Most snare drum stand basket arms are evenly spaced apart. If a 10 lug drum is being used, one or two of the lugs will be close or too close to one of the arms. That will force you to push the drum so that the basket arm is forced to one side or the other of the lug/tension rod spot (not good). The later year Ludwig Atlas snare stand has a different, uneven basket arm spacing. This allows for the arms to place directly between lug spaces. It works good for eight lug drums too.
@@CommonSenseMusician Yes it would have been good to talk about what you get from spending more on a high end stand. Infinite tilt angle over steped, arms with softer rubber suspension mounts allowing more resonance, single and double braced. feet being soft ruber, rather than hard plastic.(possible spike) bases with a one movable leg to help with set up for double pedals etc. I have a sonor designer stand from the late 90's still as good as the day i bought it with nearly all the 2020's features. I also have that ludwig atlas which is fantastic especially for moving quickly between a 15/14/13/12/10" snare drum.
I highly recommend this stuff to everyone who starts, but even the more experienced players will get a good portion "food for thought". Thanks for this elementary school of gear that is so helpfull for all of us. Great job, as always. Keep this "working drummer"-approach, I love it.
I don’t think I’ve seen anyone go into so much detail about something that is often totally overlooked even by experienced players, I think I spent my first year making the drums just look cool from the audiences perspective 😅

Being a drummer for many years I was never told or put the logo of the head with the logo of the drum for a drum kit a great tip and did it right after watching your video.
Good stuff. Of course, placement and angle issues will be a little different for those of us who use traditional grip, or who switch between grips. As you said, be willing to experiment and try different settings. Don't just assume that the first way we set it up is the best way.
Been playing drums for 45 years and for 40 of those years, I’ve always played with my snare basket backwards with the single arm pointed down. Why you ask?……..well that way my legs don’t ever rub the arms on the basket……when I’m playing my bass drum and high hat and I can get the snare drum closer to the rack…….
That sounds like good reasoning to me! I'm a huge fan of getting things closer together and more towards the center line of your body. Sounds like that's what you're doing. And it sounds like it's working great. Thank you for the comment!
Interesting video. I’ve been playing for almost 40 years, and I believe that part of my snare sound is based on setting the inside of the bottom hoop within the basket.
It interesting to see how this may have influenced some pro players style. For example if you look at Brad wilk from rage against the machine, he has the snare very tilted and between his legs making access difficult for rim sotts and ghost notes. This could lead to wrist/arm problems
It definitely could. Drums are so adjustable that sometimes a player just gets used to a certain setup and makes it work. One of the reasons I mentioned Steve Smith in the video is that he basically reinvented himself after getting famous with Journey. He realized he had some major deficiencies and worked to correct them.
