    Another thing to check out is Needham's chocolates. They have in them: chocolate, coconut and potatoes (yes, i said potatoes). Very unique to Maine. Also, go to Shain's of Maine in South Sanford. They have a lobster roll (lobster in a toasted hot dog roll with either mayo or butter on top) and clam chowder for only $10.99!

      Hello Steven! Thank you for writing in! YES! Needham's were mentioned a lot in our survey, didn't make the top ten, but are DEFINITELY a must-try in Maine! Thank you for sharing a place to go too. What is your favorite Maine food overall?

    Love Maine blueberry. Blueberry muffins for breakfast. Born and raised in Maine, just north of Bangor. Also spent summers up in the county. Presque Isle on Grandparents potato farm. Baked beans,red hotdogs and brown bread every Saturday nite. The beans were made with molasses from Canada. It was sold in a carton like milk. Every Friday the fish truck came up to the middle of town. Thats when we got fresh fish. Clams for clam chowder, scallops, cod and flounder. Love Moxie. Such memories! Maine the way life should be.

      The molasses was sold by the carton! That's so different. Thank you for sharing. You must have a lot of great summertime stories, growing up on the potato farm.

      I live in Maine myself. I think the food here is top notch. I personally think Maines potatoes are the best!

    I’m from NJ near Whitesbog where the NJ blueberry was cultivated - I believe she used the wild blueberry to make the cultivated NJ blueberry. I love them both but prefer the Maine wild blueberry.

      Fiddleheads are still on my "to-eat" list. Looking forward to going back up there to try them in-season! Moxie was great.

    Another one, particularly popular with Mainers with roots up in Quebec, is Crêpes with fresh fruit (typically blueberries) and maple syrup.

    As a life long Maina' I think you got the top 10 nailed. Maybe Needems. They are a coconut potato mixed filling inside a coating of chocolate.

    • @tuesdaybingo
      @tuesdaybingo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello guitarkis49! Thank you for writing in and for your kind words! It's been a slamming couple months on my end, so thank you for your patience on a response.
      Needhams are delicious and were so close to making the top 10 after all surveys conducted. When I was up in Maine, I remember picking a few up near Moosehead Lake. The combination of the coconut, potato, chocolate, views of water and the smell/feeling of the fall's crisp air was an experience I don't think I'll ever forget.
      Just did a little light research: It seems they really started to become popular in Maine later in the late 19th century and were first made by an Irishman who emigrated to America, George Carter Needham.
      There has to be some sort of connection here with the potato. Both northern Maine and Ireland have prime potato growing regions. Maybe the comfortability of using potatoes was a no brainer for him.
      Also, the Mounds Bars were first made in New Haven, CT in 1920 - not too far after the "late 19th century." I wonder if needhams were the inspiration here?

    I don’t know anyone here that does that with beans lmao, although baked beans are very popular all year round. And most of us hate moxie lol.

    • @tuesdaybingo
      @tuesdaybingo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s so interesting! So who would you say drinks Moxie? More for tourists?
      The beans were a surprise to me too!

    • @Soupdeladog
      @Soupdeladog 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tuesdaybingo I’d say moxie is kind of a niche thing. Sorta like capers or natto, a weird flavor some people like that most don’t. I think people don’t really do that with beans because of the time commitment! I’m from a woodsy part of interior Maine and it’s more typical to smoke or braise meat all day on the weekend, often times venison or moose.

    I have lived in Maine for most of my life, I raked low bush blueberries for extra money when I was a teen. Very hard work! Did you know that lobster used to be prison food in Maine. Not anymore!!
