  • Friends of Bunjie have been asking why we aren't using Rage any more...or are we?
Seriously, we love the Rages but these Swackers--wow! If you're into broadheads--and who isn't?--then you'll love this video.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it and I aim to help you love it, too!

Now, I am not sponsored by anyone. I am a free agent. I experiement with different types of gear, but I'll tell you my honest opinion about everything out there. I am not sponsored by Excalibur or Scorpyd...read on:
Bunjie (The O.B.) is a 2010 Excalibur Axiom Crossbow. After a decade of killing deer, hogs, squirrels--you name it!--with the "stock" 20" Easton Firebolt arrows, Bunjie experimented with heavy arrows during 2020 but has since decided to hunt with 20" ProFlight arrows from Easton, for a total arrow weight of just under 400 grains when tipped with a 100 grain Rage Crossbow Hypodermic Broadhead. This keeps ol' Bunjie around 300fps. Is Bunjie retired as of 2021?
Bunjie, Jr., is my daughter Genevieve's crossbow, an Excalibur Micro Suppressor 355. She also shoots ProFlights (16.5" variety) with a 150 grain Rage Trypan Crossbow Broadhead, for a total arrow weight around 415 grains. This crossbow was a much appreciated gift from a Friend of Bunjie, and it changed Death by Bunjie forever by inspiring Genevieve to become a part of it as a second-generation crossbow hunter, and it also convinced me there is a benefit to a newer, faster crossbow (see our 2020 Maryland Doe Hunt).
Bunjie III (or Bunjie '21, Bunjie 3.0) is a 2021 Scorpyd Deathstalker, the result of trying various models and looking at dozens of them online for characteristics I liked. It is, in fact, another gift from a different Friend of Bunjie, which goes to show how important Friends of Bunjie are to this channel and what an impact they can have. Although I really liked what I saw online, I would not have even tried a Scorpyd given that no shops near me carried them. This was sent to me new, free of charge...with the only stipulation being that if I didn't like it, I would send it back to that FOB. After spending some time with it, I am convinced it is, in fact, the right crossbow for me in 2021, and I look forward to showcasing this crossbow in future videos.
So, I am not sponsored by these companies. I am sponsored by Friends of Bunjie! (I'm not asking for gifts whatsoever--please don't feel like you should send me stuff! But I do appreciate the support I've received over the years! I'm just trying to express my appreciation for that.)
Once again, this channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester .30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The albums "Live Free or Kill" and "Zombies Gotta Eat, Too!" are available on Amazon.com and elsewhere. A third album is in the works.
    All Hail Bunjie!

I've been a Swhacker user for about 8 years now. I started using them when I was still able to shoot a compound bow. I now shoot a crossbow due to shoulder issues. I've bow hunted for almost 50 years now and have shot about every kind of broadhead on the market. These are the most reliable mechanical head in my opinion. They have 1 pivot point that makes them open versus something like a Rage that has to pivot but also slide in a slot to open. The cutting edge of the blades, that cause the internal damage are protected until they are inside the animal, not getting nicked, dulled or bent going in through a rib cage. I have one head that i have shot 3 deer with and all I've done is take the blades out, clean the slot and sharpen the blades. The blades can be easily replaced if needed or removed for sharpening with the removal of 1 screw. When they say it shoots like a field point, they do! I do not have to adjust my scope to shoot these. I've never had a deer go more than about 40yds after putting one of these through the lungs or heart. But any head should do that. (As long as they open properly!) This is just an old guy's 2 cents worth, take it or leave it. I like the phrase KISS, keep it simple stupid.

Not sure I am as old as you? But I switched for similar reasons, and my kids getting me back into it. Because they got me my first crossbow. Extremely thankful. Totally enjoy everything about bow season. Enjoy gun season too! But Bow holds a special place in my soul. Glad you're still out there winging it. Best to you😊

You got this absolutely correct. I have been using the 2" 100-grain Swhacker for a couple of seasons. I was going to try to switch to Rage Hypodermic and I discovered that one of them would not stay shut even with a new collar. I went back to the Swhacker and promptly took down a seven-point buck. Now the only decision I have left is to stay with the 2" or go to 3". Keep up the great work, Rich.

I fell in love with Swhackers when they first came out, and I still have several in different grains. That said, with as powerful as bows and crossbows are now, a rear deploying broadhead isn't bad. I've been using Sevrs for the past 2 years and love them as well.

I was giving you crap about the pigs. But I have made recent decisions about getting into crossbows based off of your coherent, reasoned arguments. Not because you “use” the items you advocate. But because you give clear representations and examples. And I, having a mechanical interest and background, truly appreciate your information.

I agree that finding a hybrid that will cut at least a 1” cut even if it fails to open. The Muzzy Trocar HBX have two 1” fixed blades and two folding blades that cut 2 5/8” when opened. But if they fail to open there are the two fixed blades cutting.

A couple of weeks ago I bought my first crossbow. A recent minor surgery meant I should not be drawing my compound. The salesclerk (he knew less than me, which isn't much) showed me where the broadheads were hanging. I read all the packages. With no further guidance available to me, I chose the Shwuh Hackers (proper pronunciation) based SOLELY on the pretty packaging! Glad I did. You have left me feeling informed and confident with my gear. Great vdo. Keep em coming.

Great job Rich and you present a powerful case conselor, but I'm sure the jury is still out, because hunters are divided, and so this debate is likely to continue. And as far as Rich Wilson is concerned, the RAGE are no longer all the RAGE, it's been replace by the SWAHACKER! You're both having a great season, and I'm so envious, but next year we might switch bows and arrows too!

I was shooting a2 inch rage 2 blade but recently switched to a g5 megsmeat 3 blade 2 inch cut and they leave big wound channels. They cut on entry but also penetrate completely. One disadvantage to mechanicals are the blades are one shot and done and cannot be resharpened after smashing into the dirt, even replace my blades are pricy. Watched your Maryland videos and there’s no denying those 3 inch SPEAR exit holes are super impressive.

The most notable thing about swhackers is how well they spin test. EVERY SINGLE ONE, spins true. Not a speck of wobble, and considering their fairly long overall length, that's impressive. Another nice thing about them, once you've sighted in with the practice blades, you can sharpen the blades and use them for small game. They work great for groundhogs.

Try the grim Reaper Whitetail hunter Broadhead . 100 gr they open to 3 “ the trick is to find a one half inch malt straw and cut about 1/8 inch off the end and band it . That keeps it from opening in flight . When they hit its like a bomb go’s off . They remind me if randbow . Gets the gallon per 100 feet down or GPF down considerably . Not related, exactly to crossbow hunting. But one rifle season, I shot two 8 pointers, few days apart, both were heart shots. One ran 75 yds. The other about 125. When I feel dressed them, there was nothing but mush for hearts. The will of the deer, is probably on matched. Or maybe every wild animal? How they could go that far without a heart, absolutely blew my mind! Something I always think about, every shot I take, now!🙆🤷

I just ordered these to replace my Rage Trypans. Just like you mentioned about the back tab that sticks out the opposite side, therefore hindering the penetration. Yes, I have experienced this twice, and knowing I made a good shot, but the resulting blood trail was pitiful at best, and resulted in the loss of two arrows and broadheads. That's just over $80 blown, and no deer to show for it.

I used the 3” Shwacker out of my Micro 335 last year (stock quil arrows). Worked great on my 3 does, but hit a decent buck, and watched him run off with my arrow, and never recovered him. (I think he ducked and I caught the shoulder, and the Shwacker locked up trying to penetrate the bone, as best I can guess). I switched to a 150 grain Magnus 4 blade broadheads this year, and 530 grain projectiles with Spynal Tapp arrows. I’ve shot 3 deer so far, and all have gone under 60 yards, with two complete pass throughs, and the one that didn’t poked through the far shoulder, and she dropped in sight piling up in 40 yards.

Thought I heart punched him with the awesome blood trail. Shot at angle through shoot through netting, hit 6 inches back broke three ribs & came out butt cheek. He was slightly angle towards me at 30 yards. He was dead at 99 yards (99 sounds better than 100 lol). Swat A4 has x blades on front & two different opening blades. He had a huge hole in ham. I love these swhacker style broadheads. The only crossbow I have that does not like these is the coldsteel cheapshot, but it is not the broadhead or the crossbow, it is tthe style of the factory arrows having small fletching allowing the closed blades to affect the spin. The fix was to remove the fletching and replace it with 4" fletch, with that fix you have to be careful not to "robinhood" your arrows.

I'll probably put new bands on. But I wonder if they broke down some, the rubber band itself, I mean, over time, being they were sitting in the pack for too long/or under too much heat, by sunlight or whatever. I wonder if that's why some people complain it didn't open? Just a thought. 🤷

I've just recently switch over the Swhacker broad heads and so far I'm a fan. I'm shooting the 150 gr 3" out of my cross bow which is an older parker 150lb draw under 300 fps. I've shot two deer with them a doe and a big 9 point. Neither took a step. The doe was a complete pass thru and stuck in the ground on the other side on a 20 yard shot. She jumped up and fell over backwards and kicked. Was dead within 2 mins. The buck I hit high right behind the front shoulder and he dropped in his tracks. Think I clipped spine with the big cut dia. Put a second in him to finish. So no opinion on blood trails yet cuz haven't had to trail anything lol. Nothing beats their accuracy. I'm using the Levi Morgain 125gr 2.5" cut out of my compound but have not shot anything with those yet to see how they do.

  • @tripplebeards3427
    @tripplebeards3427 ปีที่แล้ว

My best broadheads were the old rocky mountain gator with the the original chisel tip in my old 315 fps xbow. Giant slits in and out with pass throughs 99% of the time. Huge blood trails but usually never needed as most dropped in sight. Gonna try the Nap Ti 2 blade heads this season because they remind me of the gators. The only thing I don’t like with the swackers is they make a small entrance hole and if it hit a shoulder in the opposite side they will bleed internally with a poor blood trail. The gator style at least puts a giant entry and exit hole. It also folds around bone for better pentration. Never had a small exit hole on dozens of buck bucks shot with them. Been using the gators since the mid 90’s till my last couple finally got wrecked after going through tons of deer.

@@charlesbeaver5665 I bought a couple packs of the 2 blade Ti 2 3/16" two blade versions to try this year. They are about the closest match to the original chisel tip gators. The cut in contact blade tip version that Bass Pro sells bends and brakes just about every time I shoot a deer with them. No pass throughs either. The Gator black out SS doesn't open like they are advertised. I shot a couple of deer with them and only had 3/4" to 1" entrance and exit with poor blood trails. Tried the NAP double cross with the same poor results. Small holes and no blood trails. Found all my deer as well. Small entrance and exit holes again. I'm hoping the NAP Ti works like the old gators.

That's basically why I have not switched to a mechanical. I am looking at the TenPoint EVO-X CenterPunch and I think I will give them a try, they don't use a collar, it uses the speed and force of the bolt to retain the blades. I’m enjoying your ‘Confessions of a Crossbow Hunter’. I finally purchased my first crossbow, a Mission Sniper Lite, at age 68😃. The Scorpids looked interesting with the reverse draw for balance, but I could not find one to try.
So I found the Sniper Lite on line from ‘The Shooters Sports Center’ in Wisconsin. I was able to hold an old one here at home and it didn’t feel ‘nose’ heavy as others had felt…a sling helps me hold it better. It has a 150# draw that I can rope cock myself and speed of 310 fps w/400 grain arrow….slow like Bunjie. So far I’ve only shot field points and find them moderately easy to remove from a Reinhardt target and impossible to remove from a Bone Collector target. My husband had to yank the arrow out for me. Santa might bring me a bag target that is advertised two finger arrow removal with field point. (Not for broadheads)
My question is, what target would be easier to remove a broadhead from…maybe a Swa-hacker….the Reinhardt? Will it tear up my target to remove it? I’ve only shot fixed blade Muzzys, & Spitfire 100 gr. through my Mathews Mustang, vertical bow, yrs ago and never shot a target with them…but I was never able to get my draw weight over 40#, so didn’t think that was an issue with that bow.
I’m learning so much from your TH-cam videos and especially watching another up and coming woman hunter, in Genevieve! You go girl. Thanks
