  • This week I want to discuss spraying finishes. I always get asked if I like to spray my poly or other finishes. The answer is YES!!!! I LOVE IT!!! Since starting to spray, I wouldn't have it any other way.
    In this video I share a couple of the guns I have used and some of the techniques that I like to us.
    Hope you enjoy.

    Thanks!

    Great video but your excuse for not wearing a mask just does not cut it. We test and quantify exposure. Your exposure with an HVLP is significant as the aerosol is so fine. Ten or twenty years from now, you will have a far greater risk of having a chronic respiratory disease. You are not invincible. Not being able to breathe really is a terrible way to go. This is professional advice.

    Excuse me....I have a question? Obviously your lawn mower is still orange...You didn't create a circus tent of plastic film before spraying, is over spray a concern? Does your mower have a nice polyurethane finish on it? Also, how long can material stay in the sprayer? Do you have to clean the gun between coats? Or can it live in the gun for a while? How much troll outrage did you have to endure for not wearing a nuclear radiation suit and WWII gas mask? 😁 I just bought a Fuji System and and gearing up for my first project. Thanks for the great video!

      I don’t worry about overspray too much honestly, especially with a good spray system. HVLP is able to be dialed in to where overspray is minimal. This is an old video and I have a Apollo turbine and also a Fuji gun now. At most, I’ll drape some inexpensive plastic sheets on nearby tools. In an enclosed space I will wear a mask but sometimes if I’m in an open area with a lot of airflow I won’t. Which isn’t necessarily right, but it’s my choice. As for the trolls, no matter what I do they will come out 🤣🤣

      Bent's Woodworking "ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS" wear a good quality mask that is appropriate for the chemistry of the product you are spraying. Urethane finishes are among the worst of the products you can spray without a mask or a hood using class D breathe air. Once they are inside your lung tissue they will harden just as if you you were spraying that tabletop, they will "never" be expelled, this will cause you too develop Emphysema...I doubt that you will believe my warning..."do the fu#king research yourself" , it will save your health.

    My question has to do with painting your shaker doors, for which you show using MDF for your panels. You mentioned priming before painting in one of your comments to a fellow You Tuber, using the Rockler sprayer. Have you found it necesry to spray any kind of sealer over the MDF first, as suggested by some other woodworking craftsman, or is the priming sufficient?? Enjoyed the video.

    Another way to spray a large surface like this table to insure even coating start at the middle of the table work toward yourself spraying to the edge. Go around they other side and spray that. Even overlap, even distance is critical.

    Love the video, answered a lot of my questions. I am in a bit of a jam in that I am building a massive solid hickory dining room table and didn’t do my research beforehand. I already put a natural oil based stain on to darken it a tad and got a few splotches. I am wondering if I should cover with spraying oil poly or can I use lacquer to finish? Could you see the splotches through the protective layer?

    • @bentswoodworking
      @bentswoodworking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will definitely still see them. The only way to fix it would be to sand it back, then try using a conditioner before reapplying the stain. Some woods take stain worse than others.

    When you do multiple coats in a day, do you clean the sprayer between each coat, or do you cheat and clean once at the end?

    • @bentswoodworking
      @bentswoodworking  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Dave, thank you for the question . If I am spraying multiple coats of polyurethane then no I will not clean the gun between coats. Since the coats are going on every two hours or so, nothing will harden inside of the gun. All I do is check the tip to make sure that no polyurethane is dried that will restrict the flow and that does happen from time to time. For just cleaning it in general once I am done spraying my coats I simply take it inside of the sink rinse it out with warm water and then I will take it back into my garage put a little bit of mineral spirits and it and fire the gun just to clean off the needle and internal parts. It's really that easy. Having to guns though makes it a lot better because I have one for my stain and paint and then one just for Polly. When cleaning the one for stains and pains it is a little bit more time-consuming just because of the product itself meaning the paint is thicker and stain is more oily. When I just had the one gun for everything I will be honest my cleaning practices did not exist and I was very bad about cleaning until I actually needed to use it but then the cleaning would take twice as long. Now that I have the second gun I'm a little bit better about it.

As for something doing outside, I recommend you use a spar urethane and not a poly. Spar is what you would want to use for outside due to its UV protection

      I believe it’s a 1.0 but I’m not certain off hand. I also believe it came with a extra size

      Thanks Jason. I’ve been starting out spraying a bit, and the clear finishes seem to work well - but the cheap sprayers don’t handle the latex paints well at all.

    When spraying try keeping your gun parallel to your work piece, this will insure a nice even coat

    You didn't say anything about % of diluting poly or with what did you dilute poly with?

      BIG JOE 245 I don’t dilute poly. There is no need with the sprayer. Paint does require thinning though

    So what ratio do you use when you use paint !!!!!

    • @bentswoodworking
      @bentswoodworking  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stephen Currie with paint, they do require thinning with water. The homeright comes with a piece that is used to check the viscosity of the paint. It's a timed thing. After a few times, I was able to eyeball it. It's a very simple system. Stain and poly require no thinning at all.

      To give you an idea for a full container, it would be 80-85% paint, 15-20 water.

    When use water based poly, do you use water based stain. Can you put water based poly successfully over an oil based stain.

    • @bentswoodworking
      @bentswoodworking  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Tollett great question. I almost always end up using oil based stain. It’s no problem mixing the two as long as you let the stain fully dry. I am usually overly safe on dry times. If the manufacturers recommendation is 24 hours, I will do 36. Hope that helps!

      Bent's Woodworking Thank you for quick reply. If you have a chance to make a video on spraying stain I know it would help me and probably many more people. So glad I found your channel. You explain things very well.

    • @bentswoodworking
      @bentswoodworking  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Tollett thank you Sir. I can look at doing something like that when I return from Ft Knox. What I can tell you now though is that spraying stain is even easier. You literally spray it on and then just wipe down all the excess. Downsides is it definitely makes a mess and you really need a nice, big open area. Typically I will only spray stain if I have multiple large pieces being stained the same color.

    Fine video, but you really don't explain "how" but spend most of your time discussing "should" you spray finishes.
    I suggest you update the title to reflect that.
