Rich you ain't the only one having crossbow problems. I had problems with lumenoks breaking this year and anouther brand of lighted nocks breaking. So I'm not shooting any lighted nocks this year, I will revisit it next year. Happy hunting good luck
You speak of our responsibility of taking does. If I failed to not harvest at least a couple of does per season the landowner would look for someone else to hunt their land. They have so much crop damage every year from both deer and turkeys it is a necessity. I am so fortunate to have a terrific place to hunt and have taken 2 does and 1 buck each of the last 2 years. Thanks again for the guidance and tips you have provided us over the years!
I hunt 5B here in PA, and haven’t had success yet for 3 seasons since I first saw your channel and was inspired to crossbow hunt. Opening day is Oct 5th hoping for a great season, stay safe and love the VLogs.
I just watched a video from draggin deer outdoors and he gave a lot of praise to you on your video of breaking limbs it’s nice to be subscribed to people who know what they are talking about have done the research and that i can learn from keep up the good work
I chose a mag 340 after watching all these videos. 315ish with a 400grain arrow. That's plenty for me. And my bow won't break, I can even use those lighted nocks😊
My cousin had a ravin, and it blew out 3 different strings, and he was using the ravin bolts and nocks. My guess is the nock is not the problem with the ravin. The local bow shop quit selling ravin because they was working on them so much.
Rich, you should come to Indiana if you want to shoot does. You dont need bait or a treestand. You just find a trail between bedding area, aka a swamp, and get the wind in your face. You dont need a treestand to climb or to fall out of. You will be in the woods, it will be thick, and your shot will be short. You will be hunting. You will not need to worry about your smell because you will be a hunter, and you understand the wind is your friend, not foe. After you acomplish this, you will realize that the same thing can be done with a long bow or recurve that shoots 150 fps. If you do that, you consider yourself a hunter and an archer. You will fully awaken your connection to the past, and who you really are, and want to be once again. Or maybe not. Love the vids.
I am eating my own words.I just bought a brand new Tenpoint Viper S415...Zombie slayer with 150 grain Sevr broad head..Total is 505 grains. The cocking and De-cocking is a game changer.Keep up the great videos.
I love the content you put out. It’s really helped me get better at using my crossbow. I put two down today a small five point buck and a dough using Swacker broadhead that you recommended.
450+ FPS is getting into the "self destruct" territory of crossbows. Most of mine are in that 370 - 425 FPS area and I don't have any problems. Those ultra high speed crossbows are hard on limbs, cams, servings and strings. They are often pretty loud and ruin/trash practice backstops prematurely as well.
When you get the Ravin back and shoot a little heavier arrow at a speed of around 425 to 435 FPS, That’s tried and true! And at that speed you should easily be able to shoot between 40 and 50 yards no problem at all with the right circumstances!
I kind of believe this in the area I hunt I can tell people hung cameras and have been out there because the deer changed trails. And I directly relate it to trail cams. I had a buck on cam two times he saw my camera and moved 15 yards on another trail.
I hunt with both a vertical bow as well as crossbows. I have an older excaliber as well as a newer low end Barnnet. Everything I shoot is slow in comparison to new more modern crossbows. For me it's just habit to aim low towards the front of the vitals, and it works well. That said I will still end up hitting animals higher than I want from time to time. Animals move constantly and hitting where you want is tough! What with human error and animal movement, I think speed can defiantly help, along with lots of practice and know the animals you hunt. Love the channel and your content!
We recently planted our green fields and just threw out the fertilizer and the 7 way seed (not wax seed) but we didn’t drag it, in your opinion does it matter if it is dragged ?
The differences in time at 30 yards is less than a blink of the eye. Hard to believe and understand but true. It's so easy just to aim low and a touch forward. You can't solve the problem with more speed. But if it gives you confidence , it's not a bad thing. I think 350 fps with a heavy arrow, in a durable bow would be ideal. In looking at the Rev X.

My good man, you are consumed with passion. The difference between 300 fps and 400 fps at 30 yards is less than a blink of an eye. Literally, look it up. You bark up the wrong tree, in a very entertaining way, I would add. I try to help if I may. Remember does are the fastest, and will drop at least 50 percent of the time at your feeders. Just aim lower, and remember they not only drop but move forward and away. You can hit the heart and both lungs if you would only aim lower. Stop being amazed that deer drop to push off and away from you at the shot. Your acting like a defense attorney. Love the content.
The difference is that at 300 fps, a arrow travels about 20 yards. A deers reaction time is about .2 seconds. The time it takes a 300 fps arrow to get to 20. Shooting a faster bow will benefit you and extend your range for an effective shot. Placement is important but you have to know your equipments limitations. 33% more fps will improve those limitations.

That was a nice dark antler buck , I hope you get a crack at it. Good call on heading back home and bringing a faster crossbow, we all owe it to the deer to use the best tool for the job. Your daughter not hunting with you this year?
I enjoy death by bunjie. I love my Barnett crossbow. Sound is 767 MPH, and a modern crossbow is 400ish. No matter how fast the arrow is, sound is faster. Instead of trading the 20-yard shot for the 30-yard shot, I have decided to go with a heavier 150-grain tooth of the arrow fixed-blade broadhead. Crossbow power and speed plus a heavier arrow with better penetration is killer. A heavier arrow is also easier on the life of my crossbow. #BigBuckInTheTruck2024

What do you think about the HECS hunting suit? It's old technology but people are still using it to this day and swear by it. I've seen videos of animal behavior when the person is wearing it and I don't know how convinced I am that it is effective. I'm more towards the fact that it does work more than the fact that it doesn't though. I would love to know your thoughts on this. Thanks Rich.
Scent elimination is a pipe dream. Scent reduction, thats a different story. If you are upwind of a deer they are going to wind you. That much is certain. That being said, deer are great at knowing how far away you are by your scent cone. Years ago I rifle hunted a farm with large mature timber. I used a climbing tree stand and would get up a minimum of 25ft. I have watched deer that winded me 200 yds downwind and then half circled and ended up right under my stand. They would misjudge how far away I was. I think scent control works similarly. But if you think you are going to eliminate scent to the point that deer won't detect you at all..... outside of an airtight blind, you are fooling yourself.
Makes me wonder just how I managed to kill dozens and dozens of deer with a 240 fps, very quiet shooting compound, and a 160 fps recurve, out to 25 yards. They never ducked the arrow, not once, because thay never heard it coming. I have confidence that one day crossbow manufacturers will put less emphesis on speed to gain distance, and develope a quieter shooting crossbow. Love your channel, keep up the good info.
Deer do calculus in their spare time, what are you talking? Mines only 360 with fast arrows. With good heavy ones it is too slow for longer shots, i really don't wanna drop 1k on a new xbow
@@taylorharbin3948 would be with weak light arrows. Im a fixed head guy, im a public hunter and i don't have the trigger discipline for the perfect angle for the whole 3 seconds you have a shot. Stropped sirius heads and can even drop em with a bad angle
Deer get educated. Especially if other hunters aren’t careful and show them where the stand is. Generationally if you kill at that feeder year after year I think the herd learns stuff. Food is still a strong attraction though
I'm interested in your hunting location. Lifelong Maryland resident and deer hunter. Based on the terrain in your videos, I can tell that you are hunting near me. We are overrun with deer, crop damage is terrible, and I could use you on my farm. Too many trophy hunters around here. Just sayin...
I have to give Swhacker credit. If you go on the website and read about their Broadheads, they will tell you in plain English that their heads are exactly the same whether they’re marked crossbow or not. That was marketing from different vendors because they wanted to offer a crossbow head along with a regular head. So there is absolutely no difference other than color. No more spines Rich!!! I have to admit I was going to sell my X1 because I have much faster bows but the more I shot it the more I loved it and it’s not going anywhere! None of my bows are as comfortably accurate as that bow Does that make sense? Comfortable? It’s just how I feel when I shoot that bow because it is so smooth.
2024 Rich “ I didn’t follow the manufacturer’s recommendations” old school Rich “Always follow the manufacturer recommendations” Maybe every change/evolution isn’t worth it.
I hope I didn’t freek you out about the X1 trigger. Lol. Mine rattles since I got it. Or was there a problem? I’m planning on taking mine out tomorrow morning for opening day of the regular season.
@@stevenhicks815 yeah. That trigger should be better. I saw a video on that. They took it apart and install couple tiny rubber o-rings to tighten up the trigger rattle. It as long as it doesn’t fail I can live with the rattle.
Most of the deer we shoot that react enough to cause a bad shot probably already were in edge anyway I don't think the 50 FPS more will help enough. I been compound bow hunting for many years and realized why the deer are reacting so fast. Hunting with a little faster crossbow didn't help me in my experience the best thing to do if try to go undetected mostly all the deer that jumped the string on either weapon were on edge to begin with. Watch your last video that doe knew you were there she knows the stand is there and was on edge anyway try changing your location instead. Move from the stand even if you have to play it on the ground. Goodluck to you and safe hunting 😢
Ehh, I say it’s ravin’s fault 💯. It’s a crossbow right? That means it should 💯 be universal to use any and every bolt made for crossbows. The only thing that should matter is the same in archery and that is spine and weight. If you have to use brand specific gear and equipment than there is a problem with that brand. Not sorry for saying so but that’s just excuses by the company because they don’t want to take the responsibility.
Just food for thought and how I hunt a food source. Don't hunt on the feeder itself, but hunt the deer's trail to or from the feeder. Then you don't alert the deer to the feeder being a place of danger, they may change trails that they use to come to and from the feeder but will not stop coming to feed.
Damn man, what's all the hoblob, BS about. Pic a damn crossbow. Practice with it, become one with it, and just go hunting, enjoy your time in solitude. Next time bring two different crossbows. That's what I do. Each one is set up for different type of tactics. Damn, ur supposed to be Joe crossbow. I don't get it. Just get out there and enjoy yourself, will you! Agree with the KI. Should have brought it the first time. Always take two.😮😊
@@robinbigler225 not saying I really respect them at all....They (most I've encountered) have no respect for other people when it comes to hunting....I've had them threaten me,put stands within 50yards of me and they even built a huge shooting house close to a stand....one time during firearms season i had the same group of like 10 guys/kids walk by me probably a dozen times pushing in one day!!! The next iteration of your evolution will be to just skip crossbows all together. You will need the energy and the power of a muzzleloader to effectively hunt. Then a few years later it will be rifles only. The idea that that a compound bow isn't lethal enough is hilarious. A skilled shooter can make Lethal shots all day long at 40 yards with a compound. Of course we're having shot placement and penetration issues at 30 yards- have you seen these ridiculous 3" + broadheads people are screwing on now adays? Rich, it's time to broaden your horizons. If you like the tuning and intricacies of crossbow hunting you really should try muzzleloading or even compound bows. Muzzleloading is the exact same process of loading and tuning etc and is very affordable.
No to mention much reliable, When you get past 300-350 feet per second your into the territory of what's just barley mechanically possible. Which is why all these high speed crossbows can't keep limbs and strings on. Terrible hunting weapons
Rich, this is the second time you have disappointed me. The first was when you went on a bear hunt and left the Skorpid at home and chose to drag the OB on the bear hunt. Now you make the trip to Maryland and leave the modern bows at home. Love your information, and follow you religiously, but retire the OB! Or donate it to a crossbow museum!

Hecs is not scent control.
There is something to it, I'm not sure it makes an awful lot of difference but there is definitely something to it.
@@Deathbybunjie I'm with you on that.
Everybody gets skunned once in a while. I'm looking to get out tomorrow afternoon. Hope for the best.
Good luck!!
Volume is real! But, so is speed.
Get a 420 assassin. I take game from 60+ yards with ease. As loud as the bow is, the deer can’t drop fast enough.😁
What part of MD are ya in?
deer around me in ny arent super jumpy like that also just get better at getting closer
Or shoot a modern crossbow lol
Are you still going to use the slick black Cadillac?
Now and then and I do discuss that in some of these videos
The deer at the feeder look very thin
Part of that is the time of year I think but part of that it could also be that there are just far too many deer here
Deer do calculus in their spare time, what are you talking? Mines only 360 with fast arrows. With good heavy ones it is too slow for longer shots, i really don't wanna drop 1k on a new xbow
Same.. not dropping a grand on a new crossbow.. no thanks.
360 should be fine.
@@taylorharbin3948 would be with weak light arrows. Im a fixed head guy, im a public hunter and i don't have the trigger discipline for the perfect angle for the whole 3 seconds you have a shot. Stropped sirius heads and can even drop em with a bad angle
You don't have to spend 1k on a crossbow to get something fast. The Wrath 430 can be had for under $500.
@@JW-bw8nj yeah theres options, i was gonna get a wrath but my local shop doesn't carry it.
Tons and tons of does LOL
why do you not shoot your Scorpyd bow anymore?
I do from time to time but personally I just really like the SWAT X1
Unfortunately I would have replaced the slower crossbow after the first 2 spine shots but I know loyalty has the better of a lot of people.
Just a hard lesson for me to learn but I'm right there with you
I have to give Swhacker credit.
None of my bows are as comfortably accurate as that bow
Does that make sense? Comfortable? It’s just how I feel when I shoot that bow because it is so smooth.
Yep 💯
Hey, isn't that OEA's (one-eyed archer) crossbow at the end of the video? Does he know you "borrowed" it?
He has his own
@@jonathanyates5198 Nope....that is OEA's. Let's hear what Rich has to say. Richs' is out of service currently.
2024 Rich “ I didn’t follow the manufacturer’s recommendations” old school Rich “Always follow the manufacturer recommendations” Maybe every change/evolution isn’t worth it.
😆
Use Firenocks on the Slick Black Cadillac
I hope I didn’t freek you out about the X1 trigger. Lol. Mine rattles since I got it. Or was there a problem? I’m planning on taking mine out tomorrow morning for opening day of the regular season.
Mine rattles if you shake the bow too on trigger but shooting good so far we will see
@@stevenhicks815 yeah. Mine shoots fine also.
@@georgekeith7969 I think it is nuts the way they are built
@@stevenhicks815 yeah. That trigger should be better. I saw a video on that. They took it apart and install couple tiny rubber o-rings to tighten up the trigger rattle. It as long as it doesn’t fail I can live with the rattle.
@@georgekeith7969 some of it doesn’t fail I am good with it too
Most of the deer we shoot that react enough to cause a bad shot probably already were in edge anyway I don't think the 50 FPS more will help enough.
It makes a world if difference trust me
Got a buck today bunje
Cool congratulations!
i always had this saying of mine and it goes like this. we’re human we’re meant to learn and evolve once that stops we’re just barbarians!
100
My excalibur exomax is from 2010. 350 fps and i can cock it by hand for a quick second shot.
After you get used to and shoot the ravin you will get used to the noise of it
Likely agree. It is a neat piece of equipment
💕👍
Why not just go buy a new 2024 Excalibur crossbow
Hi Rich
Just food for thought and how I hunt a food source. Don't hunt on the feeder itself, but hunt the deer's trail to or from the feeder. Then you don't alert the deer to the feeder being a place of danger, they may change trails that they use to come to and from the feeder but will not stop coming to feed.
I'm hunting with a guide, they set up. Been doing this for over a decade like this, tons of success. I do like your point though 💯
Blaming the equipment is always a good excuse.
It's more frustration on my part having hunted with that crossbow for 15 years now
I like your videos and you but personally I would not hunt deer over bait.
That's fine by me.
Venison inflation.
Always take two.😮😊
Calm down and keep watching LOL
Not Amish. 😂 Where I hunt in PA there is a lot of Amish and ive seen them with $2k+ xbows and $1k compounds with 3 or $400 climbers....Lol
Me also see Amish with all that stuff . The ones that hunt close to me, they also have smartphones. They will see this.
They tear down posted signs and trespass randomly....Shoot and don't tag deer alot
@robertstreams4362 One of the areas where I used to hunt, they came in and put on a huge drive, no blaze orange and the drivers had 30 guys pushing, don't know how many watchers. They took out a ridge that was 4.5 miles long, through posted ground, I was on the opposite ridge and it sounded like a war. I never went back there again.
@@robinbigler225 yeah I haven't gun hunted in PA (there ) in over 15 years cause of them.... nothing but Xbow there nowadays and hardly ever see many people during archery season
I can honestly say, this is somewhat getting out of control, but it’s controlled chaos and I love it. All hail Bunjie or whomever lol
If what you say is true, we should not be able to kill deer with vertical bows anymore let alone a longbow or recurve.
Not exactly. If what I say is true, then you should not try to kill deer with vertical bows anymore. Instead, you should use a modern crossbow.
Ummmmmm
That's kinda the point of these videos 😆
