    The other benefit to augers is the appeal it has to non-gardeners, such as my husband and my father-in-law. They saw me putting the auger on the drill and were like "what's that?" And then the two of them proceeded to follow me around the yard and take turns using the auger, discussing it as though I wasn't even there. It was awesome. I just pointed to spots and one of them would auger the hole, taking turns and talking about optimum angle and pressure, etc. I got 15 plants put in in less than 1/2 the time. It was also fun to have them there to chat with, and they became much more aware and interested in what plants I was putting where, and why. Augers - they're not just for planting. :)

      sounds very suspicious to me, it seems like they made so called "bio degradable plastic" by another name. and there's no such thing as biodegradable plastic, as to justify that name, there needs to be a microorganism, bacterium or fungi that eats that sort of plastic.. no microorganism on the planet, eats plastics as of now. and if any microorganism can develop such skill, it would be fungi, just not yet. so what actually happens with so-called biodegradable plastic, is that it physically degrades into what is known as microplastics, and then stays in the ground and water forever, entering our systems as well. the industry has ton of products that they call "not plastics" that are just some different kinds of polymers to polymers we commonly know as plastics, but they have the same problems, no living thing eats those artificial polymers. and she did say this was some polymer based of corn, so, plastic by another name

      @@mimosveta I read this on their faq page 'The Proven Winners Seed-Starter Eco-Pots are a compostable garden pot, made out of PLA (polylactic acid). PLA is made from starchy renewable plants like corn, switch grass, and sugar beets' From what they say it seems to be made of organic matierials.. Of course im no scientist so idk how much better it actually is for the environment

    • @libertyjayne
      @libertyjayne 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Most garden centers I’ve checked with so far in my area say they mostly recycle (which is a broken system) instead of re-use or give to nurseries to re-use. They’ll only accept certain colors (black) sometimes to re-use. Some get re-used, but not all. One garden center said their nurseries won’t disinfect because it’s cheaper to buy new. It’s a big problem! Our world has too much plastic that ends up in oceans. Why not just disinfect them rather than buy new. I’m still calling other nurseries and garden centers to find out about their policies so I can support and encourage more re-using of pots.

    • @appyfied
      @appyfied 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I re-use all of them. So, whenever I have smaller plants, I use the plastic containers from previous nursery visits and then if they are too small, I use them as seed starting pots and I grow everything from seeds but not in bulk because of lack of space, so I know I can use 1 or 2 plastic containers for herb seeds or cherry tomatoes etc etc

    It will be interesting to see how fast they break down. I usually tear off the peat pots just because I feel like the roots don't need anything to fight thorough, although they supposedly can get through . . . Then I save those and use them for pieces over drainage holes in clay pots.

    I'm also a bit skeptical that those will break down. I mean here in the Midwest were not super wet climate but not dry either but, those other peat degradable pots don't really break down here either I mean they do enough for the plants to grow put I've found they still do restrict root growth, compared to taking them off the plant. (I've pulled plants out at the end of the season and the pot is still mostly intact)

Last year I planted one 4 inch pot in each of my 16 inch planters of bubblegum vista and it filled out beautifully. At the end of summer I cut it back because I let it dry out in our hot summer and it came back and looks beautiful. Even with some light freezes. Love it.

    Good news! I’d probably still reuse these though 😅 unless they were literally disintegrating already, which I doubt they would be. Thankfully we have a local garden center that accepts and reuses plastic pots. Everyone should check their local shops! We try to reuse everything if possible, it hurts my heart otherwise and makes it hard to focus on beautifying my little patch of earth 💚🌱 Also, some grocery stores have an outside bin to collect various types of plastic bags and packaging materials that is then supposedly turned into composite decking. I always have bags of plastic hanging around ready for my next shopping trip 👍 (bulb bags go here)

    Hi Laura and Aaron! I'm very excited to see how the biodegradable pots work out. I always peel off the peat pots when I transplant because they tend to still be in the soil when I pull the plants at the end of the season. If they work as they should, I will definitely look into them for next year. Those augers are awesome! Thank you so much for sharing!

    I love these pots! I always have problem with way too many plastic pots and haven't found any place that recycles them. Nice!

    Oh my goodness I just checked Proven Winners and they ship those seed starting ECO pots to Canada!!! So exciting!!! Thanks so much for introducing this new and innovative way of starting seeds :)

    I had the same problem in Phoenix AZ with the peat pots not breaking down. I started taking off the bottom of the pot so the plant could still send down roots.

    Go on PW!!!
    I wish we could get these here as I try so hard to avoid plastic but it's just everywhere!
    Not only that the fact it feeds your plants to is amazing

    This was the first season I looked specifically for PW annuals that you recommended and I have to say I’ve never had annuals last so long into the fall! The company has always been generous donating plants to our Master Gardener conferences in Michigan. And they are great responding to questions on their Facebook page and website. You and PW make a great team 😊

    THANK YOU FOR SHARING IT WITH US. I wish I could find an auger that would go through my very rocky riverbed dirt!!!! So close to baby girl arriving, how are you feeling Laura? Also how is Aaron and Benjamin doing? I know we're all so excited for you guys. Take care and God bless you.

    Thank you Laura and Aaron, I love my Felco's and sent my brother a pair for his birthday and he is very happy with them. I haven't tried planting seeds yet but you have "planted that seed thought for me and for many of your viewers". Thank you!

    Very interesting idea about the pots. I hope that our garden center will carry them so I can check it out. BTW: I don't usually toss out the pots, but use them to starting seeds. I have 3 trays of white PW tall small pots and they are so sturdy that I probably had 5-6 rounds of seedlings in them.

    WOW! game changer!! i love this, and thank you Proven Winners for this!! it will be interesting to see how this affects the industry towards changing over to a more environmentally friendly method of raising plants it is hard to get rid of those plastic pots - i save quite a few for various reasons, but mostly, yup, into the garbage they go, sigh... some of the nurseries here used to take them back but they've stopped - i heard it's because they have no way to sterilize the pots - too labor intensive, etc... i'll keep an eye out for these though... and those flower pillows from PW??? granted, i live in a very warm climate here in southern California, but i have a pillow pack in a hanging basket that's going on year number THREE yup... it winters over beautifully, i cut it way back, and just feed it and water it and here we go, it's third year!!! (i also add more soil, etc)... so easy to plant and just a beautiful hanging basket... so look at you two... all cozy and warm in your fabulous studio while the weather outside is "yucky" i love it!! thanks for the video!!

    I saw the seeds on the website yesterday. I hope you make more videos on the whole seed process and updates on these. Last year was my first year growing cucumbers and this year I’m starting to plant more food this year. I am a little nervous lol but we’re most excited on the strawberries. I ordered the strawberry seeds, pillow and one plant.

    I would have liked to seen how you take the tabs off, how long it takes for the "pot" to break down. A lot of fun things coming this year with PW, I so wish we could get more in my area. I did read some of the comments and so many people are NEGATIVE NANCY. You have to start somewhere to make change. Thanks for sharing!

    I was wondering why some of the little peat pots I've bought don't break down like they're supposed to ... Living in a dry climate, now that makes sense! It will be interesting to see if these new ones will break down in Laura's dry climate. Great info, thank you 💚

    Those are interesting pots. I do find that many of these products made to decompose over a season don’t do that here either. We have a short, dry season on the Canadian prairies (less than 7 inches of precipitation -snow and rain- through all of 2020 in my area)

    Oh that is such a fantastic idea and undertaking from Proven Winners. In Australia I only see their pots occasionally but more and more (and every time I smile and think of you guys) but feel comfortable in knowing they are quality stock!
    I be eagerly looking for these new environmental enhancer grow pots. Thanks for sharing... & can’t wait to justify buying an auger 😜
