My guess is your old stock was originally stained with Nitric Acid. (Also called Aqua fortis). That was the traditional gun stock stain used in the 18th and 19th century. It’s easy to use and it’s beautiful when done correctly. You can buy it at a very reasonable price at Track of the Wolf or Log Cabin Shop. Good luck to you. Don’t let the word “acid” frighten you from trying it. The product you will buy is a very mild solution.

Next one of your bills that you have like this or repairs use rubber bands you know the surgical kind they work really good for doing these kind of repairs I've done it before wrap it around and you can go around the butt and come up to the front of the gun and I made a little pouch with the rubber bands on like a slingshot and put it over the end of the stock and it kind of pulls everything together and then just rubber band it right in the center

I keep a roll of surgical tubing on hand for the purpose. Thanks for sharing a great technique!
