  • Lots of Glaswegians are unaware that Glasgow has its very own statue of Liberty.
    Of those who do know, a lot are wrong about its location.
    In this episode I track down Glasgow's real statue of Liberty and tell the story of the ones that could be but are not.
    Join me on another tour around Astonishing Glasgow.

    Brilliant video! It's utterly amazing how much beautiful architecture there is everywhere in Glasgow, but to hear the history behind it all is just so interesting.

    Just discovered your channel - love it! Born and bred in Glasgow but learning so much from this. Makes me want to take up photography again - forgot how beautiful Glasgow architecture is. Thank you! Will share with my kiwis who left Scotland 28 years ago!

    Queens Park, my old area.
    Another thing the building on the corner of Langside Rd has the scariest basement flats ever. The door knockers looked like something out of Hammer House of Horrors.😉

    Well done bud... that is a new one for me, and I have been thru that big tome 'Public Sculpture in Glasgow' too ;) You missed the angel on Sauchiehall Street tho... and there's a coupla belters in Paisley too.

      Cheers mate. There are some cracking sculptures and angels about but only one liberty. There is a contender on the top of the Peoples palace as well but the statues on the palace are representations of Glasgow industries so not liberty.

    I started work at the City Archives in late 1964. I was given a tour of city chambers including all the way to the top of the building. The weather vane or whatever it is I was informed was held steady with a 1ton lead weight beneath it

    Most folk don’t look up when they are walking about, shuffling along, staring at a phone, or head down not wanting to make eye contact……. Always look up when you’re walking through places

    There used to be a copy of the New York statue of Liberty in Partick, standing on the roof of the Sovereign Boot Co. burger bar. It disappeared after the shop closed down and Tesco was built on the site. By the way, the Queen's Park tenement was designed by William McNicol Whyte, not William Young (sorry to correct you).

    Was that last clip the Ferry ? I played there in a Rush Tribut in 2006, Steven Segal was on the following week haha love your little vids, my Father and Grandparents lived in Partick

      Thank you and yes, thats the old Renfrew ferry thats now a venue. I'm not sure but in 2006 it may have been moored on the opposite bank and a little bit upstream of its current location. (maybe Steven Segal scissor kicked it to where it is now?)

    It's a real shame it's not on the western corner of the building, then (pointing SW) it would be facing the one in New York
    There's one in Paris that faces in the direction of NY, it's very close to the Eiffel Tower and arguably more interesting to visit, with none of the beggars or pickpockets of people flogging junky wee models for €10

      @@AstonishingGlasgow I had the Raleigh Strika which looked a little like the GRIFTER but a smaller version. But after my Grifter Dad bought me a Second hand Raleigh CHOPPER (Purple) which I absolutely loved too but when BMX came out and I saw E.T. I wanted One!!! 🤦🏽😂

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I remember right that range went Budgie, Striker, Grifter but like you say, as soon as E.T. came out it was BMX all the way.

    Strange how Glasgow was constructed mostly in the late 1800’s or so they say and yet not one of the buildings under construction exist. I think these buildings were founded and not constructed during this period

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You have lost me a bit there. City chambers were started 1882 and finished 1888. Post office building was finished 1878. East Side of George Square was the bank of scotland finished 1874. Thats just the square. There are many buildings finished in the late 1800's.

    Sqiggly bridge or squinty bridge? I've been away a long time...

    • @AstonishingGlasgow
      @AstonishingGlasgow  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Both. Squinty bridge (technically the Clyde arch) is a road bridge in Finnieston and the Squiggly bridge is a footbridge between King George V bridge and Kingston bridge.

    I must've been in George Square hundreds of times, until I migrated to Australia in the 1980s. However one time stands out for me: as an apprentice plumber in 1977 I'd been doing a job in nearby Miller Street, & would sit & eat my lunch in George Square. One day someone had left a hose on the ground across the Square, & I sat there watching an "unfunny comedy" of many people tripping over this. Luckily they all just stumbled, & none of them fell on their faces. "Lunchtime entertainment"!
