- Yanmar 3YM20 Raw Water Pump Water Seal Replacement.
I discovered water leaking from the raw water pump and decided to replace it which was an easy but expensive option.
I decided to service the old pump myself to keep as a spare. This involved thoroughly cleaning up the old pump and replacing the bearings and seals. The old bearings looked sound so a new water seal would have solved the leak. I couldn’t find any information on line on how to remove the water seal which I discovered can be done from the front without having to dismantle the pump. The video shows how. In future I will renew the water seal along with the impeller.
What a great lesson! Thanks for your time mate, kind regards from Peter Bennett (The Gippsland Lakes, Victoria, Australia.)
Great tip with the bent piece of wire - I used a coat hanger and it made getting the seal out really easy. Thanks!
Thank you Allen for making this video I have replace my water seal on my 3YM20 once a couple of seasons ago. I looked to you tube for a refresher can across your channel, I will make my self a tool and have ago, it will save me quite a bit of time than removing the Pump. Safe sailing Simon Carter From Brisbane Australia.
OMG! So simple... Thank you! I thought I had to disassemble the whole pump until I saw your video.
Just what I needed. Good camera work, good narrative. You're good. Thanks
Thank You very much, you just save my vocation
Great stuff - thanks! Was difficult to get the new seal in but we got there in the end!
I ruined one seal trying to poke it in. 2nd time I pressed it home by tightening the cover plate onto the impeller.
The seal pushed in easily just using my finger.
Very helpful, thanks
Thanks.
From experience I have found cheaper ones not to last that long. Genuine Yanmar ones have s.steal spring o-ring inside the seal, but after market ones dont so rust in no time.
In NZ after market seal suppliers will replace that metal o-ring with a high grade rubber one for marine use, so no metal bits at all.
Because its not a big cost I would stick with Yanmar supplied one.
I agree, it's safer to stick with original parts so I'll check the water seal spring next time I replace the impeller. I posted this video because I didn't realise that I could replace the water seal without having to dismantle the entire pump and thought that it might be helpful to others.
Yes it is helpful thanks. I was looking at doing a total recon of the pump but then realised bearings and shaft were in good condition so will just replace the seal which I picked up yesterday from a general seal supplier because Yanmar were not able to supply one. The supplier replaced the metal o-ring with rubber after I told him it was for marine use. That plus the additional o-ring that sits on the shaft, below the seal came to less than $5 NZ!!
Upon inspection I realised the bearings were worn on my pump, so I did a full recon, have included some tips and part numbers on a new video I have published, hope its helps someone.
Great. You should add in you description that it’s the same for the 2YM15 and 3YM30 to make it easier to find.
Also if you could provide a description of how you found the seal on eBay. Pretty sure I just paid like $30 for one seal.
Super
Hi Alan, thank you for this very insightful video! You mention an O-ring that need to be moved below the water seal. I reckon this will be hard to do in situ? I can barely see anything at the back of mine (3ym20), but fiddling the seal out could be done. Does the O-ring need moving?
Great video! Thanks for sharing 👏🏻 Did you put any grease on the water seal when putting it back around the shaft? If so, could you please tell which kind did you use? Thanks in advance!
I used silicone grease when assembling.
@@alancarter9769 thank you!
Would you be able to post a link to where you bought the water seal and the bearings on ebay? I can't seem to find them for the price you mentioned.

Thanks for posting. For whatever reason, these bearings are a lot more expensive in the US so it may make sense for me to have them shipped from the UK
you didn't actually put the new seal in - how do you get it into the seat???
Putting the seal in is easy. Look at 4.00 minutes into the video. It just pressed in with a finger.
Liam nesson is it you?
