The Mongol Empire undoubtedly had one of the most accomplished armies in history. This video focuses on a few of their lowest points, so it should be noted that the mongols achieved a greatly disproportionate ratio of victories. What do you believe was their greatest victory against the odds and greatest defeat?
Their greatest victory would have to be the Battle of Kalka 1223. But what was even more admirable was the extensive campaign of Jebe and Subutai which took place in the build up to the battle. The Mongol commanders entered enemy, hostile and unfamiliar territory, defeated new and never before encountered enemies. They used espionage, sabotage, diplomacy, military intelligence, discipline and operational and tactical brilliance to achieve what they did. They defeated the Georgians, the Rus Princes and the Kipchaks and other nomadic tribes individually and altogether. They survived in the Caucases, Eastern Europe and went back all the more informed and educated about their enemies.
As an Indonesian, I admire our vietnamese neighbour. We always had advantage because mongols had to cross the sea to get us which is why no javanese king ever view them seriously, especially after Majapahit was born and naval army was created. (One of the reason the mongols hastily retreated was because the wind changed with season, if they didn't get the hell outta Java quickly, they'd be trapped in a hostile territory, which was a part of Raden Wijaya's plot.) Vietnam, on the other hand, was so close to the mongols and they put up a great fight. Props to them.

Mongols arent good in guerilla war, like what they have gone thru in Vietnam. They arent good with naval battle like what they witness in Japan. But they must do both of that again on far away jungle on an island without knowing whose the ally and the enemy. The result is easy to guess. Hi there, for the Vietnamese history portion: the capital of Đại Việt was Thăng Long. It was not renamed to Hà Nội until Nguyen's Dynasty when the Nguyen Emperor moved to the capital to Huệ.
The Dai Viet was very prosperous during the first Mongolian invasion, and they were confident enough to face Mongolians in an open battle field. We learnt a hard lesson that our elephants were no match for Mongolians calvary archers. After that, we knew that only guerillas warfare would be efficient against such powerful army.
Horse archers use a compound bow which does not work in humid climates where the different parts of the bow separate due to humidity. To invade Vietnam, the Mongols probably used their Han soldiers armed in their traditional way rather than Horse Archers.
Not just open battle but war elephants used by Indian empires since last 5000 years for logistics, seige, transportation, clearing of forests, timber, and full frontal assault. A team of 100 war elephants in armor, pumped with opium (so they can feel no pain) can create havoc against cavalry. The Indian campaigns of Mongols were always disastrous due to weather and the destruction of grazing lands by the locals - cavalry has no feed.
The Mongols never lost a general in any battlefield. However, in Vietnam battlefields, the Mongols lost at least 9 generals either KIA or captured, no more excuses.
During invasion of rus, moguls lost Kulhan, son of Genghis khan. During battle with bulgars, moguls lost Jebe one of the 4 greatest commanders of Temujin.

As an Indonesian, I admire our vietnamese neighbour. We always had advantage because mongols had to cross the sea to get us which is why no javanese king ever view them seriously, especially after Majapahit was born and naval army was created. (One of the reason the mongols hastily retreated was because the wind changed with season, if they didn't get the hell outta Java quickly, they'd be trapped in a hostile territory, which was a part of Raden Wijaya's plot.)
Vietnam, on the other hand, was so close to the mongols and they put up a great fight. Props to them.

We indonesians better be pragmatic. Why rely on might alone when there are other means?
no, Game of Throne is actually inspired by this history.
I had never heard of what had happened to the Mongols in Indonesia. That was slick.
Lol, yeah. We aren't often heard in global theater.
But, yes. We played Game of Thrones style with Mongols as one of the player. Sweet talk and warm smiles with really good deals to lure them up to the traps. When they see how stupid these games are, they decided to retreat.
Understandably, a force that always do a simple open war with horses, suddenly must do politics among various kingdoms and each their soldiers that specializing in jungle warfare and naval fleets.
Mongols arent good in guerilla war, like what they have gone thru in Vietnam. They arent good with naval battle like what they witness in Japan. But they must do both of that again on far away jungle on an island without knowing whose the ally and the enemy. The result is easy to guess.
I mean, even now, the latest writing about Mongol is our grateful for their intervention. Which is a totally different tone than what those Mongol actually feels. I'm sure as hell another Mongol envoy would be lullabied with warm welcome and nice words, should they came here again back then.
Oh yeah, one of our ancient kingdom here do the "Red Wedding" to its neighbor couple centuries after Mongol gone. Just like GoT.
Should do it like the Dutch. Dont try to conquer these slippery poisonous jungle snakes. Let them keep doing their games between each of them and let them bite each other themselves. That way, Dutch managed to stay profitable for centuries.
Don't worry tho. We no longer like that
The last war we had was basically kicking colonizer out by flipping two super powers on our side. Making U.S.A go against Dutch diplomatically, while at the same time we getting new weapons from Soviet. Our envoy is like those priest units in Civilization game that just "wololo" people into our side.
We also being neutral now. Our diplomats managed to get many military exercises with U.S.A while also heavily trading with China. We are big part of ASEAN in South East Asia. Global geopolitic players didn't gets threatened by our existence. Its hard to gets threatened by something that you dont know exist. While all the existence of us globally known are just Bali island and the smiles our people have on it.
I don't know how we good at it. Maybe we have a really good smile.
As an Indonesian, I confirm this story and the term
"Use foreign aid to defeat rivals, and then wipe em. " was also used several times too during the dutch colonial period. One kingdom make ally with the dutch to wipe neighboring rival kingdoms, and then wipe the dutch from the land.
its normal day in Indonesia now :v
But didn't the Dutch ultimately colonize Indonesia though? Rulers could try this tactic over and over of stabbing your allies in the back but you'll soon make enemies and get conquered yourself.

And always has been
Guerilla / terror always efficient when face to face become imbalance
@@Kul-tegin The innovation was to use Han soldiers who knew the conditions. Mongols were not ego bound idiots who had to always take the lead.
