Others in the line will raise their voice for a while and then will grumble a little then accept the situation. The reason is that he too is not as पाक साफ़ in his work place. If he hasn't taken bribe, he has shirked his work or charged some extra rickshaw charges in his LTC bill or so on. Even our Journalist बंधु when go somewhere to cover a conference, they are officially given a gift hamper by the management and what's that ? To take it further let me ask our penalists here - for extracting the truth, you too would have dished out some money during your career. It's a give & take arrangement in human behaviour everywhere, but in our Indian society it is more tilted towards unethical side than in other societies.

But unfortunately if we try to see anywhere in world as a beacon of hope , we will not be able to find one democracy to look upto ! So what can we do ? Anna Hazare tried to do something , but the political forces were allligned against him . Sadly, this was a very sad session. While I generally like Barkha's panels and sessions, this was very unsatisying. The discussion of the Nagarwala affair was stunted because the authors did not want to reveal too much so they could get people to read their book. The discussion could have been much deeper than it was in this session. I also think Barkha did not understand that one question that was raised by the individual who posited that "democracy" was the problem behind the corruption we see. Barkha responded as if he said that we need less democracy. His main point was that corruption was directly related to the financing of elections. In fact, he does have a point: both in the US and in India (and maybe many other democracies) a lot fo the corruption is the need to finance election wind: whether from PAC, SuperPACs in the US, from electoral bonds and/or under-the-table financing of party spending on elections. (I think he was slightly off when referring tot he Citizens United case in the US.) If instead of his unfortunate wording, he had used "election financing" I suspect Barkha would not have construed his comment/question the way she did, and probably agreed with his observation.
