    That was some incredible diagnosis and work. I went to Oklahoma Horseshoeing School back in the 1980s and learned a lot. One thing I definitely learned is there is no substitute for doing the work, caring for the horse, perfecting the shoe placement and forge work, and definitely fine tuning the shoe through know how and hard work. You're a masterful farrier and your vet work on this horse is to be admired. You care about your job/calling and you are a master horseshoer. Thank you.

Fortunately none of my horses have ever had any injuries or problems with their feet except a poor old soul I rescued. He had foundered but we managed to fix him up and for now he’s just enjoying his twilight years in the fields with my other horses. I hope his feet continue to behave for at least a few more years so he can enjoy just being a horse.

    This was my first time ever seeing a horseshoe being made. I thought you got them already made. I’m very impressed. That farrier has impressive skills 👍👍

    • @AlphaDogChoppers
      @AlphaDogChoppers ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Most horseshoes are bought already made. They come in a selection of sizes. The ferrier has to shape them to fit a horse’s foot. Some ferriers use a forge and heat the shoes to fit them, but many ferriers will adjust the fit cold.
      What we saw here is non-typical. A bar shoe like this is equivalent to a custom made orthotic. Shoes like this are a one-off in order to reinforce a foot that needs additional structural support.

  • @SarahJSwift
    @SarahJSwift ปีที่แล้ว +14

    This can also occur due to contracted heels due to improper trimming. If the lateral bar wall is scraped thin, it causes a weakness in those bars, which are like metal stanchions in engineering, which hold the heels out. When they become thin and weak, they can no longer do their job, so the heels curl inwards squeezing the frog which then inverts, causing this injury. Contracted heels can be dangerous as it can damage the cartilage, which is called sheared heels. This can end the career and life of a horse.

    You can always tell how well kept and cared for a horse is by the quality of the work done on his hoofs, and If I were to ever own a horse I would want this quality of work done on him/her. THe hoof is perfectly shaped and to have custom shoes made right on the spot for the animal's needs based upon the condition and health of the hooves is the only way to go. Something about the look of a horse whose hooves are clean, perfectly shaped and smooth, like brand new tires and rims on your well kept off road truck! Well done! I bet all the other horses in the barn are all jealous now over the custom shoe this horse has for his sore foot! LOL

I too used Kopertox and put him on 3/4" rubber mats under his shelter so that he could escape from the mud at least most of the day. You can see the horse strutting out at the end probably thinking "about friggin' time!"

    I love animals. I love to see animals who have some kind of injury, been neglected, other issue be fixed or treated with kindness. I have been watching videos about cows being trimmed for years, with the problems they have. I have recently become fascinated with videos of horses and donkeys that have been neglected and have long hooves.
