100% agree on the popup blind. Trudging through the cold dark woods in the AM and get into your blind, it's cozy, out of the frigid wind & elements, etc. Spread out all of your gear so everything is in arm's reach. No worries about being seen moving, little worry about scent, zero worries about getting snowed or rained on. Love the ground blinds. 👍
I've had good success with a ghillie suit sitting on my bum, just inside the edge of the brush on the ground with a trigger stick. I've had fawns be-bopping around right in front of me within feet and have no idea. Lately, though the spots I've been hunting have seen a lot of yotes; and I've had a handful of them come within 20-30 yards of me. So there's that too. The 10mm sits in the thigh rig for just such an occasion.
You NEED either a lifeline, or a lineman's belt (preferably both) to go with your harness so that you can be safe from the ground up. I heard you say something about an attachment point once you are up there, but you NEED to be safe anytime you are off the ground. Signed, Slow learner, 4 time faller, now safe or nothing

I appreciate my Viper because I can scout an area, see trees near trails and go back without anyone or any deer knowing I’m up there. I haven't always been a crossbow guy. I used a compound bow, but hurt my shoulder in 2020 so I bought a crossbow. My shoulder is 100% now and I still prefer to hunt with my crossbow. There are so many benefits for being in a tree. I have "rut funnel" stands that I set up ahead of the hunting season but I tend to hunt with a mobile setup to maximize results by hunting current deer sign and activity throughout the season. My mobile setup is 3 Muddy sticks and a saddle or my Lone Wolf Alpha 2. My preference is my Alpha 2 hang on for mobile hunting.
I stand hunted for decades. Then a stroke in 2019 put an end to climbing. Since then I have been restricted to ground level hunting. But we play the hand we’re dealt.
The Doctor's orders are "eh"...The Wife's order's are stamped in stone!! LOL So many options. It becomes preference and of course, situational. I'm a tree climber guy...now. For a long time I didn't feel comfortable, but I would stick climb in a heartbeat. It was me, it wasn't the system or whatever. Thats my mobile setup on the properties now. I have a couple of ladder stands out. We have some box stands, but I love hunting from my tree climber. With my Rifle, Compound bow and/or my Crossbow. I try to get at least one harvest with each. Doesn't always happen that way, but yeah.

If someone, somewhere, whoever it may be could come up with a portable and effective way to ground hunt. Well. You would be sitting on a pile of cash and a great business idea. Sometimes I wonder if it’s not possible or just everyone is happy with treestands and not interested? The statistics say that 1 in 20 will get seriously hurt in a treestand accident though. That is unacceptable. I’m excited to see you take on more ground hunting on PA public. If you come up with a method here that works you can take that show on the road anywhere.
I have crossbow hunted from a saddle for 3 seasons now and have killed deer. The first year seemed so awkward and hard to manage. I use flat daisy chain strapping form old climbing sticks to tether high and around the tree. This tether goes around the pistol grip of my crossbow to steady it up and down. It works great. I've never seen this done. I will be going out this season with a CP 400. Its low profile should help when shooting from around trees.
Ive used the Ghost Blind many times and been successful (crossbow). You can shoot through those "notches" you mentioned. Now, you gotta be cognizant of where your arrow is in relation to that bottom/ sides of those notches...ask me how i know 😂😂😂
Your mention of the climber… you need to use straps or a rope to lock the top to the bottom. The video you shared going up and down with the climber there was a lot of a pitch upwards. You need to level that out more and attach with strap or I use paracord… so when you stand, it pulls down on the front of the top section. It will go no where. It really locks in. Just fyi
Great video. The most important thing with blinds is setting them up with some back cover and also setting them up a few months in advance to allow the deer to get used to them. I also like brushing them in as I feel it gives more of an effect of a fallen tree. And with a climber stand, I tie the top part to the bottom with para cord and usually only go about 12 feet up. I've shot good buck during the rut 4 foot off the ground.
Nice tips. Minnesota opened up crossbows to all ages last year. I got a doe early on and a nice 5x5 buck on the last day of the season, both just sitting on the ground in my stubby low chair with a backrest. Just tucking back against fallen timber or brush and staying still.
I’m going to be interested how you like the loc on deal. I have always used ladders and especially climbers here in the south but our trees are straight. Climbers don’t seem to be a great option in Illinois. I have never set up a loc on but have hunted out of a couple and they sat great.
I hear ya Rich, got Poison Ivy last year, very bad reaction, face swelled up and everything. Ended up at the hospital. Killed my "rutcation" in the rut of November. Hoping it goes better this season.
Every time I go out in the woods I wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt , not caring how hot it is just so I don’t get ticks or poison ivy on me or anything else. If not I am just asking for something and I am not willing to take the chance.
Hunting from the ground is just the way I was taught to hunt. Not very fond of heights. I feel like it’s a pretty big thrill to have them right in front of you and on eye level with them..

Would have not of found it but the deer ran past the arrow and expired just past arrow.. never seen anything like it. Could only imagine if I went with a heavy set up like the rest of the crowd.. only 415 grains total..
Vital X 430 if that's the option, but if it's the original Vital X then I'd go revX? Vital X and the Vital X 430 are two different classes of crossbow IMO
I bought a ghost blind last year and shot 2 from the ground. You can really turn invisible if you use it properly. You still need to know when to move just like anything but I shot my crossbow between the slots. I used to hunt a lot on the ground as it is a whole set of different challenges & excitement. I also use a lock on and saddle for mobility. I know the prices can get high but it is a major differnce when you are talking about walking in with 15lbs total vs 25-30. Crossbows are still heavy especially with the Oracle so that is a challenge in itself. Is that worth a topic?

A good question! The answer is that I consider that battle to have been won. In states where crossbows are legal, crossbow hunters become the majority very quickly. For that reason, I don't feel the need whatsoever to tiptoe around and make sure that we don't offend the compound bow hunters. Instead, I am confident that crossbows are here to stay. Anybody who doesn't like crossbows needs to tread carefully. They need to realize they are hunting in our seasons, and not vice versa. I'm a crossbow hunter and proud of it. 😎
I have to laugh because I see more deer nowadays approaching the bait and stopping and looking up into a tree. They never use to do that but they are catching on. The good thing is they look up in that tree and I'm in the one over here. But those son of a guns are getting wise.

Summit viper or Goliath climber for me. I gave up lock-ons last year after having my stick turning sideways on me. Ive used lock-ons for 20+ years but 51 is not the new 30 when it comes to hanging lock-ons. Good luck and be careful

Built new blind last weekend dug a 3 by 3 ft hole 3 ft deep were my chest is showing just covered with debris. Pretty cool just worried about the spiders 🐍 lots of work but think in might be worth it. Can see anything from all directions. Love my climbers tho. All hail bunjie 🦌 🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌
Nicely done! Not sure if a concern in your area, but from experience: might want to consider putting down some ant/tick killer prior to the season. -Ticks love to “ambush us back” in low ground blinds. lol
I don’t blame you, Lime Disease has no cure (scary). I personally use a Permethrin treatment on my clothing, then a spray (or powder) for the area around your ground blind/fox hole with the poison you can get to treat your yard with for fleas/ticks, etc. I do this in-advance (a couple weeks) to treat the area, allow odor to disappear. I’m cautious to get the ground/grass treatment that is ppl and pet safe. I even treat around the ladder and base of my tree stands to prevent ant beds, spiders from bothering me. lol I’m in TX, and like many, the biting insects are no joke.

@andrewkoehler5386 I like to give my hunting clothes (boots included) a generous bath of permethrin a few days before hitting the woods. I find bug suits help, but aren't bulletproof. Then I hit it with some scent killer before I head in. Seems to work well (fingers crossed) so far.
I’ve been hunting in a lone wolf hand climber since 1999, this year I’m going to use my new lone wolf custom gear crossover climber! It’s only 11.5lbs and is 1 7/8 thick! I’m excited to get it into the woods.
I find shooting from a blind to be easy for myself. I have tried the ladder stands but found pointing down with the rail in front of me became an issue most the time. When I get in the blind with my bog tripod and a good chair I'm good to go. Great video.
I have a coupke of the XOP Evolution stands. They are awesome! So easy to carry and hang. You can also get a bracket for those that make them even easier to hang and can give you more options as far as mobility. Im loving your videos. Keep up the good work and good luck to you this season. 👍

@@Deathbybunjie since chlorine is a very stinky chemical and not much in the nature and very obvious for those with a sensitive nose for us humans a lot is needed for us to smell it. if animals are able to sense humans freshly washed and clothes wouldnt chlorine stink for them, even washing the body with non-chlorinated water since it attach itself to hair and skin, i used chlorinated water as a desinfectant during cvid and after 2 days i could still smell it on my hands. starting a 2-3 days before the hunt, a roll around in the forest dirt would also be good. and scents are heavier so those get close to the ground and stay there longer, does a sniffer dog run around with it nose up or close to the ground when looking for something. also take a quick look at the target shooter jackets to see what i mean those those thick-lethered heavy-butt very constrictive created for the purpose of assisting/stiffing up the body and adjustable as well for a good shooting position i allways considered them cheating even when i was target shooting 47 years ago
I love my 2 climbers I have. I do agree they’re not for everyone I hunt on private land so I can leave them on the tree I’m hunting out of or move them to a different location. All hail Bunjie!
Glad to see you’ll be expanding a lot of your crossbow hunting to state game lands this year Rich. It’s all I hunt here in Northeast Ohio and let me tell you things can get extremely tough, but it will absolutely make you a better hunter and when you do harvest one you’ll be much more appreciative of it. For those of us who don’t have access to private property most of the time you have to be at the top of your game whenever you find yourself on state game lands just because of the amount of pressure. Getting on deer in state land is an entirely different ballgame most of the time. I’ve went days without so much as seeing a deer and killing a mature doe is an extreme challenge more often than not. I’m not a rack hunter whatsoever because you can’t eat antlers, but don’t get me wrong here I will shoot a buck, and I have many times, but I’ll take the meat 🥩 no matter what it means thank you very much. To me there’s just something about putting in more work and going farther than the other guy who’s trying to accomplish the same exact thing that you are that sets it all apart. I’m not taking digs at people that hunt private property whatsoever either. If you’re blessed enough in your life that you have that option that’s an awesome thing. I'm blessed to be in a city program where I'm in the city limits, I exclusively use ladder stands, preferably 2 man, I'm able to recock much more easily, sometimes even with deer standing around, we have no limits or stipulations, just wackm and stackm, I like to be no less than 17ft, preferably 20

To be fair, I haven't been on a 2-man ladder stand. I've only been on a slat of metal strapped to a tree. NO CAN DO.
For the climber, stabilizer straps from Third Hand Archery are a must. They make the stand solid.

Check out the in-ground blinds. Pretty much digging a small pit for your legs so you sit lower to the ground. I’m trying it this year.

I have almost the same set up. I love it but my biggest issue is I get so hot and sweaty climbing up even in the winter!
Man I swear I would say most of my dead deer are with in 20 yards for sure. If not closer…

Not sure if a concern in your area, but from experience: might want to consider putting down some ant/tick killer prior to the season.
-Ticks love to “ambush us back” in low ground blinds. lol
So do I need to spray around the blind itself our just on .y hunting clothes thereself. Diffenley don't want lime germs.
I don’t blame you, Lime Disease has no cure (scary).
I personally use a Permethrin treatment on my clothing, then a spray (or powder) for the area around your ground blind/fox hole with the poison you can get to treat your yard with for fleas/ticks, etc.
I do this in-advance (a couple weeks) to treat the area, allow odor to disappear.
I’m cautious to get the ground/grass treatment that is ppl and pet safe.
I even treat around the ladder and base of my tree stands to prevent ant beds, spiders from bothering me. lol
I’m in TX, and like many, the biting insects are no joke.

@andrewkoehler5386 I like to give my hunting clothes (boots included) a generous bath of permethrin a few days before hitting the woods. I find bug suits help, but aren't bulletproof.
Then I hit it with some scent killer before I head in. Seems to work well (fingers crossed) so far.
Wait until you try a 2 man ladder stand with nylon seats. Very comfortable but way too heavy to put up by yourself.
My nephew uses those and says they are fantastic

I’ve been hunting in a lone wolf hand climber since 1999, this year I’m going to use my new lone wolf custom gear crossover climber! It’s only 11.5lbs and is 1 7/8 thick! I’m excited to get it into the woods.

I find shooting from a blind to be easy for myself. I have tried the ladder stands but found pointing down with the rail in front of me became an issue most the time. When I get in the blind with my bog tripod and a good chair I'm good to go. Great video.

I have a coupke of the XOP Evolution stands. They are awesome! So easy to carry and hang. You can also get a bracket for those that make them even easier to hang and can give you more options as far as mobility. Im loving your videos. Keep up the good work and good luck to you this season. 👍

Yes I've used Dragon Claws and some customs, lots of people used Zombies... big thing is the vanes and length in my opinion

just tip get that straight jacket that the rifle shooters got to get more stable one can barely move on those, i just remembered one thing have you tried washing clothes in non-chlorinated water ?
Never did anything with the water, is that a good plan I don't seem to have much trouble otherwise
@@Deathbybunjie since chlorine is a very stinky chemical and not much in the nature and very obvious for those with a sensitive nose for us humans a lot is needed for us to smell it. if animals are able to sense humans freshly washed and clothes wouldnt chlorine stink for them, even washing the body with non-chlorinated water since it attach itself to hair and skin, i used chlorinated water as a desinfectant during cvid and after 2 days i could still smell it on my hands. starting a 2-3 days before the hunt, a roll around in the forest dirt would also be good. and scents are heavier so those get close to the ground and stay there longer, does a sniffer dog run around with it nose up or close to the ground when looking for something. also take a quick look at the target shooter jackets to see what i mean those those thick-lethered heavy-butt very constrictive created for the purpose of assisting/stiffing up the body and adjustable as well for a good shooting position i allways considered them cheating even when i was target shooting 47 years ago

I have several of the xop stands but I use them as permanent hang on you will love them seat cusion is very comfortable
I love my 2 climbers I have. I do agree they’re not for everyone I hunt on private land so I can leave them on the tree I’m hunting out of or move them to a different location. All hail Bunjie!

Glad to see you’ll be expanding a lot of your crossbow hunting to state game lands this year Rich. It’s all I hunt here in Northeast Ohio and let me tell you things can get extremely tough, but it will absolutely make you a better hunter and when you do harvest one you’ll be much more appreciative of it. For those of us who don’t have access to private property most of the time you have to be at the top of your game whenever you find yourself on state game lands just because of the amount of pressure. Getting on deer in state land is an entirely different ballgame most of the time. I’ve went days without so much as seeing a deer and killing a mature doe is an extreme challenge more often than not. I’m not a rack hunter whatsoever because you can’t eat antlers, but don’t get me wrong here I will shoot a buck, and I have many times, but I’ll take the meat 🥩 no matter what it means thank you very much. To me there’s just something about putting in more work and going farther than the other guy who’s trying to accomplish the same exact thing that you are that sets it all apart. I’m not taking digs at people that hunt private property whatsoever either. If you’re blessed enough in your life that you have that option that’s an awesome thing. Really appreciate your videos, always get a little something. When you're away I look forward to when you're back. I hunt with bow, crossbow and rifle as well, but mostly with the crossbow. I'm blessed to be in a city program where I'm in the city limits, I exclusively use ladder stands, preferably 2 man, I'm able to recock much more easily, sometimes even with deer standing around, we have no limits or stipulations, just wackm and stackm, I like to be no less than 17ft, preferably 20

As someone who has severe breakouts with poison ivy, I feel your pain, and you learn tricks to get rid of it before a Dr visit. Great video. This is my first year as a crossbow hunter. Hoping to get plenty of deer this year
