Rick Derringer (Rock and Roll Hoochie-coo) was the lead guitar player for The Edgar Winter Group. Sometimes, even brother Johnny (Winter) would sit in on a recording session, with his sibling Edgar. Both of them were as talented as they come.

Saw Brother Johnny in concert mid 90's , Sanford Florida, he and his band played in an old converted movie theatre, admission was 10 bucks and you got a plastic cup for all the tap beer you could drink. Johnny played most of brothers songs and it was spot on, why wouldn't it be? Of course they played Frankenstein, and the whole show was amazing, I was a fan in the 70's so this was a total joy to go see this concert but very sad not many people there, probably not promoted well, but I don't care, I got to see Johnny in person.

Such a great song from a classic album, They Only Come Out at Night. That is Ronnie Montrose on guitar and the incredible Dan Hartman on lead vocals. Rick Derringer, another superstar guitarman played on the album too. But... the must hear Edgar Winter album is Edgar Winter's White Trash. A Texas Blues/Horns/Funk band like no other! What an album, it's so so hot. Keep Playing That Rock and Roll, Give It Everything You've Got, Good Morning Music, and I've Got News for You are must hears. Such an incredible album, and not that well known. I got to see them at a small club here in Columbus. Whoa!!! One best kept secret you might want to indulge in.

Dan Hartman wrote and sang lead on this song (FREE RIDE). I'm pleased that you know about him, as he was a major talent that never really got the recognition he deserved. He passed in 1994 at the age of 43 from AIDS related tumor.

This might well be the greatest party song of the 70's. The biggest hit from this album, I think, was the instrumental "Frankenstein". But another song from the album that did a great job of expressing the 70's era party spirit was the lesser known tune "We All Had a Real Good Time." It's definitely worthwhile to grab your favorite adult beverage or other intoxicant and have a listen.

Harri, you had done Edgar Winter's Frankenstein about 4 months ago. The middle section of Freeride to me sounds like hand claps and cracking the rim with the snare. This was how I played it live but spared ears during practice. :) Such a smokin tune. Hope you add it to your workout playlist!!! You're the best my friend.

Man Rick Derringer just tears this up. One of my favorite underrated guitarists. Another artist to dive into. Ronnie Montrose started a band that introduced us to Sammy Hagar. Alot of stellar artists put together by Edgar Winter. Cutting edge stuff!

My favorite Edgar Winter band was called White Trash. A really funky group that also featured Jerry LaCroix. They had killer arrangements that had twin sax lines and perfectly harmonized screams, courtesy of the aforementioned Jerry LaCroix. Still Alive and Well, Give It Everything You Got, Dying to Live, Save the Planet... any of these will blow your socks off.

You're correct on the drum sound being from hitting the rim on the snare drum. "They Only Came Out at Night" is such a great album, one of my all-time favorites. It's filled with amazing songs.
I'm late to the party on hearing this review of the song. How did I miss this? I know you've already listened to "Frankenstein." A couple of others you may want to review are "We All Had a Real Good Time," a funky song, which was a major party song, and the much softer song, "Autumn," sung by Dan Hartman (singer on this song). It's absolutely beautiful.

This and "Frankenstein" were both very popular singles in the UK, "Frankenstein" a little more so than "Free Ride" which never quite made the UK top 40. Personally I prefer "Free Ride" of the two. However, The EWG did put out a number of singles in the wake of these two songs, but none really got much traction. Of those "We All Had a Real Good Time" was the one that shoulda-coulda - but didn't. Edgar has just this week released a new album called "Brother Johnny".
