I have been there many times. One time, in the middle of winter, snow on the ground and freezing, i came upon two elderly homeless men living within the cemetery. One had been a boxer and was 'punch drunk' and the other called himself 'Cannonball' and recited the most wonderful poetry he had written. I said he needed to write that down, he said then people would steal his words. Needless to say i came home without my scarf, gloves and jumper.
Hi 👋 I had a great aunt Jean Reoch who lived overlooking Greyfriers Kirkyard I remember visiting her many times when I was young, when I got bored of the adult conversation I would have a wander around the Kirkyard and then cross over to Chambers Street and have a good couple of hours in the Museum. Oh I wish I could go back and live it all over again those were the days. 🥃🥃🏴

Cool beans! I’ve been thinking of that place recently for some reason and how magical it is. Ever since I was a kid and my Edinburgh-born grandfather told me the story of Greyfriar’s Bobby and I read my mother’s copy of the book. Went back in early 90’s for the Festival and saw a wonderful play of “Daniel and the lions” performed in the kirk. Just remembered that. Loved it.
You mentioned that a lot of raillings were removed during the war but fun fact, a lot of the metal gathered wasn't even used as there was an abundance of it collected but it wasn't mentioned til years later due to it being a way to keep people's spirits up thinking that they were contributing to the war effort.
Yeah, oddly enough you can't make Spitfires out of cast iron railings. I believe a lot of the metal they collected was eventually dumped in the North Sea,
If I recall right, the Black Mausoleum is in fact a seperate mausoleum inside the Covenanters' Prison. Most of the scratch, bruise, or faint incidents are said to have happened there.

I've always enjoyed the mystery and beauty of graveyards from a very young age. Living in Woodford Green Essex, and having Epping forest to wonder though......This place, however,is horrendous to me...a more sinister, ugly place I have yet to see anywhere else on my travels through life... A dreadful eyesore in every sense of the word.
During a recent visit to Greyfriars, we were intrigued by the use of skeletons, skulls and cross bones in the funerary art-and the words MEMENTO MORI. We’ve since learned Memento mori is a Latin phrase that means "remember you must die". It's a symbolic or artistic trope that serves as a reminder of the inevitability of death and the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures. The concept has its roots in Christianity and the philosophers of classical antiquity. The concept of memento mori appeared in funerary art and architecture starting in the medieval period. We visited Greyfriars Cemetery Oct/Nov ‘24, hailing from Franklin, TN-a civil war town in the U.S. Though the history of our town is comparatively a drop in the bucket to Edinburgh’s ancient history, our love of history runs deep none the less. Thanks for your video!
It's a shame some needed restoration TLC hasn't been done on the monuments, especially the one at 7:30. The writing is there, but extremely muted with grime and soot blackening. A good pressure wash would bring them back to brilliance and wouldn't harm the stonework. Then there is the gravestone laying on the ground at 8:10. That surprises me. I wouldn't think proper caretakers of the location would let that happen.
Doesn’t seem to bad this place. Nice for a picnic in the summer. Seriously though, if you feel uneasy, a 6th sense if you will, that something a little off. Then it probably is.
Some people find this place terrifying and there are some scary stories attached but I’ve never been creeped out by it. Being from Edinburgh, as a teen my friends and I would join tour groups most weekends but none of us experienced anything.
When the people erected these beautiful monuments for themselves, they didn’t know that that one day it all would be falling apart, and no one would remember them anymore.
Another epic one this one definitely does have a gothic eerie haunted grim feel and look to it also reminds of around the Happy Potter time overall I absolutely loved this one

Locked in at night? I'd see the morning gibbering like a lunatic and hair turned white.
I went here in the seventies and took many photos i find cemeteries very peaceful to go round you look at the old names that are not used anymore. I took a picture of his masters grave with i looked at the photo there was a ghostly kind of shade in front of it
I've always enjoyed the mystery and beauty of graveyards from a very young age. Living in Woodford Green Essex, and having Epping forest to wonder though......This place, however,is horrendous to me...a more sinister, ugly place I have yet to see anywhere else on my travels through life... A dreadful eyesore in every sense of the word.
As a local, I have to agree with you.
I love this place.Thank you for the great tour.
Would be cool to see you break out the ol drain camera. See if we can't see what's in the black mausoleum!
Great tour of the cemetery. Thanks for sharing.
Did anyone else see that at 20:30? Just as he says "fireplaces" look at one of the stones in the back. It looks like smoke.
Thankyou for your time today I injoy be here with you 😊
Sandra Boston Massachusetts. 😊
I have to say , this is the most awesome cemetery I’ve seen to date . I would love too see it in person!!
rather plain and bland imo. Have a look at rigoletto (spelling? ) cemetary in argentina.
@@Mrs.Karen_Walker you’ve got to be kidding, more bazar than this ?
@@Mrs.Karen_Walker i will , thanks for the reply !
I would love to go there. And yes I would want to go in the locked areas. I have a fascination with graveyards. I have to touch them.
You can tell this cemetery was for the rich only . Beautifully scary but I love it 😍😍😍. Thank you so much .
Thank you for all the history .really enjoyed the video .
Those mortsafes also might have deterred grave robbers who just wanted jewelry/valuables instead of the corpse. 🙂
Some kids stole the skull from the crypt when I lived in Edinburgh and used it as a football. They were prosecuted for desecration of a sepluchre
Brave man. I don't like to visit cemeteries in case something comes home with me.
When the people erected these beautiful monuments for themselves, they didn’t know that that one day it all would be falling apart, and no one would remember them anymore.
Wow awesome cemetery and monuments
Another epic one this one definitely does have a gothic eerie haunted grim feel and look to it also reminds of around the Happy Potter time overall I absolutely loved this one
I've been in that cemetery a few times awesome a really powerful feeling
