How could you not? Seriously she's almost impossible to find anything wrong with. I believe she went on to make like a ton of Hallmark and similar network movies.
I couldn't possibly count how times I've seen this film. My brother, cousin and I used to watch it over and over and over again. One of my all time favourites
Hey Minty! This film holds a special place in my memory. In the 80's, my sister worked for the production studio that made this film... so she got to be an extra! And during your review you can see her. At time mark 11:05 there is a shot of 3 people at the party. The blonde on the left is my sister, the brunette in the center is my cousin and the man on the right was her husband. She was also used for a few more shots but you don't see her face. These videos are always entertaining!
@@gphoenix51 That's what I thought, I wanted one pretty bad back then and I instead purchased a Colt Gold Cup 1911. I bought a Blu-ray copy of this movie and I really appreciate it, I also have a DVD version, and a mint VHS copy with a perfect box. Chopping Mall is a blast as well...
Hey, Minty! I cannot thank you enough for reviewing this b-movie classic. I had already seen Night of the Comet at some point (because I recognized many of the scenes when I recently rewatched it). But sadly, then, I hadn't picked up on just how good it is. So, it took you to help me unearth this forgotten gem.
Thank you so much for this mini documentary. That movie is great. I really miss the old Sherman Oaks Galleria and the 1980's really bad. The last time I went in the old one as shown in your video was 1992. You could go in there to escape the heat, cold, or rain. The old one was completely torn down and the new one is what we have now. The new one is an outdoor mall with offices.
I absolutely hate the new outdoor "malls". They ruined a place I used to go with my grandma and mom in pompano fashion square. Don't even get me started on how Macy's ruined Burdines 😢. I think it would've been more successful if they'd just bought it and let it be. It had a pretty cool Florida vibe. Back before we were known for what weird random dudes do in the middle of our state at a Waffle house.
Grew up with this movie. My Mother is a Horror Fanatic and adored this film. Both my parents would watch this every year almost religiously without fail. Thanks for this Minty, such an underrated film.
Oh Man i loved this movie as a kid. I saw it after my Mom rented it for me way back. It felt so real, and yeah as a kid i totally identifed with them, wanting to go do stuff you have never been allowed to, take what you want, etc. As a kid who didn't dream of being to do what you want, when you wanted, etc. Exploring any place you wanted without some adult telling you what to do. Plus Oh My God i had a thing for Reggie. She was not only beautiful, but strong, and smart, and really cool. Catherine Mary Stewart's portrait of Reggie set the tone for the exact kind of woman i wanted in life. Samantha was really cool too, goofy, but strong when it mattered. Plus both girls maintained their moral compass from start to finish. Something we could all hope to do in their situation. This was a Girl Power movie that didn't have to tell people it was about Girl power. It didn't make the men weak in order to make the women seem strong like so many movies today do. The girls badassness overpowered the movie, something missing from today's filming. I think i've seen this movie over the years at least 20 times off and on. It's too bad Stewart wasn't in more movies back then. She was a real leading lady.
Minty….I always visit your channel ….a place of escape…..a place of comfort…..a place that puts a smile on my face…. Like when I was a kid in the 80’s! Thanks bro! Your the closet thing to a time machine!
During the shopping montage there is a very iconic frame where where Sam sets her submachine gun down on a display table covered in high heels. I feel like a painted version of that frame would have made an EXCELLENT on-brand minimalist movie poster. Either that, or the shot of when Reggie is riding home on Larry’s motorcycle and she stops at a light next to an empty car with the red sky blazing behind her.
It's great you mentioned the fact "Night of the Comet" was a forerunner of strong female leads in science fiction movies to be followed by Sigourney Weaver in the Alien franchise on the big screen and Buffy The Vampire Slayer on the small screen. When I first saw the film in the 80's I couldn't help thinking how bad could an apocalypse be if the last two females in LA were Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney. The first order of business; repopulate the Earth.
Alien was released in 1979, and Ripley kicked alien ass from that point forward. Not to take anything away from Stewart and Maroney, their take was awesome, and NOTC is one of my favorite movies.
Meeting Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelly Maroney in person was great and watching them as they reenact some of their popular lines just shows how much fun it was to make this film
Regarding the movie poster, the people on top are not zombies but Doris, Chuck and the neighbors watching the comet, hence the glare in their eyes. The doorway image pays homage to the scene when Reggie arrived home and leaves the door wide open like she lives in a barn. The darkness/space of the poster is to represent the darkened home.

One of my favorite movies. Such a fun watch. Just an FYI about the Sherman Oaks Galleria, the original Galleria was torn down and a new complex was built. The original mall was 5 floors and it was a closed building. The new structure is more of an open hallway with very few shops. All it really has now is a couple of good restaurants, a beauty school, a gym, and a movie theater. The new mall is actually the photo you showed. Great video!!👍😊
So many people has said that this is their favorite line from the movie and it is among the top 2, but Reggie's reply is even better. "The car didn't know the difference".
You are my kinda Movie guy. 80s made some of the best B flicks of all time...Heck I though I was the only person who ever saw this one..lol STILL LOVE IT.
Night of the Comet has one of the best creepy movie lines delivered by the character Willy - the one when he mentions something about "not in your worst nightmares...", and then pulls down his sunglasses. It almost sends chills down your spine. That actor played that character p-e-r-f-e-c-t-l-y.
Good review! It was an excellent movie and everybody should see it. I really admire what they did with the low budget. All of the characters were likeable. The song was very nice too. The movie had a very comfortable vibe to it and was an admirable achievement.
Lol I just rewatched this movie a couple of months ago and had to look up the character on IMDB because I knew I recognized him but couldn’t remember from what.
Saw this in the theatre the night it opened. First movie I saw alone, no friends or parents. I loved it then because it was from my age perspective. The concept was interesting and the character Reggie was beautiful by 1980’s standards. Tempest was my favorite video game at the time so I appreciated the nod to contemporary culture. Love this movie.
I liked Kelly Maroney's character Samantha (I'm not sure I got the actress's name right) and I think she is underrated as an actress. She starts out carefree in the beginning, perhaps in denial of what is happening, but the scene where she's with Reggie on the police car talking about her friends and recalling how one of her friends was flunking algebra and trying to keep her parents from finding out she just subtly starts to break down realizing her friend is now dead was just perfect. I think movies these days need to go from focusing on star power and markets to just having good writing. If you have good writers and good actors the movie will take care of itself.
Back in the 80’s we did a triple feature on VHS at my buddy’s house, with Night of the Comet, The AST Starfighter, and Dreamscape. At that age we thought it pretty wild that Catherine Mary Stewart was in two of them, and the main character’s name in TSL and D was Alex. Looking back now, the last part isn’t all that surprising, but a nice unexpected double feature with CMS.
I always thought that it was pretty obvious to anyone that's seen the movie, that the doorway on the poster (with Reggie standing in it) is meant to represent her stepping out of the safe room that she awoke in, and out into the world of the Comet-Dead. It's kind of a callback to her leaving the theatre the next morning, and looking out onto the bright (red) light of the day after the comet.
Absolutely one of my favorite 80s B-movies. Dig deep and find Head Office---amazing ensemble cast, surprisingly good script, and when Alan Smithey is involved you gotta see it!
This was one of my favorite movies. I loved the humor and I think as a teen the idea of being able to drive any car you find and not having to go to school or go to work was so freeing. I also was a huge Buffy series fan.
Nice video!! I love seeing this underappreciated gem get attention. Have to strongly disagree on the name part, though. I lived through the 80's and must have seen Night of the Comet about 100 times on cable TV -- it got major play on there and that's one of the biggest reasons why it is such a cult classic now. But let me tell you, if it had been called Teenage Comet Zombies it wouldn't been shown anywhere on except on USA's Up All Night (which I'm sure played it once or twice anyway). Night Of The Comet may seem generic in comparison but it gave it an air of legitimacy that ensured a long shelf life on premium cable channels.
I agree. Teenage Comet Zombies would have been a spoofish Corman/Romero smash-up. Night of the Comet has some dignity in it without directly referencing any Living Dead.
I watched this when I was a teenager. I loved the fact that the main character survives the comet because she's hooking up with a guy in the movie theater's projection booth.
I came of age in the 80's and everything about it is pure nostalgia for me. I love that the budget was kept low as this makes people be more imaginative in how they do their production. I would have loved to seen a sequel. -- One thing not on your list is that idea of the world being positioned by the trail of a comet goes back at least to 1913 and Arthur Conan Doyle's (yeah, the guy who invented Sherlock Holmes) short story "The Poison Belt" in which a passing comet apparently kills the entire world except for a small band of adventurers that hold up in an airtight room with an oxygen tank. -- Oh, and BTW, pineapple does belong on pizza, but you need to pair it with bacon!
Minty! You keep helping me to relive, and to re-examine these huge influences from my childhood. Like probably 3/4 of the videos you've done, I had this one on VHS tape And probably watched it 10 times before I was 10.
"It's Saturday morning. Where are the kids?" - The way they emptied out Los Angeles and the Sherman Oaks mall was that they filmed much of the outdoor stuff early in the morning on Christmas Day. Also, as you mentioned the tight release schedules that may have prevented Heather from playing Samantha, maybe, maybe not. Consider that Catherine Mary Stewart was in both The Last Starfighter (July 13, 1984) and Night of the Comet (November 16, 1984) and it makes you realize that maybe Heather could have. Still, I think Kelli did awesome and like her in that role.
I love this movie! SO few people know about it and it is great. I remember i first saw it on my old B&W tv aired on fox. All the color tvs in my home would not pick up the station (ah being a kid in the 80's) I was blown away by the mood and the premise of it. I think this movie and Nigh of the living dead were the major influences that molded me into loving dystopian movies as a kid.
I was a young boy in the 80s. I don't remember this movie at the theatre. My most memorable movie from 84 is The Terminator. What I do remember about night of the comet is when Halley's Comet came by in 86. Everyone was talking about this movie. They played it a Lot on HBO. I watched this so many times in 85 and 86. So of course when they released it on blu-ray. I bought it.
It didn't make it to the theaters in my part of Indiana either. I didn't see it until 1986 when it was, ironically, the very first video my parents rented when they finally got a VCR. Been a fan ever since.
PS Gotta Say Minty your awesome. I don't comment much as i'm watching youtube on xbox. But i had to come give you some props!!!! Love when you go back and remind me of all these great B-movie, or 80's movies that feel my heart with such warmth. Good on you dude, keep it up.
I love this movie. It was the first I'd seen with intelligent zombies, I love how they degenerate from intelligent to mindless beasts. awesome ad always Minty!
This was one of those movies that, as a 12 yr old flipping channels one night, fell upon this gem. Loved it so much that I woke up my brothers that same night, because back then cable movies would repeat themselves, so watched again from the beginning. Good memories, Good "B" Movie!
Caught the ending of this film about 20 years ago on TV and it stuck in my mind but I didn't know what it was called until now. Watched the whole thing last night and its a great 80's sci-fi 'B' grade movie which had appeal to teenagers who fantasise about being left to play about in world with just themselves and their teenage friends. Although in reality the fantasy would quickly turn to a nightmare as soon as the fresh food and water ran out. Wish I was still a teenager!
If you were in Los Angeles in 1984 this movie's low-budget realism will resonate with you. Unlike many glossier sci-fi entries, this one feels as if you could wake up one morning and...
A couple movies that would be awesome for you to review are The Last Starfighter, Krull, Sword and the Sorcerer, Willow, Space Hunter, Swamp Thing, Treasure of the Three Crowns, and Battle Beyond the Stars 👍🏼👍🏼💯😎
Fun facts: The budget was so low there was only “Two Zombie” in the whole movie: the zombie in the ally and the zombie in the house, not including the sisters nightmare with the “Zombie “ cops! 😂🤣 they basically where fighting non zombie humans for the most of the movie: the clowns in the mall and the crazy scientists 😅😂 Still an epic 80s awesome cheesy classic 😅
Absolute gem! Regina reminds me so much of “Hope” from Days of our Lives, they could be twins. Such a fun movie and I love Samanthas character...”we’re talkin ghost town!”
One of the three films Catherine Mary Stewart is remembered for... The other two being Weekend At Bernie's and, of course, The Last Starfighter. She was and still is VERY cute. I used to confuse her with Mary Stuart Masterson because of the similar names. MSM came a little bit later and had a slightly longer career in the late 1980s through about the mid/late-1990s. They both (semi?) retired from acting to get married and raise families. I'm amazed Tempest (1981) appears here but the movie was released in 1984! That was about a year after she finished shooting The Last Starfighter and under a year after the videogame market collapse (1983) of the 1980s. Videogames DID make a comeback in a huge way thanks to Nintendo and its NES console system a few years later. The NES, itself, actually came along in 1985 but hit its peak in the late 1980s.
Major thanks for actually using the music from the soundtrack that first song is awesome and always has been.no mention of the connection between this and Star trek since after all this was chakotay first major role.
This movie was a breath of fresh air when I saw it by accident. The premise was cool, girls were clever and the movie just lives in it's own world to me. You root for Reg and Sam because you are Reg and Sam.
I love this movie, I saw it on cable back in the early 2000s and just fell in love and every time I see it's on cable or a streaming service I watch it again and again! Also there is a part in the movie where the camera is just showing the empty streets of the city and in one corner, I think the lower right, you just get a glimpse of a woman coming out of a building, and it wasn't any of the actresses in it, it was clearly just some woman who probably didn't know a movie was filming at that time, I guess even the director and editor didn't see it! It's been awhile since I saw it, so I can't remember when it happened, just looks around in the parts when they are just showing a view of the streets and buildings and you will likely spot her, lol!
I happen to like pineapples on my pizza. But as for this video topic, I love this movie and I that you see Robert Beltran who later on in his career played Chakautay on star trek voyager. I probably spelled the character name wrong but people can figure out what I mean. I am really glad you shared this and I will tell you that it took me a long time to get the DVD. Definitely deserving of a sequel. Thanks again for Minty.
Some corrections about malls: A) The Sherman Oak*S* (plural) Galleria (This is in "The Valley" proper. Where "Valley Girls" came from.) was used for the interior shots of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but for the exterior (pictured 7:57 ) They used the Santa Monica Place. (Santa Monica is over the hills south of the valley and technically the west side of Los Angeles proper.) B) Though they refer to "The Galleria" in the film, The Sherman Oaks Galleria was NOT used for any shots in Terminator 2. Everything seen was all Santa Monica Place (including those employee-only corridors, which were real.) until the kid jumps out of the parking area with his motorcycle. At this point they transition to the Northridge Mall, which is back in "The Valley" on the far north side. While this was the biggest of all these malls, it felt pretty far especially in LA traffic which was already terrible by the mid 80s. C) Everything else stated is accurate, which is impressive for Minty, given he's basically talking about my living room from the other side of the planet several decades later.
@@SergioArellano-yd7ik I was not referring to "Valley Girls" the film. I was referring to the actual demographic. "Valley Girls" originally came from the Valley, hence the name, ...not the South Bay.
+1, I waited for this movie to come out in video (Beta, I may add) so my sorry 12 year old butt could watch it. Thank you for showing the little clip of Rebecca bouncing around the mall drinking soda in almost nothing... Lots of tween memories there, it took me back to 1984 for a second.
Night Of the Comet wasn't really a Sci/Fi or Horror or Comedy but had hints of each genre and I love it. I discovered on VHS at my local video store about 20 years ago and recently I purchased it on Blu Ray and rewatched it for the 4th or 5th time and it's very enjoyable.

Matt Stewart The Burbs, hell yeah!
Matt Stewart yes
The Burbs takes place in the Buffy-verse. Pass it on.
the burbs the burbs and the burbs. greatness. bill paxton again uh uh uh uh uh. what a character. and actor
"Try before you Deny, bro!" Argyle Stranger Things 2022
Oh man, I actually saw this movie when I was a kid and loved it. Haha, definitely one of my favorite Christmas movies.
One of the most underrated movies of the decade
Holy crap! I didn't even remember this. Thanks for the heads up and review Minty! Roll on brother!
One of the best movies of the 80's.
This movie is in my collection, it is well written, not like many today movies that suffer from poor writing.
Minty! You keep helping me to relive, and to re-examine these huge influences from my childhood. Like probably 3/4 of the videos you've done, I had this one on VHS tape And probably watched it 10 times before I was 10.
I wouldn't mind seeing 10 Amazing Facts About The Beastmaster.
Micheal Cormier Yes!! Codo and Podo!!!
I loved The Beastmaster
OMG the Beastmaster !! - such a cheesy movie !! yet I watched it 30 times as a kid - do it please !!
love that movie The Jun Horde and hot Tanya Roberts then they made a retarded sequel
My fav movie
One of my all time favorite 80’s movies.
That one girl did bounce alot. More so than Tigger
Oh my goodness, thanks for this! Can never get tired of watching this over and over , over the decades!
I remember that too. I have a lot of great memories attached to this time period and this movie.
It didn't make it to the theaters in my part of Indiana either. I didn't see it until 1986 when it was, ironically, the very first video my parents rented when they finally got a VCR. Been a fan ever since.
Bill Megatron Threesome!
I have loved this movie since it came out and watch it every time it is on TV, which is often. Just watched it again last week. Great vid.
Teenage Comet Zombies screams "don't pay money to see this movie."
Indeed. What a horrible name.
PS Gotta Say Minty your awesome. I don't comment much as i'm watching youtube on xbox. But i had to come give you some props!!!! Love when you go back and remind me of all these great B-movie, or 80's movies that feel my heart with such warmth. Good on you dude, keep it up.
Kelli Maroney was my first actress crush from this movie.
Ok I'll take Katherine Mary Stewart
@@MonzaRacer definitely lol
Yes another of my most favorite movies!!!! I saw it in the theater and own it on VHS, DVD & Blu Ray. Catherine Mary Stewart is PERFECTION on display.
I love this movie. It was the first I'd seen with intelligent zombies, I love how they degenerate from intelligent to mindless beasts. awesome ad always Minty!
Black zombie in Alley with a wrench "Come here !!!" white girl was actually the intelligent one
One of my favorite movies of all times! Great video!
One of my all-time faves. there are so many great 80s movies that they remake and ruin the movie so I hope they stick with the original.
👏👏👏
+1 for swamp Thing!😎
Oh yeah
I forgot to add to my list the movie Metal Storm 👍🏼💯
well....guess i'm not special...you just listed all my favorite childhood movies.
space hunter adventures in the forbidden zone one of my fav night of the comet Cherry 2000 the last starfighter Laserblast coolness i have to say
Treasure of the “four” crowns was too far off the radar. I’m one of the 5 people in the US that has actually seen it in the theaters.
Fun facts: The budget was so low there was only “Two Zombie” in the whole movie: the zombie in the ally and the zombie in the house, not including the sisters nightmare with the “Zombie “ cops! 😂🤣 they basically where fighting non zombie humans for the most of the movie: the clowns in the mall and the crazy scientists 😅😂
Still an epic 80s awesome cheesy classic 😅
Catherine was such a beautiful girl. My favorite in those days. Long live TLS.
Absolute gem! Regina reminds me so much of “Hope” from Days of our Lives, they could be twins. Such a fun movie and I love Samanthas character...”we’re talkin ghost town!”
The young lady that starred as Regina was a cast member in Days of our lives in the mid-80s
One of my favorite movies of all time
Whenever I need a strong dose of the 80s, I watch this movie. The music, the arcade machines, the theater carpet all takes me back.
I'll never forget stumbling onto this amazing B-Movie gem on Saturday afternoon TV... It's so simple, brilliantly cult, and perfectly campy.
Always loved this movie thanks for feature!
Favorite 80s movie ever!! Thanks Minty!!!!
Robert Beltran, aka, chakotay!
Aaron Greenfield: Before the awesome tattoo.
Cretinous Jester. And even before he joined the maquis!
I was thinking the same thing! Still good though
After being Chuck Norris's sidekick
Raoul
Major thanks for actually using the music from the soundtrack that first song is awesome and always has been.no mention of the connection between this and Star trek since after all this was chakotay first major role.
More movies have been filmed in the Sherman Oakes Mall than in some countries. Brick dust for the win!
Yes, pineapple does belong on pizza... just so long it's balanced with pepperoni.
Love your reviews, Minty. Keep up the good work. Subscribed!
I watch this movie at least twice a year
So glad this movie is getting love I’ve always loved this movie since I was a kid
This movie was a breath of fresh air when I saw it by accident. The premise was cool, girls were clever and the movie just lives in it's own world to me. You root for Reg and Sam because you are Reg and Sam.
shure, that is one title that is worth to be rewatched or for the Moviemakeers themselves to be remastered one day.
One of my favorite movies of all time. It was a great, fun zombie film.
Some corrections about malls:
A) The Sherman Oak*S* (plural) Galleria (This is in "The Valley" proper. Where "Valley Girls" came from.) was used for the interior shots of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, but for the exterior (pictured 7:57 ) They used the Santa Monica Place. (Santa Monica is over the hills south of the valley and technically the west side of Los Angeles proper.)
B) Though they refer to "The Galleria" in the film, The Sherman Oaks Galleria was NOT used for any shots in Terminator 2.
Valley Girl was filmed at the Del Amo fashion plaza in Torrance in the South Bay. It was the biggest mall in the world when it opened
@@SergioArellano-yd7ik I was not referring to "Valley Girls" the film. I was referring to the actual demographic. "Valley Girls" originally came from the Valley, hence the name, ...not the South Bay.
Wow how don't you have more subscribers. I love your channel ❤
Thanks for doing this movie, I was beginning to see red!
Mabey there was just a red filter over the screen?
Would love to see you do Streets of Fire one day :) terrific film and highly underrated at the time it flopped and good cast
Excellent suggestion!
Agreed!
Yes! Such a great film! Very underrated indeed. Great suggestion 👍🏻
The music was great.
Streets of Fire is a perfect 80's film. Walter Hill made the 80's as much as Cameron or Hughes
Just watched it because of you Minty and it’s brilliant. Thanks
How about doing the Last Starfighter?
Back to sleep, Louis, or I'm telling Mom about your Playboys!
Starfighter-14 I like surprises. Let Minty do what he wants in the order and way he wants. He'll either get to what you want or not.
"I'll have it all figured out by the time we reach the Frontier."
*alarm sounds a few seconds later*
"What's that?"
"The Frontier."
108johnny if i could put more likes to this comment i would
yes the fuckin zintari at last
Minty Ty love, my favorite 80s guilty pleasure!💖💞💕
