Sung and danced by one of my all time favorites Doris Day!
From the movie Love Me Or Leave Me, a fictionalized account of the career of jazz singer Ruth Etting and her tempestuous marriage to gangster Marty Snyder, who helped propel her to stardom.

We will never see an era like this again. It was the post WWII boom when America was full of optimism, energy and unparalleled talent. Also, Americans were in love with the big screen musical. From 1949 to the early 60s some of the greatest film productions were created that set a standard that will absolutely never be topped. Just as the classic cars from that time are works of art that can sell for millions of dollars, so these films are priceless.

Doris Day in the mid 1950’s was in her prime both as a singer and as an actress! The phrasing of her songs and the richness of her voice during this time was absolutely outstanding! Coupled with her dancing and acting skills - what a dynamic performer!

This was from the great film, Love Me or Leave Me (1955). The screenplay was by my wonderful stepmother, Isobel Lennart. She went on to write Funny Girl, both the Broadway play and the movie. Doris Day was one of the greats, as was Isoblel.

      @jbharding 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

@@richardlee8495 My father was a very handsome, refined man, but, unfortunately, he did not play Ziegfeld on the stage, ever. In Love Me or Leave Me, he played Greg Trent, a Ziegfeld-type character. Dad said that in one scene Cagney manhandled him - sort of. Similar to Hitchcock appearing about all of his films, Dad was in quite a few Isobel Lennart films. She was not a bad connection for dear old Dad to have. Eons ago, back in the early fifties, Dad, decided to retry his earlier effort at being an actor, but he ran into a roadblock - the name, "John Harding" had already been taken. Back in the days only one actor could have a name. There was another John Harding! Driving back home to Malibu, Dad told me what had happened. "Too bad," I said. Whereupon, Dad, said that he had checked the other John Harding out - and that John Harding had the exact same home address as we did. Yes! I was the other John Harding! I had recently made a commercial for Coca Cola, and, for that, I got registered as "John Harding." As we drove on, Dad looked at me and asked that I release the name to him. "Well, I guess..." I said. Dad gave me a stern look and said, "You would like to keep your weekly five dollar allowance, wouldn't you?" So that is how Dad got his name back. Now, there are many John Hardings in IMDB, not just Dad and me. A bit of move history...

When Doris was a young girl, she was a wonderful dancer, but at the age of 15, she was in a terrible accident where a train smashed into a car she riding in. Her right leg was crushed and broken, which ended her dreams of a dancing career, so she decided to study singing. Still, as you can see, her dancing talent never quite left her, and without that early tragedy, we might never have had the pleasure of hearing her unique singing voice.

However, I have noticed that from 1949 to 1965 was a virtual Golden Age of creativity and excellence. Then the unraveling began. Many commentators have noted the negative effects of the Sexual Revolution with the advent of the "Pill" followed by no-fault divorce and so forth. The more I have examined this insight the more credence it seems to have.

This is musical star, Doris Day in a great dramatic turn, portraying the true life-story of Ruth Ething. Who said musical stars can't be great dramatic actors? Doris proved her acting range with a gamut of emotions in this film as well as other dramatic turns in Storm Warning, Julie, The man who knew too much and The Midnight Lace. She sang, danced and acted up a storm in dozens of movies beginning with the super-hit of all times "Romance on the high seas" and she never looked back. Ms. Day was a super-star of her time as well as Hollywood Royalty!

Always extra satisfying to see a performer grow before your eyes. Doris began as a band singer, became a soloist and a charming presence in light musicals, and now gets her teeth into dramatic meat after moving from Warners to MGM. And she hoofs adequately too, if supported a lot by the chorus. Not quite a triple threat at the nonpareil level of Ginger Rogers, but the closest anyone came after WW2.
An additional pleasure is knowing that an actress depicting a singer is not being dubbed by Marni Nixon- as Ava Gardner or Jane Russell, previously considered for the role, would have been. Ruth Etting had wanted Jane Powell, who like Day yearned to play a bad girl. I doubt Powell would have stood up to Cagney as Doris does. She was her own woman, as her later career showed.
This routine is choreographed by the young Alex Romero, who went on to create another such for a singer turned dancer: 'Jailhouse Rock' with Elvis (who stole the credit). Like Ann Miller's version in 'Easter Parade', the song and dance have nothing to do with the periods- pre- and post-WW1- in which the films were set, but who's complaining?

😄 Woke up with this song in my head. Love DD. She has the sexiest voice talking and singing. She had hoped to be a dancer but broke her leg and that started her singing. Can you imagine she's so talented she just switched. Wonderful human. Irreplaceable. Love you Doris ❤❤❤

Definitely a different side of Doris Day than anyone from my generation would remember. She was the girl next door but in this film as sultry siren Ruth Etting she shows her range as an actress and performer playing next to the great and wonderful James Cagney. "Love me or leave me" is one of so many classic films unseen by today's world but it's theme and topical message rings true in any place or time check it out

you know , i just love all this, but it takes a night of too much drinking in a bar to get to this mellow state. and i thank you, once again, for responding in such detail. for me, Love Me or Leave Me will always remain one of the four or five best MGM musicals. The Bandwagon will always be my favorite, though.

“Shakin’ The Blues Away” has always been an all-time favorite songs of mine. If we could only have Doris Day singing it like she did in “Love Me or Leave Me” 1955... With Ann Miller tap dancing to it like she did in Easter Parade 1948!
Although Doris Day was a singer who could dance, the same has to be said about Ann Miller who was a dancer who could sing. Both women came from a time when an actor had to be a “triple threat”... Meaning they could Act, Sing and Dance! The majority of actors of the last 40 years can’t say that! That’s when Hollywood was truly golden!
PS Anyone who reading this, do yourself a favor and search for Ann Miller’s dance number to “Shakin’ the Blues Away” from the movie Easter Parade. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

@ John Harding, I want to tell you I’ve been catching up on your comments. What a wonderful time of your life, it must have been. This really was a great movie of Doris Day portrayal of Ruth Etting. I made it my goal to never miss any film she played in, especially musicals. I was fortunate enough for many to tell me I looked a lot like Doris Day in my younger years. Perhaps they were being kind because everyone knew how much I loved her . LOL. Your stepmom must have been a great screen writer. I’ve seen all of the movies you mentioned now I’m going to wait for a rerun so I can see your dad. Thanks so much for sharing your story. Lou
