You definitely saved that car from a much worse fate and helped that woman out by being such an easy seller to work with. A financial breakeven, but a sentimental win for sure. Good for you.
you are giving these people a sweet deal. A car that's been worked over to that extent is worth a lot. But people don't know how to recognize value. People want to pay $500 less for a car that a guy pulled out of a ditch, vacuumed, filled up with stop-leak, and sold for $1000 profit.

Had the same situation with my 80's jetta. Spent $1,000 on brakes all round (brake pedal was suddenly soft.) Got in the car with new brakes and.... soft pedal. Had to buy new brake booster after that. Kind of made me mad. Old cars are great until they nickle & dime you into poverty
