This video raised more questions than answers for me. / Installation seems a bit finicky and could be problematic if not properly installed. For example @11:54 it looks like there may be a bare spot where it did not fill in between the hoof and the mold. I can think of several ways to modify the mold to reduce the risk of air bubbles being trapped in the mold or leaving gaps. / Hoe many times can a mold be reused? / How does the final product affect the normal growth of the hoof? / I.E. Will it cause problems with a healthy hoof? Stunted growth? misshapen growth? / How does it adjust to normal hoof growth? Does it crack or break apart as the hoof grows larger? / How hard is the material? Does it allow any give or is it like walking on concrete transmitting vibration to the horses feet, leg, ankle? / Since it's bonded to the hoof, If it cracks or breaks will it rip the hoof apart as well? / How long does it last compared to a standard shoe? / Since it will wear unevenly how thin can it be in any one area before it needs to be replaced. / Video could do without the music. Especially when they're talking.
You're on the right track. there's definitely improvements to be made. Make sure to look into things like "shore hardness". I've considered this for my horse as well, and being a mechanical engineer I've had very similar questions.
I have the same questions. But also, even though they applied an anti-bacterial solution, if even one bacteria remains alive it can cause problems. As for growth, I did some research and found that a horse's hoof can grow about 1/4" per month, and, just like our fingernails, they grow from the top. So really, how often are these expected to last? I think this is a great solution for some instances where a horse needs extra protection, but I do not think it's a good idea for everyday, continuous use.

🧐 the horses shoe has gone through many evolutions Around 2500 BC, war horses normally strapped on chariots were widely used in warfare, and horses had to be equipped with some form of protective foot gear made out of leather. At any rate, the practice of horseshoe-making became widespread during 1000 AD, mostly in Europe. The shoes were made from light bronze alloys characterized by a scalloped shape structure and six nail holes. Over time, the scallop-shaped shoes gradually disappeared. Two nail holes were added into the design. This resulted in a wider and heavier structure. By the 14th century, horseshoes became a common commodity. It began selling in large quantities in medieval Europe. Specialized shoes were designed for horses used in different situations such as trade, transportation, or war. By the early 1900s, equestrian horseshoes became a commercial success, owing to a stable market brought by the emergence of horse-riding as a sport. It was during the 1900 Olympic Games that equestrian was introduced to the world as a competitive sport. A new age dawned for horseshoes and horse use in general.
@@Pygmyz06 the history lesson took longer than I thought, but here we are!! I was hoping you got the gist of my observation Thank you though, very cool learning the actual history of it 🤙🏽
I wonder about the breathability/flexibility important to the frog and growing hoof and sole structures if sealed behind polyurethane. Won't that artificial, non-permeable environment create a damp, warm haven for all sorts of bacteria and fungi to thrive ? I think the concept has merit ... just not sure the prototype has got rid of some potentially major hoof health risks/issues. Like others, I also wonder how difficult the formahoof will be to remove and further weaken/ damage the hoof wall in the process.
This is actually absolutely brilliant. I’m very impressed with how patient (and gentle) a lot of these horses are, especially with the rear hoof repairs and treatment that takes a bit of time behind the horse.
It’s amazing to me that is humans keep finding ways to make our animals more comfortable or heal better. If only we could apply this care to each other. ❤️
Im' glad folks are working on making newer and better horse shoes, whether or not this is the method used going forward or some other idea, the search for newer and better ways is almost always worth while.
This stuff has saved the life of at least one mare at our barn. Thanks to formahoof, she was able to carry her foal to term and is well on her way to being healthy again.
@@Laroac her hooves were so bad, they were going to have to put her down if they got much worse but she was pregnant at the time so they would have lost the baby too
I've seen these in action, made by professionals at using alternative types of hoof protection. And it still, to this day, feels like a lot of chance is involved. If one of the many factors needed for these, or adhesive options, can not be achived, they tend be faulty. They work fine when everything is perfectly prepared, which sometimes just isn't an option e.g. you come to a private owner, and the horses stand in mud all day. An adhesive wont work properly except you go through a long process of drying and so on. And most importantly, a lot of horses do not have the patience for that kind of procedure. At least I havent seen a lot who do in my years. All these alternative horseshoes have their place to be used, but they are an >Option< but not a >Replacement< for iron. People tend to forget that. But, I gotta say, you work beautifully and I hope there will always be farriers like you who can do these types of shoeing this well, so people like me don't have to. Cheers from austria!
Yeap, starting to question what drugs were used to keep...her? so calm during this demonstration. I dont know single horse that would be THAT calm with out drugs involved, not that i have huge experience with the horses though..
It would seem to be a well trained horse who's owners are good to it. It clearly has no problem trusting all the people around it, who are picking up and moving its legs. If the owners did not spend as much time with it as they obviously do, I doubt it would have been so well behaved. Edit: In fact, you can see at 4:00 when the farrier walks around the front of the horse, it just picks up its right leg for him, so I doubt any sort of drugs were used, as the horse is clearly alert.
Amazing to see that even the oldest, tried and true proven technologies can be improved upon today. Certainly helps to have a very co-operative horse that seems to love the pedicure.
@@whitter86 Not mentioned here about how long the poly shoe will last, particularly if an iron shoe is paired with it. No mention of how many times an iron shoe can be applied to the poly shoe. Looks like a good repair for a cracked or damaged hoof or to prevent further hoof damage.

I think this would be good in a situation where a hoof wall is broken a way to fix it. But I can't imagine sealing up the frog and the inside of the hoof and it not getting any air circulation and this being healthy and not a breeding ground for bacteria or to over soften it. Kudos to the horse in this video though. I think this would be awfully hard to do for a horse that didn't stand this patient or still. And when he said it's going through the curing process I seen the horse pick his hoof up quickly I'm wondering if the curing process doesn't get too hot
I saw this once when a horse suffered from partial hoof loss after a laminitis. It worked well but they could use it just for 8 weeks at the longest, because it could hinder the natural growth of the hoof.
This is why I'm against my mother getting a horse for the first time despite being in her 60s now. She has no experience whatsoever and horses aren't like dogs where it's easier to learn without the dog suffering. You mess up with a horse that has serious consquences.

I wonder if he has a wee bit of a foot fetish? " Mom, your toes are so pretty! Like the color of a pink sunset!" Lol
This is very interesting. I was shoeing horses when I was age 10. I have the scares on my forearms to show for it. My grandfather was a master farrier and shod race horses until about 1960 age 80. He would use his anvil for exercise in the morning. In the 20's he attended Cornell University, NY Vet school to learn horse physiology so he could do corrective shoeing. He thought it up. He would go down to the practice track very early in the morning and watch them train. He could look at them going through their paces so he could determine the correct way he was going to treat their feet and shoe them. Then they would bring their horse up to the tent for their shoes. In the 50's he was getting $40-$100 horse to shoe them. He used aluminum shoes and long before that he put borium shoes for the NYC police dept. horses in the 30's. He had the contract for the entire NYC police department. He was from Steuben Co, NY. Indeed he would have found this very interesting.
@@robertomoi2044 Sorry a typo by me. It suppose to be scarred. Honestly it's brilliant! Add colors and you've got a product all horse aficionados will be throwing money at you for!

That’s incredible, what a great idea! Not only does it encapsulate the whole hoof to keep out stones, prevent injury to the frog etc., makes shodding so easy with a pre-made off the peg shoes - but it looks cool too! They are very smart hooves (oh, and no hoof oil to faff with either).
I won't do this to the horses I love! What these cowboys didn't tell you! Remember your horse's hoofs grow, when separation starts and bacteria starts to grow inside of the hoofs! This happens to at least one one or two hoofs that will get infected! Your vet bills are going to be the kicker! Never do this to your horse, too many nightmares can happen, not to mention the cancer-causing agents present!
Such a fantastic innovation for those with hoof issues. Quite an involved process, but I'm sure it's well worth it as there isn't anything like it for comparison. Beautiful horse. Must bring lots of peace of mind to those with hoof injuries and challenges. My question is, how available is it? Farriers will need special training I assume? Thanks for sharing, very interesting! Thumbs up of course!
How do you replace the horseshoe ?. Honestly, I work more on the look. It looks easier with black or other colors. I don't know many humans who wear rubber shoes. You should have a vet talk about the benefits and disbenefits. Some random person putting rubber shoes on a horse will not convince anyone? The best thing is this video raises awareness of animals. Why shouldn't a horseshoe be updated? But is this the best solution for the horse?
Stephanie Hallberg it's not rubber, polyurethane is hard plastic. pretty scatter-brained comment btw. ;) the translucent PU could be a practical choice for easy working, because you can see air bubbles as such inside, or it could be chosen for the demonstration to show more of what's going on. it's probably also just the basic material that's available, because the stuff is not usually used in places whereits looks matter.
@@Ass_of_Amalek In Stephanie's defense, I've never seen hard polyurethane either. I've seen it as polyurethane cosmetic sponges and as synthetic leather, so I understand her confusion. That being said I have no horse in this race (ha) about the rest of the conversation because I don't know much about horses.
I've owned horses for over 20 years. This looks interesting for taking stress off tendonds as well. How do you deal with bacteria growth? Since this is pretty much a hermetically sealed solution.
@@PabzRoz i did pay attention to the video. Our smiths do that too when they use foam under the horseshoe and even then, when they remove the iron, it stinks like someone died in there. No need to be so passive agressive.

Learning is a good thing you guys. Wouldn’t it suck if it only recommend you things you’ve already seen/done a million times before?
It's always good to learn if you learn the correct things. If you jump into learning about something by learning that the wrong thing is good, than you'll spend your whole life thinking that.
My thoughts imediatly go to fungus, and moisture buildup weakening the hoof. Aswell as wont it hurt when the hoof have no place to grow underneath the capsule?
that was my exact thought, the growth most of all, moisture depending how airtight it is might not be an issue but the growth .... I'm very curious how it works.
Urethane is tough stuff and it has a fair amount of 'give' so it will flex and move as the hoof grows. The problem with modern hooves is breeding. A horse is never bred because it has good hoof structure. The result is lots of horses that need a lot of hoof care or remedial work so they can do the job they were bred for without breaking down. I must admit though, I wouldn't want that farriers bill.
This is my thoughts too. What about rain, mud walking through water wet grass etc. Don't hooves need air? This doesn't seem like the best be all end all solution. I'm not an expert by any means but it doesn't seem like it's the best long term
I had the same thoughts. Acrylic nails weaken the nail underneath. Worry’s me for the horse for long term. I’m sure there is more to it. Perfect for a hoof cracked
@@holhawk1866 My nails get stronger under acrylic as I tend to tap them a lot, which makes the nail stronger due to impact... then when I go back to my natural nails, as they are not as strong, tapping eventually chips etc and I am back to my thin ass nails!
Does the hoof grow right underneath it though? When I get acrylic nails for example, my nail underneath grows funny, bumpy and deformed. Hoofs are made of keratin like our nails, so curious about how it affects the hoof.
This is crucial information and technological advancements that will improve my life as someone who has owned exactly zero horses.

Video could do without the music. also will it hold moisture and bacteria??

Only took a thousand years to improve the original design, but we’re here now!
I mean I think the most high got the original design right the first time just men wants to continue to abuse with the most high has given
🧐 the horses shoe has gone through many evolutions
Around 2500 BC, war horses normally strapped on chariots were widely used in warfare, and horses had to be equipped with some form of protective foot gear made out of leather.

Yea i wonder the same things
Well they filed
It down real fine and sprayed a disinfectant on it before they out it in the mold and only
Leave it on-for 6 weeks
For a damp environment all I could think of was softening of the keratin, hoof wall staying moist. Also, uneven application of the acrylic.
Exactly my thoughts. This must ruin the hoof in a wet environment.
Liz Steeds maybe a cushion layer need to be add with breathable hole to keep moisture out from rotting the hoof. I’m no expert just a thought.
This is actually absolutely brilliant. I’m very impressed with how patient (and gentle) a lot of these horses are, especially with the rear hoof repairs and treatment that takes a bit of time behind the horse.

I was wondering the same thing. And that mesh absorbing moisture and seeping down and staying trapped in the formahoof.

Stephanie Hallberg it's not rubber, polyurethane is hard plastic. pretty scatter-brained comment btw. ;)
the translucent PU could be a practical choice for easy working, because you can see air bubbles as such inside, or it could be chosen for the demonstration to show more of what's going on. it's probably also just the basic material that's available, because the stuff is not usually used in places whereits looks matter.

I youtubed videos for woodworking. I just watched a nail video and now I am here. Not sure why but here I am watching. Nice video
Does the hoof grow right underneath it though? When I get acrylic nails for example, my nail underneath grows funny, bumpy and deformed. Hoofs are made of keratin like our nails, so curious about how it affects the hoof.
In case it’s been 3 months of pain not knowing, hooves grow from the hairline, sort of a cuticle called the “coronet band”.
Yours grow from the bottom too. . Any buckling is from the filing. Unlike the horse acrilics ruin our nails. .
