    Straightening the derailleur hanger is one of the most common "repairs" we do at our bike shop! If it's misaligned you can adjust all you want without getting it to shift smoothly.. Awesome vid explaining the basics tho!

    Also check if teeth, cogs are bent, if there is play in the chainrings, this can happen with riveted chainrings, these things can cause shifting issues, chain might struggle to get up to next cog, it cogs or teeth are bent you might be able use a flat headed screw driver to straighten the teeth and cogs, but it won't be perfect, and you will struggle to do it with the smallest cog, you don't want to mess up the frame or cause harm to your self, but the others you can do it to, but if the cogs have too much play you can't solve this, I've done that with few tens of km on Sunrace 11-50t cassette I used with 32t oval.

  • @calebgonsalves2970
    @calebgonsalves2970 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can also tighten and loosen the barrel adjuster until the pulley wheel closest to the sprockets is under the correct gear. Doesn't have to to 100% if it looks right, it is right.
    If this still causes issues then adjust no more than 2 revolutions either side. If the problem persists, clean your drivetrain and make sure your wheel is on securely.
    If that doesn't work take it to a bike shop

    This quick tutorial has proven inestimably valuable as I've had to adjust quite frequently over the last few
    Months... One other question: could incorrectly cutting chain length (say a too long chain on a hardtail) mess with the cassette to chainring tension and cause skipping issues?

    • @sydfixesbikes
      @sydfixesbikes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. It can cause other issues like not frequently dropped chains (too long) or not being able to access the easier gears (too short), but shouldn't affect the shifting. More likely, the cable and housing is worn and needs to be replaced.

  • @mtbboy1993
    @mtbboy1993 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    More things it cna be: bent rear derailleur, bent cage, worn out pivots in parellogram, it can be is stiff link in the chain. Snapped tooth on cassette, it can be too stiff old lube causing the chain to move slowly and be too stiff.
    Play in the freehub, causing the cassette to danse.
    The frame being so flexy the hanger bends during the ride.

    Question: Before adjusting the cable at the derailleur bolt, should one set the barrel adjuster to its approximate "middle" of the screw to allow for fine tuning in either direction, yea?

    • @sydfixesbikes
      @sydfixesbikes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In general, you'll need to tighten the cable over time as the cable and housing wear, so we generally set it about 1 full turn from all the way in as the starting point.
