It’s so interesting because campaign 3 is my introduction to critical role and so Laudna’s Eldritch Blasts are just- what I thought that spell looked like across the board. I’m also very new to the scene so the idea of flavoring spells differently was entirely foreign to me. Great video btw!

I would recommend you try to find a compilation of Liam's spell descriptions as Caleb back in campaign 2. He used an ingredient pouch so the idea of him taking out these seemingly normal oddities then smashing them together and creating a spell is just so cool

most warlock players re-flavor and re-skin their eldritch blast to suit the personality and concept of their character :) other spells too, ofc, but Eldritch Blast especially, cause its such a signature spell for its class.

Customizing spells to the caster is really fun. I had a wizard that cast all of his spells as cerulean blue, like his hair color. Magic missile, light, fireball, all vibrant cerulean blue.
On a side note, I love Travis's reactions to Eldrich Blast and I would like to Rage.

I'm currently running a college of creation bard whose performance is painting. He has a staff sized paintbrush and a buckler sized paint pallet and he casts his spells using his paint. For example, using the spell "shatter" he pulls out his clearcoat and he paints a circle in the air, forming a glass panel, forces it forward, and shatters it. It's gets more fun with this like "Hypnotic Pattern" and "phantasmal force" ❤

I am playing a swarmkeeper ranger recently. The class specifically encourages one to tailor the spells to the theme of the class. So I picked the shape of the swarm to be firefly looking fragmented souls….yeah…so her story is that she is a statue come to life (via those souls) in a long forgotten and abandoned temple and now looks after the fragmented souls as their guardian. Because of her origin there is a certain portion of the souls that follow her around and help her perform her magic. So when I chose spells I chose ones I felt could convey that. Including a cold damage spell that is supposed to be the souls sending an undead like chill through the person. Even entangle I switched over to being the souls wrapping and twisting around those they catch. Spike growth is the souls seeping into the ground and then reshaping into thin tiny needles. And so on. Even zephyr strike is the souls attaching themselves to the arrow. It’s been fun to focus a bit on the visuals and manifestation of the spell for a themed character. Not that I don’t do that with pretty much all of them, but this is the most involved of the ones I have. The other that is a bit involved is manifested more in the languages he uses for the spells, because his quirk is that he is a linguistics nerd. It’s a cute quirk. Love to send him to the library because he is one of those types of people who builds a book fort in one of the aisles and is reading the entire stack little by little as he sits on the floor. He also goes to the market a lot and practices those languages too. He browses a lot which is what leads to some nice finds the dm puts in of some common and uncommon magic items.

My favourite Warlock is a Fae pact Half-Orc. I randomly determined his arcane colour is flourescent pink, so when he uses his powers, it comes out as flowers. Rose Dart eldritch blasts; Peonies growing in his beard for each False Life temp HP; Chrysanthemum Hellish Rebuke; a five-petalled palmate leaf for Mage Hand. Explosions of Sakura petals for Fae Step. All in a bright pink.

That's the fun part of making your magic your own: My Celestial Warlock is Asiatic inspired so I made them like Lotus petals that explode on impact, full inspo from Kiriko in OVW. She's also a Lunar Sorcerer multiclass so we started weaving in Moon Magic like in Elden Ring Glint Sorcerer for more eldritch star effects.

I've played 2 warlocks so far and flavoured the eldritch blasts differently for both
First was a Halfing Hexblade. They fired energy waves from their sword like Ichigo's Getsuga Tensho from Bleach
More recently I had an Aasimar Barbarian who multi-classed into Celestial Warlock. Her patron is the avatar of the goddess of war. She never really understood magic, but she knew weapons, so for her Eldritch Blast she would pluck spectral swords/spears/axes/etc out of thin air and throw them

  • @billystokes3917

A party member of ours was a circle of spores druid. Every spell she cast was described as being related to fungi in some way. It was really cool. Another player was a water genasi warlock who, whenever she cast a spell, would use her hair (which was made of water) as part of the spell. So the less spell slots she had the less hair she had, and when all her spell slots ran out she was bald. Flavouring spells and other stuff is so much fun! Makes your character feel a lot more unique.

Eldritch blast is "supposed" to mirror what kind of patron the warlock is bound to. Fjord was bound to a Fathomless patron, so his eldritch blasts were most likely flavored to look like blasts of sea water. Laudna is bound to a Undying patron, but is also multiclassed as a Shadow sorcerer, so her eldritch blast could look like anything from shadow tendrils to condensed globs of black ichor.

I have a Sword Bard who is a fire performer, and a lot of his spells centre around using fire breathing and fire eating. For Dimension Door, he spins his torch so fast it leaves an after-image circle that forms the Door, Sleep and Catnap involve blowing the components through the fire and generating clouds of soporific smoke, and his Immolation is just him performing a fire eating act.

I have a gestalt multiclass spellcaster and i flavor the magic from the different sources differently. to keep it short, scribe wizard spells look very plain basic fantasy unless altering it with scribe features or learning the spell from someone else.
dao patron warlock, earth theme, eldritch blast is the gathering/generation/enlarging of earthly material to shoot out as an attack, shadow blade is just dust floating in the shape of sword that gives way against the creatures struck, but confuses the creature into thinking it took damage. Using the pact spell slots overrides original source's theme for earth theme. for example changing the wizard spell magic missiles from energy bolts into pebbles.
clockwork soul sorcerer with spectral clocks and gears, primarily gears and accompanied with ticking or gear whirling sounds.

That's something I tell my players when they aren't sure how to engage in roleplay is to give your actions flavor. Don't just tell me that you're going to attack enemy A with you shortsword, describe what the attack looks like. What direction do you swing, what part of the body are you attacking, what sound are you making as you swing your sword.
Same for spells; What do you say for the verbal component, what hand gestures do you use for the somatic, how do you incorporate the material component if you aren't using a focus? What does your version of the spell look like? Is it blue fire? purple lightning? What does it look like when you heal someone?
Starting with that helps build confidence in a player's ability to roleplay and engage because it helps them get in the headspace of the character.
For RP encounters, one of my players is never sure what to do, so she doesn't roleplay really, but she tells me she really wants to. I tell her to just say anything. If you can think of an activity you want to engage in, or a person you want to talk to, blurt it out, and I'll ease into it to help you find your footing. She's gotten a lot better at RP recently; She's still super introverted and not super comfortable getting real deep into the RP since it's a party of 7 people plus the DM, but she actually talks to NPCs now, she even tries to steal stuff from time to time.
