  • What kind of hotel will $140/night get you in Central Tokyo? It will get you this super tiny hotel room at Hotel Hatago in the Asakusa district of Tokyo. I'll show you around one of their Twin Rooms, which actually one of their bigger rooms at 14 square meters. The Single Room is just 9 square meters! We enjoyed our stay... but one night in this room was probably enough for us!

I love Asakusa, it’s like 1950’s Japan. Lots of shopping streets and food. Ryokan Kamogawa is very good if you can get a room with a private bath and you can schedule a private onset bath.

I stayed in The Richmond hotel in Asakusa for a week back in the fall of 2016 and I thought it was a nice sized room. Then again, I don't need much space. During my stay I really only used the room to sleep because I was too busy trying to explore the massive city of Tokyo.
But one night, I fell asleep with my glasses still on and broke them. I spent half the day blindly wandering Asakusa looking for the glasses shop. When I finally found it, I asked the man if he could fix them and he just responded with "...Impossible". So I checked out the glasses, which were mostly unisex and not my kinda style, and when I saw a pair I thought I might be able to settle with he told me they were about $400 USD. I took the walk of shame out of the shop.
I spent the rest of the day in my little hotel room, watching "Last Action Hero" in Japanese and doing laundry, wondering what I was going to do about my broken glasses. Then it dawned on me. Super glue.
So I walked down the block to Don Quijote, the greatest store in the world, and went to the hardware section. I was checking out all the super glue to see what might be the strongest, and there it was. A black label with a lightning bolt. That HAS to be the one to do the job, right? I approached a young lady who was stocking shelves and like an idiot, I said "Sumimasen... Strong?" Pointing to the glue, flexing my bicep 💪. She said "Ah... Hai! Strongu!" as she also flexed her bicep.
That glue saved my trip. And those glasses lasted another 3 years. I had to re-glue them multiple times with that black label lightning bolt glue every time I would fall asleep with them on, but I definitely got my money's worth.
The moral of the story is... Uh... Asakusa hotels are nice.

This is the hotel I stayed in. The picture I saw on the web looked like yours. I got a one bed for me and my wife so you can imagine how small it was. Was clean though and came with breakfast.

  • @scottman895

That hotel room is quite small! Luckily I'm only 5'8", so the shower would not be too much of a problem. Watching this brings back flashbacks for when I stayed at a hotel in Amsterdam (it was even smaller than this one) where the bedroom was very tiny. The small desk area could only be accessed by sitting on the twin bed! I agree that it only looks like a 1-night hotel (at least for me). I do like how it is located close to a metro station and some attractions. Great review!

Not that this is a contest, but I think I have you beat on small hotel rooms in Tokyo. lol
In 2013 stayed at Hotel Kuramae close to the Kuramae Station, just one stop from Asakusa. The rooms were tiny, but they were so affordable that each of us were able to get our own room. Oh! This is a fun little fact. Since I stayed there, the hotel was bought by OYO, the same that bought the Hooters Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
This was the last hotel I would stay in during my Tokyo trips before moving unto AirBnB. I still stay in hotels in Narita as I make Narita part of my experience and spend at least an entire day there when arriving and some times before heading back home. My Hotel of choice in Narita is Narita U-City Hotel. It's right by the station, great price and overall confy to stay in.

Yellow Productions yes it was. The big boy took one of the singles. I slept on a chair next to the half opened window. It was autumn, so it was nice and cool. Awkward position, no easy way around it.
Interesting fact. This was in 2009. Now when I sleep anywhere in Japan in autumn, I choose the bed next to the window. Yes, half opened. That's MY Japan.
