For anyone asking about Planet Of The Dead, Britany posted a community post a couple weeks ago saying she's had trouble getting it past copyright stuff.
That's what this episode was for. This and Turn Left both showed just how much The Doctor relies on his companions to keep him straight, and that the big difference between him and other time lords is the company he keeps.
Another nice little touch to highlight the Doctor has lost it, is throughout this era it has been made clear that the Doctor has saved us so many times and has never asked for thanks. The first thing he says after landing back on Earth is “Isn’t anyone going to thank me?”
Back in the Runaway Bride Christmas special: Donna: Just promise me one thing, find someone. The Doctor: I don't need anyone. Donna: Yes you do. Because sometimes... I think you need someone to stop you.
"...I thought I was just a survivor but i'm not. I'm the winner.". Chills every time. I doubt any of us expected that in an episode with such a well realised monster, _the Doctor_ would be the scariest part. But here we are :). The masterful touch for me is, at the _start_ we're all aboard right? _We_ feel triumphant too, we feel the allure of finally letting go of all those rules. And then in a split second, mostly due to Tennant, it turns into something deeply sinister. Just brilliant TV IMO.
The thing is, 'little people' was probably the 10th Doctor letting his charming, personable mask slip. As charming and personable as he was, and as much as he genuinely cared, he always did kind of look down on ordinary people.
That's what I love about 11. 10 says to Donna, "you're not important" but 11 says to a scrooge-like character in a Christmas episode, "900 years of time and space and I've never met anyone who wasn't important"
Okay, since I didn't see any note about it, I'll mention that the language the Doctor speaks that the Flood zombies seem to recognize I believe is meant to be the language of the Ice Warriors (and I think he alludes to them when looking at the glacier too)
19:34 This is a wake-up call that the Doctor has had this power the whole time. He has chosen not to use it, until now. This is a major policy change and only while not having a human companion. This also questions if he's ever done this before, and why not for Rose, River Song, Lady Pompadour, and all his favorite humans and aliens? ✌️😸
This, Midnight and Dalek are my favorite type of episodes. Episodes you might only get one of per season, but that really dig into the Doctor, their world and what their limitations are. Not exactly a typical episode, but some of the most facinating places the show can go.
Shoutout to Cpt. Adelaide Brook for doing a companion's essential job, to stop the Doctor at all costs when he is in the wrong. She made the ultimate sacrifice to do so.

Blink was #2 of all time. Imagine how high this one would have ranked if it had made it into the 200 list…
I want to give credit to how excellent the character writing in this episode was. The characters are made so compelling, Yuris little monologue about his family is one of my favourite scenes.
Every time I watch this episode the part that hits me the hardest is watching Tennant's face as he's walking away from the base while everything's falling apart.
The behind the scenes confidential episode for this is terrific. They show how they create the creatures and explain that they had to make them less scary...
I remember talking to the people behind the prosthetic in this episode, the actors had 2 small flexible pipes running from the top of their mouth, over their cheekbones and down the back which then connected to a hose that someone controlled just out of shot. They then had the cracked mouth prosthetic put over top, this mixed with the actors taking a mouth full of water for the closeups. I remember that they had to use cold water to prevent the skin from being crumpled, when recording in winter months wasn't very comfortable for them haha
Waters of Mars is so brilliant. Really one of the most terrifying episodes, imo, because you've spent so long on this journey with the Doctor and learning from him and believing in him, and you have to watch helplessly as he starts to snap and break every rule and lose all the things that make him the hero-- and in such a way that is *tragic,* because his motivation is to *save* these people... but the way he goes about it is all wrong, the way he talks about it all sounds so wrong coming from him rather than a character like the Master. And the music, David's performance, the side characters' reactions to him, it all makes you feel such *horror* at what he's become... The best part is, this wasn't a sudden switch. The Doctor has been teetering on this edge for a *long* time, and it's all been hinted at with the Tenth Doctor in particular since as far back as School Reunion. It's beautifully crafted storytelling.
This may be my favourite episode of all time. Tucked away in that special series. Very underrated - but later created a whole alternate universe - but that aside - the best single episode imo of doctor who.
A lot of familiar and recognisable faces in this episode, Gemma Chan is now big in Hollywood, Maggie's actor plays Liet Kynes in Dune: Part One and the crews doctor has his 2nd Dr Who role as he was in the laser tag episode of Sarah Jane Adventures.
This was the last episode Directed by Graeme Harper, who is the only Director to have helmed stories from both Classic and New Who. I met him once at a Starburst convention - very talented man with bundles of energy.
This episode is always so heartbreaking... you feel the Doctors pain and want to save them, but you also see how off the rails he's gone and that he needs to have some sense knocked back into his head.
Tennant absolutely crushes it this episode. Probably the best piece of acting in the entire series as a whole imo. Also a terrifying portrayal of The Doctor starting to lose his grip and why he needs someone to ground him.
That’s before the war, now he’s the doctor with PTSD. Travelling with Rose, Martha & Donna allowed him to experience the wonders of the universe again and probably kept him from thinking about everything he lost for a while. But by isolating himself all he has left is the memories of what he lost & how helpless he was to save Gallifrey so this was the straw the broke him

What I love about this episode is how dark it is. I remember that usually Doctor Who would be on TV around 6pm, but this one was shown a little later as it was seen as too scary for kids. But as for how they did the water effect, they basically built a prosthetic mouth peice around the actual mouth and has a small hose go through it that was pouring out water. But this is one of my favourite episodes, I agree that it makes you care about the supporting characters which is impressive since you are pretty much certain they will die.
I was so looking forward to this reaction. This is the first episode that released after I was born and because I grew up with Tennant I cannot express how much the flood scarred me. Took me years to watch with my eyes open. But what a phenomenal episode
Andy played by Alan ruscoe is a regular monster actor at this point in who started as the lead auton in rose countless others but first and only time his face appears!
Absolute perfection. One of my favourite episodes of ANY show ever. Tennant’s performance is the best he ever puts in and it is near matched by Lindsay Duncan in what is one of the best performances by a guest actor ever. The writing is so unexpected and makes such interesting choices that takes you somewhere you’ve never expected to go in Doctor Who.
All the way back to the Meddling Monk in 1965 the Time Lords have shown the potential to be the most dangerous villains - trouble later personified in the Master
One of the things I like about this episode that I think goes unspoken about a lot is how after the Doctor's, "I've done this sort of thing before, saved some little people," it's those "little people" (Mia and Yuri) who are the ones that end up surviving. And I imagine their telling of their story was probably one of the biggest factors that influenced Adelaide's daughter to go into the stars in this timeline, meaning they actually ended up being much more "important" (by his definition) than he gave them credit for.
My honest to go favourite episode, we see what happens to The Doctor when he's on his own for more than he should be, after all he's lost and all he continues to lose he finally decides that enough is enough. If the universe wants to fuck with me then i'll fuck with it back.
If you were told that you would die right after holding a baby in the middle of a rainstorm, and you were in danger in the middle of the desert. You could assume that you couldn't die because there is no baby/rainstorm combination possible. It could give you the confidence to do whatever you needed to do in that situation. At this point the Doctor has become paranoid about a male knocking four times, because that's what he was told.
I'm sure someone has answered this for you already, but to respond to your confusion about the Ood, it's a reference from the episode "Planet Of The Ood" and the conversation between The Doctor and Ood Sigma (who makes his appearance here) at the end. Ood Sigma: We thank you, Doctor Donna. Friends of Oodkind. And what of you now? Will you stay? There is room in the song for you. The Doctor: Oh, I’ve… sort of got a song of my own, thanks. This is probably my favorite episode. I was like you, worried and stressed throughout. I thought he was so scary like a mad scientist with the fire behind him. Some people cheer him on, but not me. Absolutely brilliant casting for Captain Adelaide Brooke. Lindsay Duncan was wonderful. I just wish they had followed through with the Time Lord Victorious for a few episodes.
Right, there are two people in the world that shouldn't be. I always wished they would do more to show how the Doctor changed things. Just little things. Like in Back to the Future, Twin Pines Mall becomes Lone Pine. No attention is drawn to it; it just is. They rarely do that in this show.
Always thought it was a good episode but never a big fan of The Waters of MARS ... untill I watched your reaction to it. You went through so much emotions and I could feel them all and now this episode will never be the same (in a good way).
I don't mean this to sound sarcastic. It's a genuine question ... would the Daleks care about her being part of a fixed point in time? It seems like they would care if their actions created chaos, especially for the human race.

Basically, the Daleks wouldn't care if it caused chaos for humans, but they would care if it caused negative effects for themselves, and fixed points are fixed for a reason. It's too risky to bother messing around with them. Remember when Rose saved her father from getting run over and reality started falling apart?
You had the best reaction to the Timelord Victorious and really realized that he was falling apart when he was trying to save everyone. Some people cheer him along but you see him as completely losing it. Buckle up . . .
Random fact I learned from the book version of the Martian, the plot point about filters not fitting is something that real life NASA has already been confronted with when it comes to their shuttles. So now every NASA system that needs a filter has a standardised size and fitting, so any filter will fit any system.

Adelaide knew that he was wrong, that's why she took action into her own hands. Her killing herself made him realise he had gone too far and that's heartbreaking.

Totally agree with you in that this was a really good episode but it was very disturbing. I was...unsettled for quite some time after watching it, but I give it props for being very effective at creeping me out.

I actually refer to 12 as the dark Doctor. 9 is PTSD Doctor, 10 is Angry Doctor, 11 is Kid Doctor, and 12 is Dark Doctor. I don't have nicknames for 13-15 yet as they mostly come how I think of them when I reflect back on their era's and not enough time has really passed yet for that.
My favourite 10th doctor story I loved The Flood as villains (water zombies) and the doctor acting like a villian near the end of the story showing his darkness one of the best episodes of doctor who imo. Also did I miss planet of the dead? It’s not the best episode tbf but it contributes to the 10th doctors story ending arc

Watching as a kid, back in 2009 was weird, like kid me realising i'd be in my late 50s when the story was set Interesting parallels with Fires Of Pompeii & this: fire vs water; Doctor not wanting to save anyone/keeping history on track vs Doctor saving people; history being fine when he saves Caecillius' family vs history going wrong (it got better later) when he saved Adelaide. The Doctor becoming the Timelord Victorious was explored in more detail as a multimedia event in 2020, as an honoury "15 years of Revival Who special event". The main part of event (across books, comics, audios, an escape room & a immersive theatre experience) saw time fracturing due to the Doctor saving Adelaide, the Doctor going up against alien grim reapers & committing genocide against said alien grim reapers, and getting a reality check from Eccleston Doctor & McGann Doctor afterwards.
I don't know if you're still confused on the end BUT the reason time didn't change much was because Adelaide killed herself to preserve the timeline. If she had lived, time would've fallen apart or something like that. AND because of what The Doctor did, it caused a crack to open in time, which the TARDIS used to take The Doctor back in time to the Dark Times of the universe to teach him a lesson. But instead he tried to defeat death itself, or at least the idea of death called the Kotturuh, commanding a fleet to destroy their planet. Which got so bad the Eight AND Ninth Doctor were brought in to try and stop him. There's way more to the story, plus i haven't listened to the audio of it so some details might be wrong. But yeah, he went power mad for a while.

Yeah, I was scared of the monster, but I was chilled and disturbed by 10. That's definitely an accomplishment.

Lindsay Duncan was great in this! The Doctor doesn't do 'alone' very well, he needs a friend to act as his 'control' or limiter.

By far my favourite episode, the whole part from 13:15 to the end is a demonstration of what Doctor Who is capable.

This is probably my favorite episode. I was like you, worried and stressed throughout. I thought he was so scary like a mad scientist with the fire behind him. Some people cheer him on, but not me. Absolutely brilliant casting for Captain Adelaide Brooke. Lindsay Duncan was wonderful. I just wish they had followed through with the Time Lord Victorious for a few episodes.

Right, there are two people in the world that shouldn't be. I always wished they would do more to show how the Doctor changed things. Just little things. Like in Back to the Future, Twin Pines Mall becomes Lone Pine. No attention is drawn to it; it just is. They rarely do that in this show.
With everything else that happened in this episode, I just honestly forgot about them.

Always thought it was a good episode but never a big fan of The Waters of MARS ... untill I watched your reaction to it. You went through so much emotions and I could feel them all and now this episode will never be the same (in a good way).

One theory I saw as to why the Dalek let her go was that it also knew how important she was to time, that she was a fixed point
I don't mean this to sound sarcastic. It's a genuine question ... would the Daleks care about her being part of a fixed point in time? It seems like they would care if their actions created chaos, especially for the human race.
@@BritanyBinges Sorry to get back to this so late. Basically, the Daleks wouldn't care if it caused chaos for humans, but they would care if it caused negative effects for themselves, and fixed points are fixed for a reason. It's too risky to bother messing around with them.

You had the best reaction to the Timelord Victorious and really realized that he was falling apart when he was trying to save everyone. Some people cheer him along but you see him as completely losing it. Buckle up . . .
Yeah, it was very clearly not a good thing. I didn't know how bad it was going to be, but I knew it was going to be bad. lol
Gadget speeding with flames is my favorite scene in this episode.
Random fact I learned from the book version of the Martian, the plot point about filters not fitting is something that real life NASA has already been confronted with when it comes to their shuttles. So now every NASA system that needs a filter has a standardised size and fitting, so any filter will fit any system.
DOCTOR: For a long time now, I thought I was just a survivor, but I'm not. I'm the winner. That's who I am. The Time Lord Victorious.
ADELAIDE: And there's no one to stop you.
DOCTOR: No.
ADELAIDE: This is wrong, Doctor. I don't care who you are. The Time Lord Victorious is wrong.
DOCTOR: That's for me to decide. Now, you'd better get home. Oh, it's all locked up. You've been away. Still, that's easy.
DOCTOR: All yours.
ADELAIDE: Is there nothing you can't do?
DOCTOR: Not any more.
Still gives me chills. The water monsters were scary but What's even scarier is The Doctor behaving like this. He's like going against his own rules and thinks he can do anything.
The worst part about his actions and behaviour, is that he got someone killed. He's The Doctor, the man who saves people. Adelaide knew that he was wrong, that's why she took action into her own hands. Her killing herself made him realise he had gone too far and that's heartbreaking.
i just watched the titanic in space episode and noticed a foreshadowing to the timelord victorious....
at the end of that episode.

I did remember seeing this on the ABC Australia way back and the Flood was creepy & scary upon seeing them for the first time and yeah there was a notable cast in this one. Shame that Doctor Who doesn't air on the ABC anymore after many decades on it, thanks Disney ugh.

Totally agree with you in that this was a really good episode but it was very disturbing. I was...unsettled for quite some time after watching it, but I give it props for being very effective at creeping me out.
Shame you couldn't get Planet of the Dead past the copyright gremlins - but other than Malcolm that's not a huge loss. Hope you more or less enjoyed it.

I actually refer to 12 as the dark Doctor. 9 is PTSD Doctor, 10 is Angry Doctor, 11 is Kid Doctor, and 12 is Dark Doctor. I don't have nicknames for 13-15 yet as they mostly come how I think of them when I reflect back on their era's and not enough time has really passed yet for that.

My favourite 10th doctor story I loved The Flood as villains (water zombies) and the doctor acting like a villian near the end of the story showing his darkness one of the best episodes of doctor who imo. Also did I miss planet of the dead? It’s not the best episode tbf but it contributes to the 10th doctors story ending arc

Watching as a kid, back in 2009 was weird, like kid me realising i'd be in my late 50s when the story was set
Interesting parallels with Fires Of Pompeii & this:
fire vs water; Doctor not wanting to save anyone/keeping history on track vs Doctor saving people; history being fine when he saves Caecillius' family vs history going wrong (it got better later) when he saved Adelaide.
The Doctor becoming the Timelord Victorious was explored in more detail as a multimedia event in 2020, as an honoury "15 years of Revival Who special event". The main part of event (across books, comics, audios, an escape room & a immersive theatre experience) saw time fracturing due to the Doctor saving Adelaide, the Doctor going up against alien grim reapers & committing genocide against said alien grim reapers, and getting a reality check from Eccleston Doctor & McGann Doctor afterwards.
I don't know if you're still confused on the end BUT the reason time didn't change much was because Adelaide killed herself to preserve the timeline. If she had lived, time would've fallen apart or something like that.
AND because of what The Doctor did, it caused a crack to open in time, which the TARDIS used to take The Doctor back in time to the Dark Times of the universe to teach him a lesson. But instead he tried to defeat death itself, or at least the idea of death called the Kotturuh, commanding a fleet to destroy their planet. Which got so bad the Eight AND Ninth Doctor were brought in to try and stop him.
There's way more to the story, plus i haven't listened to the audio of it so some details might be wrong. But yeah, he went power mad for a while.
