Fun Fact: Abbott & Costello are the only two people who are in the Baseball Hall of Fame who have no association with the sport. I honestly can not count how many time I've watch this skit & laughed every time !!! Great reaction video you two. Keep it going !!!

This is a common mistake. They are not in the Hall of Fame. A copy of the script is on display at the Hall of Fame and a video version of it is there as well. This is very different from being in the Hall of Fame.

The "retired actor" in the front row that suggests they di the baseball routine and hands Costello the props is none other than THE GREATEST voice actor of all time, Mel Blanc. He was the voice for EVERY cartoon character you can name (well it's estimated he did 90%). Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety Pie, Sylvester, Foghorn Leghorn, and the Road Runner to name a few.
I met and interviewed Mel Blanc for a college course I was taking many years ago.

Fun fact:
Mel blank was allergic to carrots, yet they could find nothing that sounded like a crunched carrot, so when he did Bugs Bunny, it was for real and he would have to spit it out every time.

It's always amazed me that Abbott and Costello somehow managed to do this entire skit in 1 take, it took me 5 watches to notice the camera never cuts away after they get started. Pure comedic gods, they don't have anything like that these days😅😅😢😢

This routine is a classic. It is gold.!! It moves rather fast at times so pay attention. I think they were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame with this skit in 1956. The first "non-baseball celebrities ever to be inducted...
Well, the skit is in the Hall of Fame -- not technically Bud and Lou. The skit runs on a continuous loop there.
They performed in over 30 comedy movies over a 20 year period and also performed on 2 TV Shows (Colgate Comedy Hour and the Abbott and Costello Show) followed by an animated series and a comic book series following Lou's early death. they had soooooo many skits that all entertain modern audiences even in this day. Some of their best include 7X13=28, the Dice Game, Loafing, 2 Dimes for a Nickel, the Sasquehanna Hat Company, Niagara Falls and Alexander 2222.
I think they also performed this bit during their vaudville days before they hit it big.

@@barsandbarbells2022 They were just one of several great comedy groups of that period of the 20th century, others comedy greats of the time included The Three Stooges, The Marx Brothers, and Laurel and Hardy. All were very talented and had their own unique styles. If you haven't seen any of the groups I just named do find time to check them out.

This great routine was placed in the baseball Hall of Fame, I believe, in Cooperstown, in 1956. It just never gets old.
Hearing it the first time, you realize it's funny. Hearing it a few more times, you realize it's absolutely BRILLIANT!

Abbott And Costello were a Comedy Duo that started in Vaudeville, Travelling Stage Shows, that tranistioned into Movies/Film. Abbot and Costello even had a TV show in the 1950's......
Other acts that took a Similiar Path are: Laurel and Hardy, Marx Brothers, The 3 Stooges........
In 2006 a Major Leauge Player named Hu, Got a base hit and the announcer had the presence of mind to say on-air "It only took 70 years, but Hu is on First."

This skit never gets old. I have seen it many times & it still is funny! This is what you call good clean comedy that has lasted for decades. That was real talent! What a difference compared to the garbage that gets passed off today as comedy full of swearing & dirty jokes.
@@rickwelch8464 I feel ya, but for those of us older folks that do appreciate todays comedians, it is still nice to briefly transport back to a time when Milton Berle in drag and actual live tv prohibited the use of constant swearing. That way when someone like Vicki Lawrence in the momma skit swearing out of script was jaw dropping hilarious. 🇨🇦🖖🏻
A few years back my mom got my dad (born in 47) a Christmas tree ornament that has the likeness of Abbott and Costello and it has a recording of this bit on it. He sat there all day just listening to it over and over again. It was the greatest thing since sliced bread to him that Christmas day.

This is certainly their most famous routine. It was so intricate that they had to have practiced it on numerous occasions. Lou's delivery is so fast. He was also a fine dramatic actor.
His last dramatic role before his death a few months later was 'The Tobias Jones Story" on Wagon Train. Great episode very emotional..
They played that skit for twenty years; various lengths. Never twice exactly the same.

This is so timeless. It's so funny no matter how many times you see it. I was about 7 or 8 the first time I saw this, and I laughed so hard it hurt. I'm 54 now, and it's still a laugh out loud skit.
This has all the elements of what comedy is; rhythm, timing, writing, performance, chemistry. It's spawned many inspirations over the years, but the original article always stands above.
Another comedy element is one guy losing his temper without knowing why!

I'm retired two years now and we had a bunch of up and coming kids in the office who were really sharp. I say kids... they were in their late 20's. Us older folks were constantly using terms they didn't understand. This is one of the routines we used to play for them that they had never heard of. Sadly, we also explained the expression "drank the Kool aide" on another occasion. Their minds were blown.
Abbott & Costello... classic. They used their wits and timing and their comedy was clean. The whole family could enjoy them

They were highest paid and most grossing comedy act in movies and tv in 1940s and 1950s
The presentation changed every time but they had been doing it for many years at this point. It stems from an old vaudeville routine and they did it on their radio program 3 times. They have many other routines including "for mel to hide" and the restaurant scene.

I just liked and subscribed. I like what you guys are doing. I have seen many of their movies as well, their most famous (at least to me was “Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein”, which start a string of comedic scary, horror movies for them. They were funny with a touch of scary in them, can’t really call them horror at all, they were fun to watch! I will catch you guys on the next video!

This movie had no special effects and the most amazing stunt sequence ever filmed
Harold Lloyd's is hanging off a building doing the most amazing stunt work, and note he was missing parts of his fingers on his right hand when an explosive blew up in his hand. Every stunt he is literally 30 + feet off the ground with only a painter's platform 16 ft below him to catch him if he fell.
In their early career they did some radio broadcasts , but at the time Costello was using his natural deeper voice which made it hard for listeners to tell them apart. So Costello changed to a higher pitch to differentiate between the two men and the famous trademark was born.

Several people here have recommended the Marx Brothers. Oh yes. Absolutely.
There was a golden age in American comedy between approximately the 1920s and the 1970s. In those fifty or so years the scene was embarrassingly rich. Everywhere you looked there were good comedians and comic actors. Many of these were very good. Some were even great.
And then... then there were the Marx Brothers. They were in a class by themselves; nobody else came close. Their raw talent was staggering. It seemed they could do _everything._ Physical and verbal comedy, piano playing, harp playing, singing, dancing, stunts -- these guys did it all themselves, and they did it amazingly well.
They put in lots of years on the vaudeville circuit before making their many movies. The experience shows. I’d recommend their two best films. Start with “A Night at the Opera” (1935). Then see "Duck Soup" (1933).
After their movie career they (particularly Groucho) got into radio and television. And they didn’t stop there: Groucho was also a terrific writer. In fact, he always thought of himself primarily as a writer. Check out his autobiography: “Groucho and Me". Really well written, funny, and fascinating. He describes their childhood and adolescence, their years on the road, getting started in movies, etc. Another good one is "The Groucho Letters -- Letters To and From Groucho Marx". Sharp, witty, perceptive. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
This routine is so brilliant that it has been included in the Baseball Hall of Fame
It was originally written and performed in their movie “The Naughty Nineties”. It became a permanent part of their repertoire. It was voted by time magazine as the funniest comedy routine of the 20th century.

My grandfather was shopping at Costco and found a collection of 15 or so cassette tapes of classic comedy routines. I was around twelve or thirteen at the time and this was on an Abbott and Costello tape this was the first routine on side a. Since then I've listened to this routine and it still cracks me up to this day even after I lost Grandpa
Oh, I loved those; my grandparents got those for us too! I still like to track down those OTR shows. So far my favorite is the one where Superman fights the KKK.
This is an all-time classic. Another sketch worth checking out is Johnny Carson's "The Copper Clapper Caper" featuring Jack Webb in a hilarious spoof of Dragnet.

Seinfeld was based on A&C comedy as Jerry is a big fan. Classic comedy like Abbott & Costello, Laurel & Hardy, The 3 Stooges were cartoon characters who came to life.

Two of the masters of the form, at the top of their game. It's almost like watching a magic trick when you see people with actual talent doing their thing.
They started in radio in the 30's, made a bunch of great films in the 40's, and then were on TV in the early 50's. They did this routine in all 3. There is a statue of Lou in Paterson,, NJ, by the way.
@11:13 I have had this act memorized for a long time. In this performance there was a brief moment where Bud actually had to give a "reminder" line to Lou, because he didn't say the line correctly to stay on pace. This occurred at 8:29 when Bud says, "...what time what?" This was so Lou could ask the proper line of, "what time tomorrow you gonna tell me who's pitching?"
I was born in 1966. So I saw this many times in syndication through out the 70s and 80s.

I believe the first time this bit was used, was in a June 18, 1944 Abbott and Costello radio show. The show was a work-up to the routine. The premise was that Costello got a letter (telegram?) from baseball star Joe DiMaggio asking Costello to fill in for him, as he was recovering from an injury. The program ran for about 30 minutes. This is just comedy gold.
One of the things I so appreciate about channels like yours is that as a guy who has seen this routune so many times I have it memorized, sewing this in a "first viewing and reaction" like yours makes me feel like im watching it again for the first time. Thank you.
As a side note, back in the day, there was a board game based on this routine many, many years ago. I think the object of it was to guess the player's names on the other person's team. Anyway, if you pay attention, the only player who is not mentioned in the routine is the right fielder.
So they gave a name to the right fielder in the game. And the name was "Nobody." Nobody's in right field.

Costello is the most animated, and gets laughs for being confused, etc.
But Abbott's acting is off the charts. I feel that his role in this act does not get enough recognition.
Bud Abbott is touted as the greatest "straight man" in the history of comedy.
Look at how he stays in character. Look at how he comes across as genuine. Look at how quick his timing is. He never comes across as intentionally giving Costello a hard time, and he does it convincingly.
Both Abbott and Costello were comedic geniuses. Some of their supporting actors, in the two years of their television series, were also amazing -- such as Sidney Fields and Joe Kirk.
Lastly, both Abbott and Costello were able to adjust their routine "on the fly". They did so, a couple of times during this routine.
For example, @6:22 ("Look, Louie, you don't seem to understand..."), Abbott was leading into the "Who gets the money" part of the bit. But Costello wanted a different approach.
A few seconds into Abbott's explanation, watch how Costello interrupts him. He did it so well, that I suspect that few people caught on. And Abbott, being highly professional, recognized what his partner was doing, and went along with the gear change.
Neither of them got tripped up. They kept going, without missing a beat.

I LOVE this bit. I see others mentioned a lot of their other routines but I hadn't seen this one mentioned. See if you can the one that starts out...Your 40 and your girlfriend is only 10. You can't marry her because you're 4 times older than her, so you wait 5 years....
I used to play in an 18-piece swing band. About 20 years ago, we had this outdoor gig that was WWII themed and had additional entertainment of a trio of girls from the USO. After we played and the USO girls did their thing, we noticed two guys walking around dressed up like Abbot and Costello. Nobody knew who they were, or if they were supposed to be part of the entertainment. They just showed up. And they both really looked like them. So before our next set, we let them get up and do their Who's On First bit. I was seated at a table in the back and there was a kid that must have been 8 or 10 in front of me, that literally rolled off his seat laughing at this. To me, THAT was funnier than their bit.
The amount of memorization and timing this skit requires is amazing.
They first did this skit on radio in 37 or 38. They did 4 or 5 on the radio and in a movie. They changed it a little each time they did it but only the order of it. The First time I heard it was the first radio version and they used real ballplayers Dizzy and Daffy Dean. Lou Costello was their French cousin Goo Fay. That's how he pronounced it.
This version is from TV, first done of burlesque stage,early radio and in the movie "NAUGHTY NINETIES" and after all these years it still holds up a good laugh 👍🏾👊🏾👊🏾

In their movies and in their sketches they were just the greatest duo. Used to watch them with Bowery Boys on Saturdays and Abbott and Costello was a perfect double feature.

Bud Abbott was a fantastic straight man. No matter what antics Lou Costello would pull with his physical and facial reactions, Abbott somehow kept a straight face.
In the many movies they did the scriptwriters had to deal with Lou Costello going off script because he was so clever with lines and thought sonething else would be funnier but Bud Abbott would reel him back in when needed.
Similar to the Dentist Sketch from the Carol Burnett show.
Costello was the boss. Abbott got 60% because he was the best straight man in the country, and good ones were scarce.

This skit was already over 30 years old when i first heard it and that was 50 years ago when i was 8 ...never gets old seeing people discover it for the first time. Good choice.
I'll be 75 this summer. Saw this as a kid and hundreds of times since as it never gets old. Good comedy requires great timing...see video . Now if you want to see something that will make your brain stop and leave you with a reaction like " WOW! I've got nothing." "How was that done in one take?" Look at the screen remaining up after the video. Bottom center is Tina S performing a transposition (piano to guitar) of the 3rd movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on the guitar with a metal sound. WARNING!! Keep a bucket of water handy as your computer may catch fire. Now 'retired ' and in college she is still a legend as a top rated guitar player in the freaking world.

A great old time comedy act that is centered on music is Roy Clark and Buck Trent "Dueling banjos". Even if you don't do a reaction to it, you should still check it out. Good comedic piece with two amazing musicians. Roy Clark can play anything with strings and make it burn.
It's slapstick comedy. Love those guys. Love their movies!

This is an old Vaudeville they picked up and polished. What makes it so special is their timing. To this day comedians study their timing to improve their craft.

This routine goes back to vaudeville in 20's. A&B refined it to a fine art. I can remember searching the Twin Cities for months to find this on an album 45 years ago; now I can just hit search and there it is...;)

This was actually an old vaudeville routine that was performed by many entertainers besides Abbott and Costello. But they adapted it, perfected it, and made it their own. So now it is remembered as their signature skit and rightfully so.
