Down: Philip Anselmo, Jimmy Bower Look Back on 'NOLA,' Early Days, Favorite Songs

  • Last year, Down's crucial debut LP, 'NOLA,' turned 25, an anniversary that the band didn't get to celebrate properly due to the pandemic, which threw off the sludge supergroup's live plans. However, the band - featuring Pantera's Philip Anselmo, Corrosion of Conformity's Pepper Keenan, Crowbar's Kirk Windstein and Eyehategod's Jimmy Bower - did reunite in 2020 to play a livestream show, dubbed the "Quarter Century Throwdown," an event they followed up this year with July's "NOLA Town Throwdown" virtual concert. Ahead of the group's long-awaited return to in-person performance, at Psycho Las Vegas 2021, REVOLVER talked to Anselmo and Bower to get a look back at Down's origins, word-of-mouth hype and, of course, the making and legacy of 'NOLA.'

      @@ronaldclayton8347 Down II had great songs but the production was way too polished compared to the perfect 'jam room style' recording of Nola. Both my brother and I agree that Nola is a perfect album start to finish (we bought it when it the summer of 1996). Matt Brown (guitarist of Crowbar at the time) did such an awesome job with Nola...even when the studio got completely flooded!! We are so lucky the master tapes for Nola didn't get ruined. Matt Brown also helped record Crowbar 'Time Heals Nothing' (1995)...another personal favorite album of mine!!

      Standing outside waiting for the Hordern Pavillion in Sydney to open up to see Pantera in May of 2001. I wasn't even of drinking age and I remember some outside talking and asking about Down like a hidden treasure. A rumour started amongst punters that maybe Down would perform as Corrosion of Conformity were supporting but it wasn't to be that night. I was one of the few lucky enough to have a mate who had a totally thrashed copy of Nola on cd (a huge fuckin deal back then) and I borrowed that copy off him for over 20 years and eventually returned it to him as I held it to be a sacred record.

      @@Indymetal89 To add to it, I'm not one of those people who's going to say that Vinyl is the only way to listen to music, but there's something about putting that needle down and walking away from it. Holding the sleeve in your hands and looking at the artwork. You're less likely to get up to skip any tracks, and you're more likely to hear the album flow as it was intended. I do love having all this music on my phone, but sitting down with an album going is a different experience.

      Down is a completely different sounding band from the 4 different other bands the guys are in. Why try to compare them?

    • @RunwiththePack83
      @RunwiththePack83 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@butchvito Because as humans, making comparisons is inevitable, although I actually wasnt comparing the bands themselves at all. Personally, I enjoy the other bands these guys are in, but for me, this is the pinnacle that any of them have achieved via a released album. I couldn't care less if someone's opinion is in-line with mine or different. Differing opinions make things interesting. Like what you like.

    I remember coming home from a vacation to Lake Havasu with my family, and that night I discovered Gojira and Down. Both the albums From Mars to Sirius and NOLA just blew my fucking mind (still do) and they developed a whole new sound for me to pursue. Owning both of these albums on vinyl is a joy beyond words.

    I can remember reading a blurb/note about a Phil Anselmo side-project (which ended up being Down) in either RIP or Metal Maniacs. In that same blurb/note, it also mentioned another project he was involved with that included Ted Parsons (Prong) on Bass, but nothing ever materialized from it.
