Yup. To me, the movie up to that point was pretty bad and corny. But as I soon as John Candy appeared, he saved the movie for me. Brilliant, just brilliant in all his roles.
Originally, he wasn't in this movie. In the original ending, instead of going back to Wally World and taking a security guard hostage, Clark goes to Roy Wally's mansion in Beverly Hills and demands that Roy sing and dance to entertain his family. The swat team shows up and arrests Clark, Clark says goodbye to his family but then the attractive blonde shows up and it turns out she's Roy's daughter. She explains to Roy that Clark's not a terrorist, he really is on vacation with his family and he's a good man. Roy drops the charges and then says he's taking everyone to Wally World and is going to open it up special for them. The Griswolds are happy. Then they're on the plane home but find out it's going to Atlanta. They got on the wrong plane by mistake. John Candy was not in the original ending. When they came up with this ending, they offered the role of the security guard hostage to John Candy and he accepted.

I used to work at Legoland CA. In the winter they were closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. But they must not have made it very clear, because every Tuesday and Wednesday hundreds of people would stream into the parking lot, and then leave pissed. I would think of Vacation every time this happened.
I had that BB gun once! It was really cheap but it was made of cast (iron? Dunno) so it was good and heavy. Fell apart when I tried to disassemble it and springs and various pieces bounced out of positions and I couldn’t figure out how to get it back together.
Also wonder if they had not screwed around visiting all those other places and gone straight there would they have been able to get in on like the last day or something? I don’t know they never specified exactly when the park closed or when it would reopen, they just kept saying “two weeks”.

From what I gather, it took them 5 nights to get there: 1) The "almost fell asleep at the wheel and crashed" motel likely in MO. 2) Cousin Eddie's in KS. 3) The tent place in CO. 4) Some kind of pueblo-like motel that only got the minimal parking lot scene talking about the lost credit cards [Not a far distance from the last but maybe Edna slowed them down needing required rest]. 5) The motel in Phoenix.

If test audiences hadn't hated the original darker third act where Clark takes Roy Walley hostage, John Hughes would not have had to rewrite the final act, and that would not have led to John Candy's extended cameo. If that hadn't have happened, Candy would not have had his first connection with the man who he would do some of his most memorable work for, John Hughes.

I wish they would release the alternate ending, where clark goes to roy walleys house and makes his family sing and dance for his family at gun point, but it tested badly cause I guess test audiences thought that made clark too hateful of a character that he actually retorts to home invasion
