My Mum took me to the cinema to see that movie when I was a teenager. Trust me, people were rolling on the floor from laughing, I have never seen anything like that. As I'm watching it now as an adult it's quite terryfing and maybe eve depresing because it really shows you the struggle of an adult life that anyone can absolutely relate to. It was hilarious back when it came out, all the gags, the way they talk and how they talk-comedy at its best! But now I can see the other, like, hidden meaning of this movie and its quite the opposite of comedy. Thats why its a good cinematography in my opinion.

It's a great movie, a comedy - drama set in Polish culture and the realities of life from the perspective of a man - teacher suffering from OCD symptoms,. However as I was looking at the english subtitles, I had a thought that it was not funny and the translation just lost that "thing" (an ambience or so) which is here very characteristic and unique . I am afraid you lost something here and being a non-polish makes it difficult to really get the movie (due to references to our mentality etc.). Thank you anyway for watching Dzień Świra and for your general openness and curiosity.

"Dzień Świra" is one of the best. Actually it's a tragicomedy. About the divorce part: Since the majority of Christians in Poland are Catholic, when you have a sacramental wedding in the Church, you are not permitted to divorce your spouse (in Church). However, if problems arise in your marriage, you can pursue a legal separation and/or a civil divorce.
Another option is to seek an annulment. This process aims to determine whether the marriage was valid from the outset. If it is determined that there was no valid marriage in the first place, you can obtain an annulment and are then free to marry someone else, as your initial marriage did not have sacramental validity.

The description of the movie is grossly oversimplifying. It's a comedy-drama about a guy with existential crisis that's facing the reality of empty promises and hopes about the present. As a kid I thought it's pure comedy. With age I learnt it's more of a drama.
Ofc he is in fact a teacher and he gets angry at people but that's like describing the Godfather as a movie about a mafia boss that kills people.
His son and his job are just 2 of many topics he deals with in this movie. About the divorce. Ofc you can get a divorce but marriage in Catholicism works that you marry for live so all those people that got divorce after such wedding, in the eyes of Church are still a marriage even thought legally they are divorced.
It's a great movie but I don't know if it's good movie to recommend for foreigners. You will get part of it but people from the ex-Eastern block would get a lot more of it but still they would lose the part known only for Poles and also a lot in translation. Even the way of how the sentences he says to himself are build is a reference to style of our great writer Mickiewicz.

The film is from 2002. 20 years ago, Poland applied for admission to the European Union and children learned English intensively in schools (previous generations learned Russian and German). We wanted to be part of the western world and be able tu use its 'common language'. Some children had difficulty with the new language, which is shown in this film, but today most people in Poland speak English quite well :) Especially younger generations.

  • @Genesivare
    @Genesivare ปีที่แล้ว

3:20 - partially. But it's also a way of showing "like father, like son". The main protagonist of this movie (father) is the eponymous "wacko" who has various insecurities, weird habits, nervous tics and daily rituals that he follows morbidly to the letter every day - even though they make no sense, do not make him in any way happier and only make his life even more miserable. He has to dress up in exactly "right" manner or he'll be sick. He has to sit on his couch in exactly "right" way, or he'll be sick. He has to count to seven while doing any mundane thing in his life - including pouring a hot water into his cup of coffee/tea so seven drops will follow or taking a piss long enough to reach seven-second rule. And so on, and so on.
This scene (as many others in this movie) pretty much shows that his weird, sick habits have literally influenced his own son and it seems the latter is going to be just as much of an unhappy "wacko" as his father. Problems and pathologies are passed on from generation to generation.
I would reccomend you watching this whole movie, but... 1) I don't know if there is a DVD with English translation available (and this one here is quite poor anyway, to be honest); 2) I don't think you'll understand all the nuances in it since you don't live in Poland.
I actually watched this movie (again) not so long time ago and it made me very depressed. Because not only none of the problems this movie addresses have improved since its premiere, but in some regards, the situation has gotten even worse.

I am in my now late 40s and I often feel very much like the protagnist in the film, it's about the feeling of waste, dissapoitment with reality, unfulfilled dreams from the youth and lack of optimism about the future, the feeling that the Polish reality gives you. I've always felt however much you try, it's always going to be not enough in Poland. Maybe it's a generational thing, my childhood was in late communism, in my teens I went through the political transition to end up in the wild capitalism of the 90s which very much continues to this day.

There is a lot of context needed to understand what's going on here. The movie is about the teacher guy who has severe OCD. We're introduced to his quirks and strange daily rituals early on and we're lead to believe that he's the titular "wacko". But as the movie progressess, it makes you question who's more insane - the protagonist, or the world that surrounds him. He just wants to live his life in peace but he's being disturbed every step of the way - be it his dumb neighbours, the uninterested school kids, the laughable teacher's salary, his slutty ex-wife, etc. He actually cherishes his son and wishes he could live a normal life despite his learning disability and just the fact that he's his son - fearing his wacko side will pass onto him (as we see in the "clothing ritual" shown at 3:00 mark)

This scene is more sad because a main character and a boy's mom are divorced and he just comes to visit his son time to time and it is like he has no idea what to talk about with the son and he chooses to ask him of English (as he never have learned himself properly). And yes, Sylwunio is silly but honest and Adam is very bright but frustrated and overthinking... I recommend you to watch it all. (And no, you can get a divorce when married in church but this is how Sylwunio believes how it works according to the Catholic Church principles)

4:55 when you take a church wedding (you actually got civil wedding too at the same time, unless you get married before in civil way before) you still can get divorce, but only in civil way, and you still are married by church, so for example you can't get married in church for a second time then (at least not till your ex is still alive) and while being in a church you can't receive the eucharist, at least if you have a new partner (cause it's a sin, it's considered as cheating by church), if you get civil divorce with your ex, but you still are single, not seeing anyone, it's considered by church as being faithful to your ex-spouse still and then you can still receive the eucharist. There is technically something that is called an church divorce, but it's pretty hard to get one, cause most of the time you have to prove that for example you were forced to get married... although i heard that if you pay enough you can still get church divorce tho... but in church law it's not really considered as a divorce, but more like getting annulment of your marriage... so yeah...

The actor who plays the main character's son is actually the son of the director of this film... the film itself is autobiographical and shows the relationship with his son, and in other parts "We are all Christs"("Wszyscy jesteśmy Chrystusami"), about his son's alcoholism and drug addiction or difficult relationships, "Ajlawju", or work in the movie "Nothing Funny"("Nic śmiesznego")..

the dressing scene does not represent the difference between generations. This scene depicts the inheritance of habits from parents. Adam (father) has obsessive-compulsive disorder. every activity takes him a lot of time because it has to be done perfectly. There are many scenes throughout the film showing the main character's contortions

"Dzień Świra" ("Day of the Freak") is a comedy-drama, but most people I know who watched this film remembered it only from the comedy scenes... Under the guise of a comedy, this film talks about many mental problems, especially men's (because of course the main character is a man) and how difficult it is to is to live with them pretending that everything is fine, it also talks about parenting problems, parenthood, divorce, life as a divorcee and many others. If someone can read the underside of this film, they know that despite everything it is beautiful and touches on important topics, it tells the story of a human being who can be each of us one day... Just like the continuation of this film, "Wszyscy jesteśmy Chrystusami" ("We Are All Christs"), which tells about other problems in life, it introduces a bit of an element of messianism, which shows the martyrdom of man and compares him to Jesus Christ himself and there is less comedy and more drama in it, I also highly recommend it! Both films are able to teach us something, make us reflect or change our worldview, they are really good films, but as I said, you need to be able to watch them as you need to in order to understand the message.

The subtitles are horrible, but I wouldn't come up with any better than this. There's just so many details lost in that translation, but that's strictly because how differently those languages work.

Adaś Miałczyński is a symbol full of symbolism and smiles for the Polish audience. The most significant thing is that he is an irritated intellectual who reads the "gazeta wyborcza" newspaper, and perhaps that's why he has a nervous breakdown. Interestingly, the well-known editor of the "gazeta WYBORCZA" newspaper was supposedly a Polish opposition activist, but he protected communists from being held accountable. He was a Polish Jew whose brother sentenced Poles to death, and he himself was a communist judge who sentenced Polish heroes. He hid in Sweden. In this newspaper, books and articles appeared that distorted history, such as the so-called "paszkwil wyborczej," which described how Poles during the Warsaw Uprising were killing Jews instead of fighting against the Germans. And recently, interesting materials came out in which the drunk Michnik-Szechter kisses General Jaruzelski and says he loves him. They made his family rich by allowing the newspaper and their printing, providing machines.

I'm sorry mate, but this movie is not easy to understand for someone who is not native Polish. It's as if a foreigner who doesn't know history wants to understand the historical connections between the Scots and the English or something like that.

It's a drama AND comedy. Comedy until you're old enough to understand and relate to the main character, then it's a drama.

Maybe I'm in minority , but I did not like this film at all.
And let me take this opportunity to once again ask for you reaction to one of numerous videos shoving the most Polish dance of all - polonaise or polonez (in Polish) and react to one of mamy videos showing Poles dancing it.
I would mostly recommend a video "NAJPIĘKNIEJSZY Polonez Studniówka 2023 "Jedynka" Opoczno " from a prom in a town of Opoczno and a video from the Guiness record in polonaise dance in Zamość -video titled "Zamość Bicie Rekordu Guinnessa - Polonez". But remember to get some theory first , at least from the Wikipedia under "Polonaise".
I will repeat this until I you make it.😁

I don’t think a foreigner is able to fully understand this movie and others directed by Marek Koterski (his real life son is playing in the scene you’re commenting). These are not movies to be enjoyed, they are very depressing. They may seem like comedies at first glance, but they are more like psychological thrillers or dramas. Basically, they are telling the story of the director’s life, not literally probably, but who knows.
I can recommend watching Kiler and Kiler’ow Dwóch with Cezary Pazura. These are also truely Polish and are considered to be iconic in our cinematography.

You have to remember that this movie is not a comedy, it's a fucking drama, and only those who are or have been in such a fucking depression will fully understand this movie.
This film brilliantly shows what depression looks like and how it turns a person into a complete freak.

    It depends:
    When you're 0-25 it's comedy.
When you are 25++, it's a drama and a gray reality of life.
    😅😅😅😁😁
