My brother and I grew up building models (he and I are both in our low 60's). We mainly built military stuff, tanks, planes and sometimes battleships. Many of them ended up as bb gun targets. But damn did we build models. We discovered airbrushing around the age of 15 or so and it was a game changer...
I am looking for a model for my brother who's turning 59. He has also built models forever. I am looking for something that's a bit complex. I also want to find the paints and glue if needed. Any tips?

So here's my story: This came into my suggestions several months back, decided to watch as I used to build models when I was 14-16. But I quit as I wasn't impressed with the models I made (brush marks, seams, missing/misplaced decals etc.), they looked horrible. But upon watching this video (and your other model builds), I thought I give it another try, using the knowledge and techniques you demonstrated. Bought new equipment and a nice airbrush to go with my new 1/72 F-14D (My favourite Fighter Jet). 8 days later I now have finished what is my best model ever, looks weathered, bleached and highly detailed, I couldn't be happier with the result.
So a massive thank you for the videos you make, I've learned so much and now thrilled to be back in the hobby!

I also grew up whith modeling mid 70s and stopped . Did my studies and went for South African military service, till late 80s. I started to do modeling 2017 and boy i am enjoying it. Every day as i look at the videos and tutorials i learn more ,then i start to build the model. Thank you it is wow. Keep the videos coming.

Always loved Hasegawa 1/48 scale kits. I personally think they are the absolute best model kits for aircraft in the market.

My Father and I built a B58 Hustler....He did almost all of it. He was in Strategic Air Command so I always love Jets and stuff. The first one I did was a F 104 Star fighter didn't do to badly.
I did my first model at five years old. I'm a huge history buff, mostly with WWII air campaigns in western Europe and the Pacific and modeling is a way to bring that history to life. My grandfather stoked that interest with books and my first model kit that was a snap-tite Spitfire. Now I have my six and four year old following that same passion with them doing models.
I plan on doing my own channel as well, just need to finish my last block of trade training!
That's great, passing on the model building tradition in your family! You might consider gearing your channel to teaching kids of the same ages as yours and filling in that niche of model building online.

Back when I was stationed on Kadena AB in Okinawa, we had Langley come TDY with their 22s. I worked Munitions and got to work on the flight line around these things all the time. Before they left, as thanks for all the hard work we did to make sure they got everything they needed while they were there, I got to go and do a walk around with the crew chiefs while they gave us a quick run down of their aircraft. Cockpit was a no go as well as the engine bays since they had secret squirrel stuff in there. We got to see the bomb and missile bays. It's really cool how fast those bays open to fire off weapons! Great job on the kit! Shows the passion you have for your hobby

When you talked about your older models turning out like garbage during your early days, I was right there some odd 8 years ago when I first started building model kits with paint and all that. Have a few of them up in my room still today, but could never get the look I wanted with just my brushes. Turns out all you need is a working airbrush and some tricks up your sleeve. Man, you're like the Bob Ross of this stuff; I've already created a shopping list and I'm ready to end my 4 or so year hiatus from model making!
That's terrific windyman56! An airbrush will make you a pro right away and you'll be greatly impressed as your skills grow with just a little practice. Your new models will be great, Have Fun!
Your work is gorgeous but I wanted to add in a few real life detail facts. I was stationed at Tyndall for five years and worked with the 43rd and 95th Fighter Squadrons as a GCI controller. F-22s carry AIM-9Ms, not AIM-9Xs. The actual weapons bay can't hold the 9x. F-22s don't show paint wear the way other aircraft do because they are repainted a lot more often. As part of their LO features their RAM is frequently maintained and that involves the paint job. While the weathered pain looks great, it's more realistic to show an F-22 with a more even paint job. There is an entire career field that compasses just LO material maintenance for the F-22s and F-35. They do a great job keeping it up! But again, your aircraft is a real work of art!
That is one of the best paint finishes I have ever seen on a model. I cannot tell just by looking at the model that it is a model and not a real Raptor.

Just discovered your channel. Very relaxing and informative! My first model kit I ever built all on my own was a Revell P-51D Mustang. I didn't have any paint other than a small bottle of Testor's matte black and a can of silver Krylon spray paint. The end result was absolutely terrible, but I didn't care. 18 years later I'm still building model kits and having a blast. Cheers!

my uncle bought me two model kits when i was younger. both iconic and beautiful. the huey vietnam helicopter and a old school single engine jet fighter. love the highly detailed models small enough to where you can stand back and apperciate it from every angle especially jets in hanger kits or machines n hanger bays or aircraft carriers with planes everywhere.
26:42 the heads up display [HUD] is facing backwards. But fantastic looking model!
Hi Trigger, thanks for the compliment! The HUD issue has been noted many times and the error is actually mentioned in this video's description. When I have featured this model in later retrospectives you might see that it has since been corrected on the model. 😉
Your airbrush technique is an art form in and of itself. I just got one and have a long way to go. Thanks for showing what’s possible. Model is flawless as well.

I am working on a revell f22 1/72 and I was trying to think the easiest way to do the camo pattern. Your method is perfect thanks for this.

I too look at your models and go wow, that’s pretty neat. And then I look at mine. And then I quickly cover mine back up and look at yours again. I use the same tools, glues, paints, etc, yet for some reason I get a completely different end product. At least mine is still vaguely airplane shaped, and gray(ish). I guess I’ll keep trying. At least you give me something to aspire to. Well done!

Round the time you made your build video, I had bought two of this kit (each round 90 USD MSRP), one to build with the landing gear down, all panels, bays, canopy open to display the interior detailing, and the other in flight. I started with a test-fit of the major pieces, finding the fit both seamless and effortless to effect.
Well into the assembly, however, I simply could not bring the upper and lower halves of the blended fuselage-wing structures together; one side would close with its counterpart, though the other despite my most determined effort obstinately remained round 4 or 5 mm (0.2”, or 3/16ths inch) apart on the horizontal. With the interior sub-assemblies in place, one half of the airframe inexplicably was discernibly wider than its counterpart. Using as much force as my bony, achy fingers could apply only stressed and deformed the polystyrene, yet still failing to close the gap. Had I continued assembly, and I somehow had managed to force together the two components, affixing them with gel cyanoacrylate (or maybe one of the new bonding agents), the polystyrene immediately adjacent to the glued area most likely would have cracked and split eventually. Short of that, it would have left a gap requiring strip stock, putty, etc., to fill; even worse, this would have resulted in a visibly asymmetrical model!
I want Hasegawa to account for this. I would like a refund, though it is not merely a matter of the price of the kits: the paints, the mixed-media aftermarket ejection seats, a seated USAF pilot, and Eduard’s photo-etched detail set.
You, Sir, are an absolute MASTER! There is one tiny detail that you omitted, though. On the bridge of the Raptor's nose is the Lockheed Martin AN/AAR-56 missile launch detector (MLD). A tiny dab of black paint on the tip of a sewing needle would fix that.

I'm really late to game on this one, having only just discovered your channel. I love the flashbacks about your childhood, my first model was a sprint car, I can only vaguely remember it. It did not survive rolling it across the hardwood floors. I was maybe 7, but I caught the bug for building. I enjoy your calm narration and yes modeling should be fun and not get bogged down with nitpicking.

Beautiful build. I got interested in models back in 1982. I was a young airman at Little Rock AFB, and LRAFB was my first duty assignment as a brand new combat controller. Long story short, I was involved in three fights, all alcohol related incidents, and was confined to my dorm room by my first sergeant. I had to build one model a week for him. They looked like shit. Then I started painting them, then I got an airbrush, then I started building them for the intel shop so the pilots would have a three D model of the different soviet threat aircraft, as well as the mobile SAMs the Russians had. Thirty-six years later I’m still at it watching cats like you and your mad skills. Only difference now is that I might smoke a blunt while I build and paint in my shop. Ha Ha I don’t drink anymore either. Keep up the awesome videos, and I like the background sound effects.

G'day Max, your techniques and skills are gobsmacking! Outstanding!
The 'Raptor' is, by far, my favourite modern warplane. I specialise in WW2 military aircraft and generally don't like modern jets; however, the Raptor is the modern-day version of the Spitfire. They both were special airframes in their day, their performance was ground-breaking and they both 'just look right'. They also stuck around past their logical active lives. (If jets were not invented there would still be factories producing better and even better Spitfires... they were that good.) So too with the Raptor. For a lot less money than the F-35 they should have concentrated on continually improving the Raptor.
Anyway, your tips and build advice have genuinely helped me to reduce some of the apprehension I get when I open a big kit and see all the intricate parts; thinking I'll never be able to pull this one off. I sometimes buy two of the same kit; using one 'for practice' and if it goes wrong at least, I've got lots of 'spare parts' to increase the chance of success in the second build. Thanks to you, I find I'm having more fun with my builds, hard or easy. Cheers, BH.

Max, another finely-crafted replica and entertaining video! I too am a former "Pointy Head;" I was an E/E Tech with the now-defunct 70th FS based at Moody where I began my career in Aviation chasing sparks on Warthogs. From a previous video of yours, I noted that you were once an Avionics Tech on Vipers, yes? Though I have no -16 time, I have friends and former colleagues that worked them and I can still remember their stories of getting stuck doing 'mono checks' on Friday nights! Ah, the good old days! Anyway, kudos on the well-orchestrated videos and skillful model construction! If you ever build an A-10 model and run across anything you'd like more info on, please feel free to shoot me an email. I may be getting older, but I still remember damned near everything I touched on that jet!

That is excellent craftsmanship. Love your detailing and weathering approaches, as well as your fills, math work on blowing up the paint scheme and decal diagrams to make your camo templates, and the marbling technique. Beautiful Raptor build. Only thing I see that you might want to consider is putting the HUD on the correct direction. (Yours is on backwards.)
Thanks for the comprehensive compliments! Yup, the HUD was backwards and has been previously noted and corrected. Unfortunately, I can't go back and correct the video :-P Incidentally, the earlier version of the F-16 I worked on back in the day had an avionics component known as the LPRF (Low Power Radio Frequency) in the radar system. I had to do a double take on your handle.
@@MaxAfterburner I lived through all the changes to the F-16 HUD. It's funny how it started out with basically an F-86 radar-ranging gunsight in the YF-16, then I think got its HUD with heavy influence from the A-7D HUD, which was ahead of its time. Then the Block 25 got a wider FOV HUD, followed by the LANTIRN HUD for the Block 40. My friend's dad was doing a lot of the flight testing on the LANTIRN program on a Block 15 B Model IIRC, while my dad was doing improved radar mode development for the Block 30G. This was all at Edwards AFB in the late 1980s.
For some reason, I joined the Army instead to jump out of aircraft like a dummy, so my handle is based on Long Range Surveillance, F Company, 52nd Infantry out of Fort Lewis in the late 1990s.

Max_Afterburner I did, I got AC7:SU and I’m looking forward to flying a F22 and the F35. And at a Thunder Bird Airshow they had some F-35s at base for testing as the base in right next to a civilian airport, but I got a up close view of it. (Dad was Military and we could get into the hangers as they were doing a Military family only showing for them.) it’s one thing to see pictures it another to see one in person.
Great video. Makes me want to build models again. I did have a Badger airbrush though which I loved but rarely used.
One slight nit. The HUD glass was installed backwards. You can see this at 26:51. The glass should be raked towards the pilot.

Hi, thanks! The HUD glass has been mentioned before and was corrected many moons ago, but I can't re-upload. If you watch my F-4 video, there is a retrospective near the end that includes the first 12 model projects for this channel and you can see the F-22 HUD is fixed.

What got me interested in models was the building of it. I really enjoy building model kits. My first model kit was MG Gundam Freedom. I'm wanting to go to building fighter jet model kits.

I gained a new appreciation for the F-22 by constructing this model. I heard stories they thought about doing another production run of the real F-22s. I don't know if that's going to happen though.
My first model was as your, a gob of glue and i thought it was great. LOL, it was a battleship, cant remember which one. then i pretty much did aircraft. Love the show! Thanks.

Thanks yousif! The kit comes with two sets of canopy glass. One clear and the other is tinted in smoke color. I simply used the tinted glass, no special technique here :-)
Yup! 100% agreed. The combination of unique insight, and the down to earth humility, and watching someone grow their skills (at a RIDICULOUS rate I might add!) while sharing their passion is just great! Among the best channels not just for modellers but aviation geeks like me in general. Hope that sub count skyrockets!
The water flow sound effect makes me want to pause and take a bathroom break
Recently found your channel and I love your videos. One quick thing about the F-22 -- when you see pictures of them looking 'clean' as you mentioned in the video, that's when the jet is in full stealth configuration. It'll actually look almost shrink-wrapped, as special radar-absorbent tapes and epoxies are applied around the seams and edges, hiding the rivets and panel gaps. When they look 'dirty' is when they're in a conventional configuration -- which is how these aircraft are operated almost all the time, even on combat missions, as the USAF doesn't want to give away too much info about the F-22 radar signature in a true stealth configuration until absolutely necessary.
Just thought you'd like to know, in case you want to do another model in the future of the F-22 all 'buttoned up' for stealth combat. Look up some images of them in a stealth configuration and you'll see many different details, especially around the nose.

Max, thank you for these videos and your service man! The details on the cockpit instruments are the best! Everything you said about how models were before where in a company would indicate what part you are working is all true(Companies should make those again, and the glue,(used the whole tube to assemble one model when you were you)--- you are on point on that!
My first model was the "Harrier" a 1/72 scale by Hasegawa, me and my dad built it thinking it was an actual toy. lol! I screwed it up and didn't paint nor placed decals. I used super glue all the way. lol!
Just a slight suggestion since you are out there in the real world where you are with the planes, why not create a diorama of planes and the stuff you see everyday? I really think that would be awesome!
I've thought about doing a super diorama of my F-16 flight line or a very large carrier deck display, but gosh it seems like you'd need so much time to get it done!
I'm getting back into scale modeling after years, and really enjoy your videos. Our methods are very similar.

I have a phantom in the stash that is hasegawa !! I'm like you to , the detail painting and stuff I find quite boring at times !
Thanks Motty! Actually, the detailing and painting I prefer, but it's frustrating at times when I touch something up. This usually leads to having to touch-up something else...which leads to another touch-up...

Great looking kit! Just a little heads up. Not sure if you are aware or not, but with your AIM9s, the blue bands on the missle indicate that it is an inert, non explosive missle. Mainly used for training. To have an authentic missle. The bands close to the warhead will be yellow to indicate it is a live warhead, and the band closer to the end of the missle will be brown to indicate a live rocket motor. Other than that, beautiful work!
Thanks for the compliments! I worked on the F-16 flight line for 20 years and I'm well aware of what the missile striping indicates. I noted the different types in a previous model video, but I did not repeat the information for this presentation.
Max_Afterburner I spent my enlistment all over the flight line as well. From F-16s in Kunsan to HH-60s in Kadena to A-10s at Moody. Thanks for your service brother and keep up the great art!

Pretty sure my first model was a Sopwith Camel. I don't think I ever painted it though. At 40 I still consider myself to be a beginner. I haven't really done any kit builds like this as an adult. I've mostly just done Warhammer, including painting them. I don't have an airbrush but really want one now looking at the control you can get from them in your videos.
I also appreciate the "feathered edge" method to painting. When seeing you use the templates the first time I was worried you'd get that really crisp line which I don't really like. But with the edges loose on the template and the paint misted under you get a nice soft line which I really appreciate.
Can't go wrong with an airbrush! I remember doing a Sopwith Camel too back in the day when "The Great Waldo Pepper" was in theaters.

Beautifull job Max . I have built F22 but didn't find it very interesting , looks good before undercarrage is added , but u/c always looks undersized and gives it a squashed appearance when on the ground ? Not as interesting as a Strike Eagle to build ( Same with modern tanks , stealth qualities make them look rather toy like I think , I love all the strapped on stuff .) Wales UK
