  • If any of you are (or will be) playing in a small chamber group, you might find this video to be helpful. Playing in chamber groups is actually one of my favorite musical things to do, so I do have quite a few things to share. Let me know if you can add any advice or if you have any further questions. :)

Another tip I have is to listen to recordings beforhand. It will give you an overall impression of the piece but also of the parts when you come back in again after a break. Just don't try playing it like the recording then, do your own thing, it's only there for orientation :)
But I really loved the tips you gave, they totally match up with the experiences I had so far in my ensembles.
Many greetings from a fellow viola-playing musician in Germany

Hi! I'm an intermediate viola player and I'm glad I found your channel for advice! I'm signing up for a chamber group in my school so thank you for the helpful tips. Btw, you are a great cello player and I remember when I was first trying to decide my instrument I thought about getting the cello, but I got the viola instead because I already know how to play in bass clef because I also play the piano. Finding your channel, I'm more interested in playing cello and other deep sounding instruments. This advice has helped me so much and I'm ready in being in chamber groups!

Lovely. I sang as Head Soprano in a Chamber Choir and it was such a beautiful experience and for sure you need to listen to others as a unified group, not just doing for yourself.

Sarah Joy do you feel that your cello is safe in the stand? I've read that a cello should always go back in it's case, but is this a particularly good one?

Another rule to abide by , and this also applies to dancers and singers. If one person is off, the whole section is off. Even if no one is watching or listening, it ruins the performance .

A chamber group is (generally) one person to one part. Orchestra is multiple people on one part.
