Fi movie, The Last Starfighter. Who could resist?
One of my top 10 horror comedy selections. The department store scene is probably one of my favorites, from the energy that they exude, to the music that's in the background, to the way they handle themselves. I've always liked things that are a little offbeat and it's a great storyline.
My family did not have the VHS tape, so I had to wait for it on the TV in 1990-1995. It was one of those movies which I would see 35 minutes after its start time, so I just watched the remaining movie until one day I learned it was playing at a certain time. When I finally saw the beginning, I felt complete. As of this day, this movie is being remade which I hope sees a theatrical release. What a classic !!!
This film is so underrated! I remember me and my brother walking to video spectrum and going through the bins looking for scary movies. We came across this gem and I’ll still rewatch it to this day. Definitely give it a try.
I LOVED this movie, I was 19 when it came out! Watched it a drive-in double feature, then it was on cable all the time and I never tired from watching it.
Saw this as a kid on tv and it stuck with me; I think it's because of it's got an intimate feel to it rather being a blockbuster, you're connected to characters who are relatable.
I used to LOVE this movie!! I watched it every chance I got when I was little. But, I can't lie, I had pretty much completely forgotten about it. Until this video. Now, I want to see again.
During the pandemic and getting tired of the streaming services i got deep into 80s movies and discovered the strong community celebrating VHS and 80s culture. A lot of movies which got on the index in my country(Germany) finally got pulled of that index in recent years with new ratings(more reasonable ones) and i discovered so many more movies including Night of the Comet. This movie is truly a gem. Its bad-ass, entertaining and feministic without being "woke" or lecturing, just natural cool girls with fears, worries and balls of steel.
This movie started my life long fascination with the post-apocalyptic world. As a kid, I didn't think about the fact they wouldn't have electricity for their houses or gasoline to run all the cool cars.
Lesson: When making a budget film the creativity and expertise must extend well past the writers, cast and director, to every member of the crew, including post production. You need exceptionally talented people to pull it off, and Night of The Comet is a prime example. It was never intended to be an epic film, but it's a damn good one, and I wish there were more like them.
OMG! This is such a good movie. I remember watching this like crazy. The film was a great idea and a doable plot line. Everyone in the 80’s were terrified of what would happen when Hailey’s Comet was going to make its pass of the earth. Then of course, the future was scary as well. The film captured everything that was feared in the 80’s.
Such a badass movie! the people turning to sand was one of the most haunting feelings. that scared me more than anything as a kid, the idea that at any time a flash of light could end it all...
I have always loved this film ever since I saw it shortly after it first came out. I have watched it more times over the years than I can begin to remember. I actually rewatched it a few weeks ago when I rediscovered it on Tubi; it totally stands the test of time. I was thrilled to see this channel’s glowing review, which reaffirmed my memories of this wonderful classic (in my opinion). I would definitely recommend this film to viewers, young and old, looking for a totally enjoyable film experience. And YES!, the music is awesome.
The cinematographer did a lot with a little. Those long, lingering shots of the city, like alleyways & dumpsters. Empty streets. The way it would linger on the red skyline for just a bit too long after the characters drove out of the scene. Very well done!
Tarantino said on Rogan that the 2 worst decades in film were the 50s and the 80s. I totally disagree with the latter. Low budget gems like this are why I love that era
Have you done "Chopper Chicks in Zombietown" yet? Because that's another badass movie that i'd love to see. I have never seen anyone give this movie any love, so it'd be really cool to take it in
I have loved this movie since I saw it as a kid on VHS in 1986. I even dragged my boyfriend to a screening at the Northwestern University film school. It will always have a place in my heart.
One of my favorite movies!! I remember going to see it in the theater when it came out. It was and always will be FANTASTIC! Thank s for the walk down memory lane and all the facts I didn't know about it.
I just saw this for the first time on tubi the other day. I thought it was going to be shit writing and acting and shit filming due to budget, but then I was tricked into thinking it was actually a bigger budget film. I really enjoyed it. A legit 7/10
Read the thumb nail and immediately watched this (for the first time), and man did it have a crap ton packed in it's 1hr and 30 min run time! Very surprised !!
I watched this last year and thought it was great (I may have seen it as a kid, but can't remember). I love these end of the world, minimal humans left, sci-fi premises.
Loved this movie!! Thank God for Cinemax playing this on repeat. DID YOU JUST SAY ZERO BOYS???!! I don't know anyone else that's ever seen that movie!!
I'm surprised that you didn't mention the rumor that the younger-sister character in the movie supposedly inspired the look and personality of Buffy the Vampire-Slayer. =)
Saw this in theaters back in 84. Loved the concept and thought it was a well done movie even if I was only 8. I liked the characters I should like and feared the ones I should fear.
This has been on Pluto lately, and I have to admit that when rewatching I am shocked by the obvious low-budget, something more due to modern sensibilities than the film itself. What I do recall is the summer it was on Cinemax(summer of '85, every other movie on 'max was purple rain, lol. It was like "Commando...Purple Rain....Death Trap...Purple Rain...this movie...Purple Rain") where I saw it dozens of times (remember when you just watched what was on?) Good movie, as well; if you can look past the minimalism, it's a fun and unique post-apocalypse story. Well done, Joe
I saw this on cable back in 1985. It was cool and scary at the same time. Actually, Sharon punched Kelli in the face. The mall employees that kidnap the sisters were creepy. The two little kids were annoying.
Not just a cult classic 80’s flick, but arguably 1 of the best B movies of all time.

Saw this as a kid on tv and it stuck with me; I think it's because of it's got an intimate feel to it rather being a blockbuster, you're connected to characters who are relatable.
Easily one of my all-time favorite movies! I love anything 80s and this one ticks all the boxes!!!
Love this movie, I was 21 when it came out. I still re-watch it from time to time.
Just rewatched this movie a couple of weeks ago!
I do miss the 80's. sigh**
Searched for the soundtrack on Spotify and found it! Neat!
This movie started my life long fascination with the post-apocalyptic world. As a kid, I didn't think about the fact they wouldn't have electricity for their houses or gasoline to run all the cool cars.
I remember seeing this on tv in the late 90s, took me many years to track it down and watch again. "there goes the neighborhood"
One of my all time favorite 80's zombie flicks....terribly underrated.
This is still one of my all time favorites of the 80's PERIOD!!! 💜💯
Love this film!!! Everyone involved did so much with so little! Obviously not a serious film but at the time it was perfect.
Loved this movie, loved Kelly and Catherine, loved the plot, one of my fav 80's films growing up.
1984 is one of the greatest years when it came to movies & music.
This is Hands-down one of my favorite 80’s films!! I’m glad to see you give it respect! I have the DVD
This movie has now replaced my previous favorite Christmas movie - Die Hard
Never heard of this movie, will watch it ASAP.
I wish that this movie was more well known, it's a cult classic Sci Fi flick, and some of the special effects still hold up well.
Buying for my Christmas Movie collection. I too remember watching on HBO.
Still one of my all time favorites. Thanks for finally getting to it! ❤️
I watch this movie every time it's on which is pretty frequently. Love it ❤
I loved this movie! Haven't seen any references to it until this video. Thank you!!
Good job on the video, subscribed! 👍
My personal Christmas double feature is Night of the Comet and Better Off Dead.
This is one of my favorite "so bad it's good" movies!
A real gem. It got everything right. Good story, good acting and charming, likeable characters.
Happy to say that I did see this in the theater at the time and have always been a fan.
I remember this one. Loved it.
I do love the modern day being able to find movies like this streaming online pretty easily.
Loved this movie!! Thank God for Cinemax playing this on repeat.
DID YOU JUST SAY ZERO BOYS???!!
I don't know anyone else that's ever seen that movie!!
Love this, saw it in theaters, one of my favs.
This was for sure one of my top fav flicks growing up. Loved it. Watched it at least 8x before I was even 15 lol
I'm surprised that you didn't mention the rumor that the younger-sister character in the movie supposedly inspired the look and personality of Buffy the Vampire-Slayer. =)
Such an retro synthwave movie and defines the 80s
Saw this in theaters back in 84. Loved the concept and thought it was a well done movie even if I was only 8. I liked the characters I should like and feared the ones I should fear.
Love this movie!
This and Stay Tuned are still my "go to" movies whenever I need a smile!
This is my favorite narrator. Cool voice, great vibe !
My #1 favorite Christmas movie. We watch it every year at my house!
This is my guilty 80’s pleasure, I mean I’m a sucker for 80’s horror but this one is that special must watch every couple of months
I saw this on cable back in 1985. It was cool and scary at the same time. Actually, Sharon punched Kelli in the face. The mall employees that kidnap the sisters were creepy. The two little kids were annoying.
