    Oh that's really cool! Not only Joyce DiDonato is a great artist, but she seems to be such a warm, unpretentious person. And I know from her masterclass videos that she's a great teacher.

    You did it great at all levels, Anna! You gracefully undertook all the sudden suggestions Joyce gave to you In a prompt way, all which exercises sounded great!
    Besides, one could feel a beautiful and sincere chemistry between you while interacting.
    Brava😊🎉❤!

    I did not have "singing arias while doing power yoga" on my master class bingo card--but what a clever way to physically embody what Joyce DiDonato was teaching. I teach yoga and am learning voice, so I will have to try that in my own practice. I'm a late-blooming opera fan and just discovered your channel--will have to watch your others!

    Your voice is amazing. Fast, emotional vibrato like Callas, but more powerful and even. You may be self-critical, but for someone hearing you sing for the first time, you blew me away. Don't be unfair to yourself - your voice is truly astonishing.

    This was enlightening. It's not an ideal situation in one way but in another it is. On stage is stressful and so is learning in public but this was turned into a lesson on dealing with getting stuck with too much muscle tension . Just noticing how the singer managed to release in that stressful situation shows she got it! Very clever teaching and a great ability to persuade a singer to tackle basics . Breath and body

    Anna, thank you so much for sharing this; when Didonato teaches, we all learn.
    I hadnt heard your voice before this, and when you did your warm-up in the studio I loved your sound, you have such a delicious timbre. I noticed then that you could have done with a little help with your breathing; I wasn't surprised that Joyce chose to focus on that, she is so healing on foundational things. She is an absolute treasure.
    BTW I also loved your performing presence; you're not just a vehicle for the music, you bring something else personal. It's a very engaging quality. Wishing you continued progress and happiness in your art.

    The way that you described your performance made me sad and I could relate to it. All I could think about was how incredible you sounded and how I loved the quality and timbre of your voice. I really appreciate you taking the time to share that you relate to this as well. I struggle with being proud of what my voice is and my career as a whole, but I thought it was so relevant for other singers, and I don't want my channel to be a center for "perfection". A great masterclass, but one of the things that stands out to me the most is the simple, silly moment at the beginning when Joyce realizes you're filming and then pretends to be rude and demanding (after demonstrating pure kindness when she didn't think she was on camera), which stands a stark contrast to all the famous stars that are /actually/ rude and demanding but pretend to be nice when cameras are rolling

    Masterclasses are a bit confusing to me. What can you learn in such a limited time that’s not easier to learn in the practice room with a teacher?
    Is there anything in particular masterclasses touch more uppon, or is it more about getting thrown in the deep end and having someone correct you in a more uncomfortable situation?
    Either way, was fun to see the behind the scenes, i’ve seen quite a few recorded masterclasses, but never the singers side/experience. Thanks for sharing

    • @ludovico6890
      @ludovico6890 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you can learn a lot. Not only skills and methods, but an approach to your art, character analysis and a positive attitude. What Joyce said in this masterclass, Anna will have it with her through her career.

    • @operaanna
      @operaanna  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a good question! Of course it's hard to be on the same level as your teacher in terms of depth of work, BUT it can be incredibly useful to hear a similar idea or prompt worded in a different way. It can also be a good way to gauge where you are as a performer. Like I said in the video, this was really eye-opening for me because it showed me that I have to be STRICT about my pre-show preparation. Especially with someone like Joyce who has sung a lot of roles it can be interesting to get some insight you wouldn't otherwise get. How could I know that Sister Helen is "the most grounded person you'll ever met" or however Joyce worded it? Really helpful character subtext!

      @@operaanna AAh, so kinda like insight into a artists process, and what they as someone who's very experienced on stage/possibly in roles you yourself singing, finds most important about rep you're doing, more so than necessarily anything more tangible in terms of more technical skills. I was curious, cus my teacher once told me "tThere's nothing easier as a singer than holding a masterclass. You spend 20-40 minutes on one specific thing which makes it easy to create an audible change to wow the audience"

    • @operaanna
      @operaanna  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sum41foreverown ahh so sorry I never got back to this! But yes, they give sort of the first thing that comes to their head and hopefully it's something that you have the room for at that time. The breath thing definitely helped me! It's the first thing I forget when I'm nervous 😬 but I agree with your teacher, a lot of times it becomes a performance for the teacher and not the student, but I think Joyce does a really good job of balancing the two! She gave really personalized advice to everyone while playing to the audience.

  • @gabrielgabriel8096
    @gabrielgabriel8096 ปีที่แล้ว

    It happens very often nowaday that a lot of "dark" beautiful soprano voices (probably the most interesting ones) are clasified as mezzos... Unfortunartely and wrongly... By teachers that mistake voice colour with tessitura; or taking the speaking voice as the reference, etc, etc...
    Usually, gifted singers (as you are) can sing in more than one vocal typology; the easier one and the "other" one..., more difficult. The old italian singing school consisted, basically, of "developing" the voices at their maximum. Just the opposite of today..., at their minimum (for decades).
    No offense intended to you... At the contrary. You are very talented. Your voice is amazingly Beautiful, expressive and musical. But you don't sound like a mezzo... just because you are a soprano.
    All best

    • @operaanna
      @operaanna  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gabriel, I agree with everything you say, but I think it's really hard to tell someone's voice type from one recording. My voice does cross the mezzo/soprano registers, and I did in fact used to be a soprano, but for many reasons I switched to mezzo. The Fach system has a lot of positive things but I think also a lot of negative aspects that tend to confuse people and try to make their voices fit in a box. This is something I struggle with a lot, and while I'm glad this video can help some people, the fact that I was unhappy with how I sang (tired, out of my body, extremely nervous, technique changes, and more) made it quite nerve racking to upload. So while I appreciate your input, I have to disagree with your categorization of my voice. I learned a lot from the masterclass and still use the exercise quite often now! I hope other people will try it out too 🧡
