Art imitates life in Nobles seigneurs, salut! | Analysis
SORRY FOR THE EDITING MISTAKE AT 28:30 🙈🙈🙈 Of course I chose that moment to take a drink of water...
It’s ironic that some of you will be introduced to Meyerbeer in the context of his opera about religious persecution, as it was exactly his religion as a German Jew and the anti-Semitism that was obviously very prevalent in the early 20th century in Europe that got his music banned from Germany.
DON'T GET ME WRONG - I think Susanne Johnston sings well, but I think the whole production for this aria leaves a lot to be desired...

Well, Mozart is much more than a thorughfare. He integrated the invention of Bach with the Even Tempered Piano. Which - as such - never a problem for the string player Mozart playing on the unfretted violin. We KNOW that, because Mozart worked Johan Christian Bach - one of Bach surviving children (infant mortality was rampant). Bach had actually written down what he had invented/discovered to his musician son (all Bachs were musicians), Kunst der Fuge is another example, so his children would have a head start. Bach was much, much more a teacher than Mozart. We have some notes from Mozart getting to grips with poliphony which Mozart knew, but never came natural to him, so he had to write it to maintain a context. Mozart also brought the "story" into opera. The liberetto was as important to Mozart as it was to Verdi - Mozart clearly knew that people did not want to be BORED and a greek God is BORING - whereas your hairdresser has great gossip. Mozarts story line was much to messy to be accepted by todays Hollywood. In "Nozze.." there are plotholes you can drive a freight train through - and he saves the plot by calling it "a day of confusion" so the audience is not wondering what is going on. as the characters in the opera itself have no clew. It was left to Beethoven to put hatred into music. Not to mention Wagner. With exception of Gershwin no american composer has really progresses beyound plunking a guitar (an instrument Mozart heartedly dispiesed.) With Haydn Mozart got into the horrible mess of the woodwind - and actually wrote the definitive work. KV622 concerto in A major.

Not ornamenting? Nonsens. We know that Mozart wrote the bare minimum in the score - that was the boring and time consuming part. We KNOW that Mozart ornamented freestyle. We KNOW that from a letter from Nanr, where she specifically ask him to write out the ornaments for her sake.

    • @operaanna

But there eventually IS a resolution, a climax if you will, in this piece. The longing is almost palpable, brought to life by the musical notes; combine the wonderful tonality with singers and action on the stage -- undeniable drama and pathos. I'm not an opera fan, just attracted to beautiful music in smaller doses than a full opera.

Pavarotti not suited at all for this aria, despite the general (incompetent) public association of it with him. The standard on this aria has been widely recognized to be set by mario del monaco, with possibly corelli for those who prefer spinto tenors. For obvious reasons Caruso (possibly the greatest tenor) should not be inlcuded in any list of those singing nessun dorma 😂. You are doing an excellent job, brava!

I don't think the story is problematic, it simply reflects the historical milieu. it isn't unique to teh USA, Great Britain had it's own issues(the Opium Wars, South Africa), Belgium in the Congo, France in North Africa and Southeast Asia. I am reading the Amelia Peabody Mysteries by Elizabeth Peters(an Egyptologist from the Univ. of Chicago) really reflects "the white man's burden" attitude of the 19th and early 20th century.

ILMAO. You do not know the history of the Queen of the Night my lady. The Queen of the Night was an opera that was meant to be a vaudeville act because Mozart was trying to help his friend who was a vaudeville actor. What wound up happening was Emperor Joseph II liked the opera so much that he allowed Mozart to have the opera in the royal arena at that time. Mozart thought that he would only get 4 or 5 showings. It wound up getting 18 showings which was unheard of at that time. Everyone loved it. It was the Avatar of the day. Everyone was talking about the Queen of the Night. Word got out all over the world on this opera. In fact, the opera was played in Italy, Germany and 11 other countries at the time. Mozart obviously didn’t enjoy his success because he died shortly after. The Queen of the Night is so far ahead of it’s time, every composer since has tried to add bits and pieces of the vaudeville parts of the opera into their own and even tried to replicate the operas whistle singing which was millenniums ahead of it’s time. Mozart was a musical genius and nobody, Including Bach hasn’t been able to top the Queen of the Night. Diana Damrau mastered it because she understood that you had to be in shape to sing this part and so she kept in shape for this part. Diana has played the Queen of the Night 117 times. More than any other opera singer alive. That’s why she sounds the way she does.

The 2nd "Ridi" (laugh) in the big moment is my favorite note of this aria. In the line "Laugh from the pain that poisons of your heart". He's singing the word "laugh" but expressing pain. AND it comes after the big high notes. I love it when the lower, softer note is able to pack the most emotional punch. Wonderful performance - thank you for introducing me to Corelli. These older recordings are so primitive there's no telling how much better it sounded live. I definitely want to see this opera live.

My first opera was Lohengrin. I was 12 years old and I hated every second of it. My tie was choking me, my shoes didn't fit, and I had to endure 5 hours of the worst screeching nonsense any 12 year old ever was forced to. My God, no 12 year old boy wants to be in a suit and tie listening to a 5 hour opera. Even my parents later said they didn't like it. But with time comes growth, and now I adore opera (if it's good). I've tried (without success) to show my own kids how beautiful it can be. I think this is a pretty good list. I haven't seen many live operas (I live in rural Alabama); I've seen La Boheme, La Traviata (my favorite), and Tosca. I think Tosca and Pagliacci deserve at least honorable mention on this list. I would place them both above Don Giovanni. I'll check out your comic list next because I'm sure Marriage of Figaro is there.
