Fredag den 25 december 2020. Juldagen. Merry christmas! Hello Marshall ! Isn't there a row of cogs between the rails. That is probably needed to pull the ships all the way. I dont know the english word for cogbar? A bar with cogs. "Kuggstång" in swedish. Additionally the tracks need to be designed so the ships dont pull the locomotives down into the lock. Tomas. Före detta skeppare på s/y Ofelia och Pappa till ”Fallet Axel, 29 år!" på (Gidlöf.se or Tomasgidlof.se )
I went through the Canal decades ago. At that time the "Mules" appeared to have been built by GE. The new Canal locks use tugboats rather than the "mules" to shepherd the ships through.
When my wife and I went through the Canal a few years back it was my understanding the ship uses own power to move, the mules only keep the ship in place not hit the sides of the locks gates or walls of the canal.
I was watching a cruise ship captain talking about the differences between the new bigger lane and the older ones. He said on the lanes with the locomotives you had to turn your engines off. Don't know if that is true but that's what he said.
Thanks for sharing this. I love that they pick up electricity from the track just like model trains. The National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis has one of the original GE locos from the canal. This is the first electric cog railway I have ever seen. I assume there is a cog that locks into those notches in the middle when it climbs and descends those massive hills. For such an impressive set up it is hard to find info on .
I have done this transit a couple of times in my life . If I am not wrong you must be sitting at the St paderos lock gate galleria. Panama have hot sunny day suddenly turning to heavy rain and thunder..
they are NOT towing the ships, but funktion as brakes and hold the ships in the middle. just look crefully at the clip and you see the ship is going at owm power. see the watermovement from the shis propellor.
Hay una cremallera para lograr la adherencia,,sino seria imposible con esta pendiente.Estas locomotoras tienen una enorme fuerza de traccion,,no importa la velocidad,,,Si el torque.
Traction comes from the geared track ..or it would got wheel slip climbing up or towing weight ...they have got enough torque to move biggest container ship..the Panama canal haulers
Those cables running sideways from the loco would exert a huge sideways pull. I was wondering that they don't tend to pull it off the rails -- but probably, the thick middle rail has a cross-section that dovetails with a sliding part on the engine that anchors it to the rail.
for what i could find on the internet, it is indeed stuck to the middle racked rail. i thought it had a counter wheel on the land side like a rollercoaster but that's just the electrical hook up. so they could potentially end up in the lock.. but i seen a video of one getting flattened by a ship and not even derailing so they are built tough.
Now I understand why the new locks are so much more efficient: The cog trains all return empty after each escort through the lock, the new system has tug boats escort the next ship back down the locks after escorting one up. No wasted trip like these loooong sloooow empty returns.

...... Mules are used for side-to-side and braking control in the locks. Forward motion into and through the locks is provided by the ship's engines.

No steam. The canal always used the electric mules to steady the ships while going thru the locks.

yes they use a central cog in line with the axel on the wheels and the rail. i think
