Was confused about how this was done (because clearly it was on some kind of wire) until the beginning of take 4 where that guy is adjusting Kermit's bike and looks up at whatever crane is above him. Very clever!
Oh, _that's_ how they did it! I was trying to figure it out -- no room for a puppeteer behind or underneath, and no ceiling above. I'm always impressed with how much effort and resourcefulness goes into these movies. Not to mention how much effort is put into never breaking the magic
Starting with the take at 2:13 you can also clearly see what is likely the shadow of whatever is holding up Kermit. It can also be seen in earlier takes, but it's not as easy.
Brilliant! I love that moment where each time they start the take with the clapboard, Kermit’s just kinda looking around (probably humming “Rainbow Connection” to himself because after all those rehearsals and takes, that damn song is stuck in his head, but I digress) but otherwise doing nothing. Then it’s like he realizes “Oh, that’s my cue; better get rolling.” You totally forget he’s a puppet on a remote control.
i just read about this, and it said that they had to keep halting shooting and waiting until it was overcast so they could avoid the camera seeing the shadows from the crane and etc. they had set up to make this work. It is delightful! Thanks for this video.
@@dgontar He's a giant marionette for this shot. In the next Muppet movie when all the bikes are riding at once they used remote controls to make them sing.
I would like to see all The Swedish Chef sketches from The Muppet Show as Raw Un-edited Outtakes, Alternate Takes, un-aired/un-used Swedish Chef episodes, mistakes & bloopers in a 5 hour video. I guess it exists in an archive at The Jim Henson Company or The Muppets Studio/Muppets Inc. or Disney Archives. There's already 1 outtake of the "Chicken in the Basket" episode on the internet, so I would love to see the rest too.
@@abagelmuppetstuff I'm guessing that Frank Oz was in a cherry picker manipulating the bike and Kermit's head was on radio control being manipulated with a transmitter off camera by a second operator.
There's no way they could make this movie today! At least not without using CGI. People today are too fat to fit into a frog suit with such thin arms and legs! I feel bad for the actor that had to stay in the suit through all those takes. Also, the average intelligence of people has decreased over the years and there's no one left alive that has the brain power to make their bicycle levitate like that.
At 1:38, watch the shadow moving on the ground just behind Kermit. It’s the shadow of the crane rig from which Kermit and the bicycle are being suspended.
You gotta respect Kermit for keeping a straight face and staying in character the whole time. Now that’s professionalism.

It's not easy to be green
I lost it when the bike started levitating.
KERMIE PHONE HOME.
where?
@@SbzBoris at around 0:22 the back wheel lifts off the ground and the bike starts floating ahaha
Oh did you? Did you "Lose it"? Did you actually "lose it"
* sicko mode intro starts *
Now *this* makes you appreciate the effort they took to get a frog to ride a bicycle.
You can’t forget that scene from Great Muppet Caper where ALL the Muppets are on bikes. Like wow! Amazing craftsmanship there.
That’s true
You should watch the outtake of the Emmet Otter scene with the rolling drum! 😂
I always have great respect for actors who do their own stunts

Driving with a permit like
kermit with a permit
Even though it’s not intentionally supposed to be funny, this is making me laugh my ass off!
Same. Idk why but I laugh at the fact that Kermit does say anything about the poster
"Look, look Jim...I can't.....I can't......I'm sorry to say it, but I can't ride a bicycle. I just can't."
"Don't worry, we'll work something out."
(Sigh) Rest in Peace, Jim. Someday we'll find it, the Rainbow Connection, the lovers, the dreamers, and we.
It’s me not we
0:24 CUT, the bicycle is off the ground
Riding your bike home from the bar at 3am
Or just me riding a bike...
Kermit was having a hard time because of that French Fried Frog Legs billboard.
OMGG I did not noticed this until now!

0:22 - The bike is levitating! ... I lost it.
I saw this movie with my mom and dad as we love the Muppets. This scene made us laugh until we cried!
Play some Silent Hill music over this and it totally fits...
@1:15 Kermit is definitely looking down at the front wheel trying to diagnose the problem, and that's going to keep me up at night.
To busy focusing on how they did the movie magic, didn't even see the giant frog legs bill board
It's a plot point in the movie.
Rest In Peace (R.I.P.) Jim Henson. He is definitely missed.
I’m assuming the shadow in the background is Jim Henson so I think it was done by tying string to Kermit and operating him like a marionette
I assume the feet are adhered to the peddles and the peddles move by themselves as the bike goes foward
It’s so weird and cool that how they make him do things without hands or strings to control him. 😮😮😮😮
What do you mean?
You know they used a crane to move kermit right
@@marcelamelo4012 He's talking about Kermit's mouth movement and facial expressions. Was the crane used for that as well?

HOW DID THEY DO THE BIKE
If you look closely you can see the strings attached to the bike, and the shadow of the crane that was controlling the pedals!
@@abagelmuppetstuff I'm guessing that Frank Oz was in a cherry picker manipulating the bike and Kermit's head was on radio control being manipulated with a transmitter off camera by a second operator.

Kermit made the bike levitate!!
It's cool he has lefthand drive
it looked so easy in the movie, But it was more hard than you think.
Why is Kermit hardly seen on Sesame Street anymore? Is Disney and HBO (not so sure about PBS) separating Kermit and Sesame Street from each other?
How did they do that
I'm in the mood for frog legs after watching this
