We purchased a neglected piece of land for less than one half the price of our neighbors. We found an abandoned well, septic system and an abandoned vehicle and 8 tons of metals, including copper. The abandoned well ended up being an artesian with perfect water. All we needed was to replace the well pump and casing. The abandoned vehicles and metals paid for our well rebuild, new septic piping, and the installation of the water line. Sometimes, blessings are found in the middle of the ugly. We love our property and are on course to produce most of our food by years end.

I'm fifteen and when you were talking to Jonah about getting a moped I started laughing because my dad is always joking about what car I'm going to drive too! Also you guys are so inspirational! We have 10 acres and are trying to create a little haven for our family and live off the land as much as possible. You guys have really helped me stay motivated and keep moving forwards with my goals for the property.

One word: "GOONIES" a must watch.
My 3 boys are 26, 23, and 19. They all listen to the old music. Classic rock, the stations call it. I'm 55. I call it geezer rock. I got sick to death of listening to the same songs over and over, and over (Hotel California comes to mind). Mostly, the only decent music I've heard being churned out lately seems to be some of the country stuff. I'll still listen to some Yonder Mountain String band (Oklahoma live is awesome), Avett brothers, and just about any kind of the good ole' Bluegrass. Funny, my kids used to make fun of me for my taste in music. Now, they are doing the same as yours and listening to all the stuff I used to play in the car. I think many of the kids now are listening to the older stuff. The smart ones, anyway.

Enjoyed the segment on buying land. I found my 6+ acres in North Carolina by searching online while I still lived in California. After narrowing down my list, I then flew out to North Carolina to view properties and make a decision. I did use a real estate agent to ensure the purchase process was done properly, but not to find the property. I paid about $5k per acre 9 + years ago. It was raw land with paved road to front of the property and along North side. After much work, I now have a large custom-built French Country home, chickens, 1 acre lake/pond for raising bass and catfish, fruit trees and now building a 400 square foot whoop house sunk 5 feet into the earth where I hope to garden year-round including warm climate crops like lemons, limes, and oranges.

Glad you are taking a rest. You guys deserve it. I wonder if you would consider studying Julia Ross' Amino Acid Chart. Her book, the diet cure really helped me understand how amino acids work. I often wonder if you do so well because you are getting full on amino acids in the meat diet. I am also glad that you are adding fermented veggies to help you digest meat. You might consider digestive enzymes and hcL, that helps you digest the high protein diet. Hope you won't be offended. I just love the correlation between good amino acids and health..

Burning wood produces emissions that are widely recognized as harmful to human health. Many of these harmful emissions can occur both indoors and outdoors and many devices operate around the clock. People with lung disease face special risks, but so do children, older adults, people with cardiovascular disease and diabetics.

at +0:20 rather than shifting buckets, just put some sort sign, marker, or token hanging on a nail above the next one to use. Then just shift the marker, not the buckets. Alternatively, get 7 buckets and label each one with a day of the week. Or, simpler, just leave a gap between the next and last buckets and leave a scrap block of wood in the gap.
At 1:55, put chicken wire on the outside and staple it down to the top edge (and outside surface) of that baseboard (and of course zip tie the top of it onto the wire fencing).

Y’all need to watch Garden Answer’s new chicken coop video and take a page from their book-put up hardware cloth instead of chicken wire. Chicken wire won’t keep out determined predators. I mean, realistically, if it can’t keep a chicken *in*, it won’t keep even the dumbest raccoon *out*.

Laura's chickens are pets/family. Justin's chickens are food /workers. I'm starting to wonder someone who's teaching the rest of us to homestead animals REALLY has a hard time keeping control of his livestock. Pigs get out because they are hungry and too big for the small area they are giving. It's really more comical too watch .

    • @chrissihr1031

@@marcoturtlecraze2484 Rats are predators where chickens are involved, and the Rhodes have already lost quite a few chicks to a determined rat once before. The high tunnel might as well be a big block of Swiss cheese for all the easy ways in for small predators.

    • @marcoturtlecraze2484
      @marcoturtlecraze2484 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They had problems with rats and chicks and fixed the holding area but they have enough cats to keep them at bay. In a farm you will always have rats. I understand rats can be predators but they aren't having a problem with rats because they have enough predators. The LGD keeps everything else besides aerial predators out. I do however like the idea of hardware cloth:) I think mainly they are just trying to keep their chickens from escaping like everyday which I agree with hardware cloth I like that!

Jonah should buy a old truck. If he puts a dent in it so what. Not a big deal. Plus he or you won’t be in debt for 10 years.
    Some truck models to AVOID.
    2000-2012 ford f 150. Bad motor issues
Any Chevy truck in existence they are all garbage.
Any truck of any brand newer then 2016. Since 2016 they have used cheap parts that are hard to get and break a lot.
My personal pick would be a 1999-2004 dodge 2500. Just find one with the 5.9 GAS motor. And avoid ones that are rusty. But they are easy to find and are pretty safe and reliable

Gravel is probably your best bet. A French drain is perhaps what you need to do to protect your barn. Wood chips would hold in the moisture which is something you don't want next to the barn foundation. Gravel will channel it away.

The Lyme disease he had too long before he got antibiotics so he missed that window and so he has Chronic Lyme Disease. The Lyme disease causes him to hurt in his joints also. I believe the infection is gone from the Campylobacter along with the reactive arthritis. This is what still remains from the Chronic Lyme Disease. The inflammation from the Lyme Disease is why he eats mostly meat so his joints don't hurt as much as with a "normal" diet. Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease. I don't think he has that.

Babes in Toyland? Sorry, but that's not Babes in Toyland...it's the sequel from the 80's with Drew Barrymore. And I loved both of them, but the first one with Annette Funicello and Tommy Sands was much better than the 80's sequel, for sure. "Toyland, Toyland, wonderful girl and boy land!"
My kids are 19 and 20 now and they watched a lot of what I watched when I was a kid, and they listened to much of the same music I listened to. Classic Rock for the most part, but also Nickelback and Metallica. My youngest is a Nickelback fan now. My oldest somehow ended up liking country music more than anything else.
BTW, we're having torrential storms here in California this week and yeah, we're doing absolutely nothing outside atm. We have no animals other than two indoor cats so that works for us right now. The rain has looked a lot like what your storms look like and that's been so weird. Our "rain storms" are usually like your light showers! LOL
So, we are waterlogged. I look forward to the day that I have animal chores in the rain, though. I so want a reason to go out in the rain other than just to simply go out there. :)
But please keep people out here in your thoughts and prayers and send whatever positive energy you can, whatever it is you do. We have several communities along the coast where their homes are simply gone. Many people are without power and are in flood zones. Tonight we have a flash flood warning until 7:15pm pacific time. It's really horrible for some people here. Our home isn't in the path of any potential flash floods as far as I know but we know people whose homes are and they're scared.

I hope they all get through this okay. Those flash floods are so scary. We bought our homestead up on a bluff because we really didn't want to be in a flood. Amazing how much it is finally raining there.

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

After you get Jonah his license, he'll need to find himself a woman like his Mom. Daniel Boone found his wife, Rebecca (she spelled it differently than The Beautiful One) in North Carolina; they were married for 56 years and had10 children.

I like what the Doherty's say, but again, they forget to add in a woodlot for firewood! I'm wondering if they don't heat with wood?

At their place on the top of the hill it's woods and they do let the cows go up there too. They might heat with wood. I don't know for sure.

@@StoneKathryn The thing is, when they mention how much land they think a small farm should have, they never mention a woodlot, either in this video or in the one Justin did when he visited them (this clip may be from that video). Yet a woodlot is important, I think, both for firewood and for potential building materials. How much land that should be would depend on the climate, how much firewood they needed and how much could be sustainably produced per acre without over-cutting.

@@kathleensanderson3082 I agree that a wood lot is very important. We burn wood and so far it's been off our own land. We've been here 13 years. We have two wood stoves in our home. We have trees along our property line too for potential firewood in the future. We also like the well defined border of our property with the trees and it feels more "homey" to have trees all around us.

Burning wood produces emissions that are widely recognized as harmful to human health. Many of these harmful emissions can occur both indoors and outdoors and many devices operate around the clock. People with lung disease face special risks, but so do children, older adults, people with cardiovascular disease and diabetics.

@@Miguel195211 I have lived with wood stoves as the sole heat in my home for most of my 65 years. Yes, wood smoke can be a pollutant, and where there is a safe, reliable, and affordable alternative, that should be used preferentially.
      However.
Electricity and bought-in fuel oil and propane or natural gas are not fully reliable -- the supply can be interrupted, as should be obvious to anyone who has
      1. Experienced a power outage for any reason, or
      2. Reads the news and is aware of what's going on in Europe at the moment, with Russia not supplying the natural gas that Europe has depended on to heat their homes.
We CANNOT be totally dependent on outside sources for something so absolutely essential as a way to heat our homes. There are a few possible alternatives to using wood to heat private homes that are being worked on, such as geo-thermal (which is still dependent on electricity to move the water through the system in most cases) and methane, but they are not suitable for very many homes at this point, and may never be. A home woodlot, and a good wood stove, even if only used as a backup system, are, in my opinion, absolutely essential. Just ask the people in Texas who nearly (or actually) froze to death a couple of years ago when their grid failed during a cold spell!
And, there are wood stoves that don't produce much smoke at all, such as the masonry heaters from Eastern Europe/Russia/Finland, and the rocket mass heater still in development in this country. These not only smoke a lot less than standard stoves, they also heat your house on about one-third as much wood.
My guess is that you have probably never experienced a prolonged failure of heat in your home; anyone who has understands the necessity of having some kind of backup system. And the best backup system is one that does not depend on power or fuel brought in from off the property. Thus, anyone buying land for a farm really needs to look for property that includes at least two or three acres of woods, more is better.
