Thanks for this video. I begin as a new legal assistant at the end of this month and I'm taking all the notes and doing as much research as I can before starting.
Thank you! You give great advice, from real world experience. That's the best kind. I learned early on (I'm an older lady ha ha) to never assume things. That it's better to ask clarifying questions and appear 'stupid', than really screwing things up later on because you were afraid to ask. And it's ok to not know how to do something, just keep asking for help!
@@kristinemyangel33 I started as a legal aide, filing, phones, coffee, setting up conference room meetings that sort of thing. I was promoted to legal assistant, signing up new clients, setting up doctor’s appointments, sending demand letters, compiling litigation medical binders (I requested all medical records, reviewed them etc) it was such a passion of mine and still is helping people. I had to walk away because the main attorney is criminal defense attorney and he started showing me the ropes. Well one case was a cartel person and meth for distribution. His wife came into the office (I also was their translator) she asked how my son (by name) liked his school….and if I wanted to keep him I would tell her how much to make this case go away. It was scary…but I’ve grown and matured immensely and I’m excited and ready to get back into PI work.

Hi. Thx for the information. I’ve gone to school for both paralegal and legal investigations. Life happens and I never got serious about breaking into the industry and I’m currently trying to now. Just looking for any tips as to how to get a job that would translate into a stable career. I know I’m smart and capable. Do you have any advice on what a good starting point would be and what firms/lawyers are looking for in a practical sense? Thanks for your time!
I recently started with a law firm, was hired as a file clerk but will be getting trained as a legal assistant as well. They mentioned that for their firm, the file clerks and receptionists are usually who they choose for legal assistants if they show a good work ethic.
I just secured an internship with a small firm and got assigned the role of a paralegal to start in three days. It's my first work experience in the legal field and I'm just finishing my second year. I barely have any knowledge in any of the areas they specialise in except criminal and personal injuries cause I've just recently done some relating subjects for the first time this second year (i.e criminal & tort law). I'm a bit worried that I'll embarrass myself and the company. I mainly applied for the job cause i wanted something to do this summer, the pay was right and my parents were excited cause it was in my field of study. But boy, I'm so anxious. I don't even know what filing is and some of the terminologies used are obscure to me. Heck! I only just found out what & who paralegals are after I got the job. The worst part is that I was planning on taking supplementary assessments this summer, durring the same time period as this internship. And the thought of overttimes make me want to cry and pull my teeth out. Thanks so much for your tips. Still very much pray that there'll be some form of training but I doubt. Everyone's trying to get their own work in before the deadlines that I'll be so suprise if they notice an addition to the workforce.
@@jaydetate314 Omg omg omg! I honestly forgot about this comment. Thanks Jayde for bringing me back, just had a nice period of reflection. In regard to the internship, it was good. None of the things I worried about were what I ended up having problems with. The workload was okay for the first few weeks but as time went on there was less and less of it to the extent where i started dreading going to work because I would end up fiddling on mundane tasks and being given assignments that already had been completed. On some days I would have nothing specific to do but to look through an already updated data base. But, I realised that I should have expected that; job opportunities (like vacation schemes) usually should only last for 2 weeks- there's only so much work a firm can give a 2nd year student. I got to try my hands on immigration and family (mainly form filling) but not as much as P.I though. It was okay generally. The firm I worked for is fairly new (only a couple of years in the industry) and big on extra-curriclar activities so I got to enjoy other stuff like sports, invites to the movies and spa, editing their magazine article drafts (cause I love creative writing) and even doing blog posts for their social media. Did have some mild altercation with a co-worker but I believe we resolved it before I left (wouldn't know for sure, the whole experience was a blur). I'm stil thankful for it though as it helped me ascertain what a career in law can look like.
Wow everything you said is exactly what i went through as a legal assistant for a personal injury firm. This is so on point. I ended up hating it and my boss always made sure i knew she didnt like me so that would make every thing harder for me. I hated her, she wasn't even one of the attorneys or CEOs, she was just the manager of the department but at the same time i can imagine all the stress and anxiety she was under. Not even the attorneys were as arrogant or as rude as she was.
Ugh so I currently just started working as a legal assistant in a personal injury law firm and I’m contemplating life right now lol. It’s so frustrating and stressful but I really need the legal assistant experience. What should I do?

Same here I have an interview on Monday for a legal secretarial position and I'm nervous because I know nothing about law. I feel they contacted me because of my years experience as an Administrative Assistant. Does anyone know what type of documents the attorneys want you type?
I was looking for entry level experience in IT and I landed a job with a Houston-based PI law firm back in january. I was so happy, as a legal IT assistant. It is a family owned law firm, and my boss was very nice, I respect her and thank her for the opportunity. I was an assistant for their IT director, and they brought in a third guy to take over the report generating which was offshored to some guy in india. The man is like pushing 40 and I am 27 here with little to no experience. I felt pretty little and felt like I could have done more, but my director just does not have time wearing the supervisor hat. I was terminated this past Friday. The schedule flexibility thing, well sad to say, I lost two loved ones while working there and I had to take 2 bereavements which is something I believe it is attributed to my termination. I missed like 5 days of work in total, and it sucks having to go to work with that chip on your shoulder. While I was here looking at my emails to see if there is any assistance around the office, I saw how legal assistants were hauling ass which was pretty cool. I would have never thought I would work in law, but yeah these girls were pushing it. It is true, you play with law, you have deadlines, people's cases are in your hands, and if you botch something, while it is a bit tough, it does make the law firm look bad because of your mistakes and there is usually 0 tolerance. I got along pretty well with staff, and I wish I could have been able to support them by learning and being delegated more stuff, but while I do own some fault in some things, the director was just not giving me much to work with. The last email I read this past friday just read that my reason for termination was not developing skills, like bro HOW!!!??? I spent 6 months there and just drove hoping for the best every day. The man only gave me one report to change some SOLs in Neos which was the firm's software, and he showed me how to change some templates for some POA forms. Like that is cool, like give me some stuff like that. I don't blame the guy, but he does have a lot of burden which is why I was hired, but nope. NADA. I still feel thankful for the 6 months of experience, currently I am looking for another job and I was thinking of hopping to the next law firm with this experience, while I did not work in intake or cases, I wonder if this could perhaps help me pivot. Having 0 things to do just made my days very psychological, being stuck inside that office while everyone was working sucked balls. But yeah I guess that is the path of every recent grad, get that half assed job and move on. There is indeed a lot of prestige, and I was always very happy to help and assist the girls with their computers as I consider customer service my strongest skill. The termination letter did say that I was very good employee to work with which is totally something they need to recognize. Sneaky sons of snuck an exit interview with me and I was very blunt and polite with my feedback, and I noticed the girl (she the lawyer's right hand) was a bit upset, like I have good potential, they just simply did not know how to leverage it, so back they to the neverending zoom interviews. Should I continue working in law?
I'm interviewing for something similar tomorrow In the Midwest. It's a small firm and I'm going in blind in regards to what they are looking for in the position. They even have someone outside the country handling some of their IT.
@@rmo9808 Hi there! I wish you the best. Working in Law you definitely learn a lot of stuff, while it sounds a bit tedious, it is indeed very important to learn about. Honestly as long as you are open to learning you can submerge yourself into the material they teach you. Working as a legal assistant may be a bit tedious and boring at times, but definitely a very good position. Yes, some small firms do tend to outsource, but here in this office they have their it dept because the case management software that is used is not one-size-fits-all, a lot of work is done in generating templates for documents and making field changes in intake reports, etc. like yeah. My job did outsource report generating because it is a mid-sized firm, so they need to see how many calls are picked and how many cases are processed, etc. Some guy from india did this, but they stopped using him since the quality of his reports were not so good, also the time difference was another factor. Now my other coworker is bound with ball and chain typing these things for 5 departments across. lol. I really wanted to learn more about this, but IDK maybe i dodged a bullet there. I am still processing all of this. I truly am thankful for the experience, and working for a very big law firm well known and advertised across my city is definitely a dream come true. I am so salty and mad about this but whatever. I'll move on to another firm I suppose. I need money! lol.
Just landed my first legal assistant job and I’m a third of the way through my paralegal course. SUPER anxious but I have been doing research and reviewing old notes and assignments from my studies. Any recommendations for what to bring on the first day? What training looks like?
I just got hired as a legal assistant in the other side of the country, my family don't support me and my friends said that they support me but two of them said the same of my family that I'm going to be fired soon, I thought they support me but they are the same, they don't believe that I can do all the things and don't be fired.
I'm in the US Navy as an electrician but I'm switching my job to Legalman which is a Navy paralegal for JAG officers. I'll be required to take paralegal studies on the military side my school also requires me to study civilian paralegal law as well. I feel like the military law field is much more strict and on the book than civilian. If you have any advice I'd love it.
Ok, carry a notepad/voice recorder(is that ok)....Im pretty forgetful....can I ask how you are trained? what kind of tasks did you start with and whats your usual tasks now? Did you get trained on how to speak with people?
I'm planning on going to college for paralegal this September. What do you suggest i bring to my first day and how long should i plan to schedule studying for each day?
Hi Cheyenne. I did not go to paralegal school, but I assume you will need to bring the basic supplies such as notebook, pens, maybe a laptop? I would ask your instructors if there is anything specific you need to take to your classes, that way you're not missing anything. As far as your study schedule, I don't think there's a definite answer, it all depends on you.
I want to know some tips if you dont have a previous experience in legal assistant. I have 3+ years in customer service and what questions do they ask during the interview?
Can we get learning tips. I know research but I can't afford a certification program. So how do I do research and learn about the field? =( Anyone have any tips and or steps to learning and soaking up knowledge. I have 0 experience and have 0 idea what I am doing lol
Hi! It depends. Some of the positions that I applied for required a bachelor’s degree. I never got a paralegal certificate or anything like that. But I would read the job description to see if they are looking for a specific degree/certification. And there isn’t a specific license to practice as a legal assistant in LA.
Why is there so many women in this industry? Is it because they are more organized than males ? I haven't seen one single male paralegal around my city. I'm just curious.
Hi! I don’t think law schools recommend working during your 1L and I think by that point you should be thinking about landing an internship/job as an attorney. But you should check with the schools!
It is Clear to me that you have never worked in the top five or top 10 big law firm… You have to be a total bad ass, I have been in the legal field for 35 years so I know what I’m talking about

Hi did you get the Job? Could you share the experience?
I totally understand what you mean by trying to figure out what they are asking for. I get a stack of files with post it notes. lol I'm asking a lot of questions.
UPDATE: I HAD AN INTERVIEW TODAY IT WENT WELL!!! 🧡🧡🧡 11/24.
so i’m a paralegal/criminal justice major and i want to make the change to jumpstart my career with being a legal assistant/paralegal. i don’t have previous experience so this is new, but i’m very very excited!!! thank you for this!
Girl same!! I hope you take the leap and that it goes great! ❤️
Starting as a Legal Assistant soon and this was very helpful 🙏🏼🙏🏼 Thank you !!!
Thank you so much for this! I start next week fresh out of uni and am starting to get very nervous 🤩🥰
I've made so many mistakes as a legal assistant but my boss has been so patient. Been here 5 years almost. It can get stressful but after a while it just feels automatic. Like I dont even have to think I just do things without effort which can bore you. Beats getting screamed at every hour though.
You don’t get training when hired?😭im scared
@@mssilvaa2 this is my third week as a legal assistant for an attorney and ive made mistakes and have gotten corrected he just shows me once and expects me to know it but im not giving up hopefully i will last and learn and hopefully one day do it naturally
@@ninidecoss2633 I am retiring (age 66) in a few weeks after 8 years working for the best criminal defense attorney. It's a small firm in a small town, not quite so fast paced as Steph has experienced, but anxiety producing nonetheless. Hang in there, and you will be greatly rewarded with increased confidence and people skills. I know you will do well since you are taking time out of your day to find ways to be better at what you do. Good luck on your new career!
Hi, Your content is very helpful. I was given a job as a legal personal assistant but I was scared and start doubting myself If I can do the job. I am looking forward to seeing more videos from your daily life working as a legal assistant. Thank you. God bless!
You’re so pretty! This was also so helpful! Thank you 💙
This is so great!!! Thank you’ I can’t thank you enough!! ❤️❤️
This is so helpful. Im just starting off and had a few trip ups similar to yours and felt like a failure especially since I come from a family of rock star paralegals. My sister reminds me that it takes time to learn and Im doing fine but its nice to hear from someone else that its a process. ❤️❤️
Glad to hear this video helped! That's wonderful of your sister to reassure you that it's a process. Mistakes will definitely be made, but you will learn from them. In this field, you will constantly be learning.
Thank you very much for the tip, I thought it was me who have some of the feelings you described
This was sooo helpful, I’m new to this (legal assistant position) Is there any way you can provide a video on more of being organized when at your desk etc?? I really need help with this part
Hi, yes of course! I’m currently assisting in a trial, but once that’s over I will be creating more content on organization :)
I'm a tax associate for real estate lenders and my job is literally the same as a paralegal which is great because I eventually want to work as a paralegal for real estate attorney's. I'm in school now for legal studies. The only thing that is definitely is we know what our schedule will be.
Thank you for this so needed!!
Very helpful tips...thank you! I started working at a law firm last year with one attorney to support and later added a second attorney.
Thank you!! I haven’t worked as a legal assistant in about 10 years but I was great at litigation PI cases.
What were your job requirements when you were doing though cases
I just became a case worker so I’m doing all I can to be best prepared for the role. Your very pretty. Great video.
Yay so excited starting my program in May. I’m changing careers, but have experience working at a law firm so hoping this transition goes well. Thanks for your video!
Giiiiiiirl yessss thank you! I’m playing this in my ear pods at all times. I literallly sent something by accident to plaintiff counsel today and im in insurance defence litigation. I get the warning thing but like ffuuuuccckkk it sucks to fuck it up. Honest mistake. I deal with over 700 files😂😂😂
Thank goodness for me then that my whole life I've asked "too many questions" and "you talk too much", sounds like for once those traits will be beneficial!
Hey thanks, I'm starting as a junior paralegal on the 1st of Jan! Super nervous and excited at the same time!
Thanks I like the straight forward, easy to understand, advice and tips. For example, I can understand how carrying a notepad can help.
This is so great! We had our legal assistant intern watch this and it was very helpful for all of us.
I'm thinking of becoming a paralegal. I'm still in highschool and this seems like an interesting career! Albeit it does seem very stressful and I heard the law field is oversaturated :(
I'm thinking maybe the business or law field for me, thank you for making these videos. Also thank you TH-cam for recommending!
I will be completed with my AS degree in Paralegal this month. I think I want try a new career as a corporate legal assistant...this video was very helpful...THANK U♥️
this is my third week and i have turned in work for review and have been wrong thank goodness my boss is some what patient with me i just dont want to keep messing up
Girl lol I’m going to have phone recording and taking notes to double hear what we discussed and review my notes lol
Girl you just saved me ! I start my new job as an assistant this week ! Thank youuu 🥹🙌🏼
How is it?
This is a really good description of a legal assistant, can you tell us how you got a job as a legal assistant as they are really hard to get.
Sure thing, I’ll make sure to have a video on this soon!
Find a temporary agency that specializes in legal temps, its the fastest way in with no experience.
Hi Shae! I am really interested to know how it went for you!! I hope well! :)
Not even the attorneys were as arrogant or as rude as she was.
go to a different field! i also had a bad experience at a personal injury firm, but i work at a debt collection firm and absolutely love it! 🥰
Ugh so I currently just started working as a legal assistant in a personal injury law firm and I’m contemplating life right now lol. It’s so frustrating and stressful but I really need the legal assistant experience. What should I do?
@@jaleayasolomonhello 😊what did you end up deciding? Wish I could help but I'm currently debating wether i should take the paralegal program or the legal secretary program
This is so spot on!!!!!!!! THANKYOU
Thank you for the advice!
This was so helpful! Please post more !
Of course! I will be uploading more content like this :) Let me know if there’s anything specific you would like me to cover. Thanks!
I've been a Legal Assistant/Paralegal (virtually) for more than 3 years - property law/conveyancing in AU and I find it fascinating.
Is the pay good can it be compared to a nurse salary for instance?
@@chichioko1446 for me yes especially here in the Philippines. My clients/lawyers pay me premium 😊 my current rate on upwork is $10/hr.
I’m helping my honey out (TX attorney) I’m excited to help him with all the stress he deals with ❤️ 🤞🏽
Thank you I have an interview today as a legal secretary/receptionist and I have no previous experience and I’m very nervous
Same here I have an interview on Monday for a legal secretarial position and I'm nervous because I know nothing about law. I feel they contacted me because of my years experience as an Administrative Assistant. Does anyone know what type of documents the attorneys want you type?
Girl same here!
I got an interview next week, thank you so much
That's awesome, best of luck!
I just got offered a position as a legal assistant and I'm scared !
Thanks for the video, good stuff. 👍 I’m looking for a career change from transportation to legal.
I need money! lol.
I learned the difference between 'save' and 'Save As' real quick in regards to templates. 🥴
Hahaha definitely! You learn real fast after the first time!
Just landed my first legal assistant job and I’m a third of the way through my paralegal course. SUPER anxious but I have been doing research and reviewing old notes and assignments from my studies. Any recommendations for what to bring on the first day? What training looks like?
How was your interview? I’m in third year of college and have no experience but I wanna go for it
I’m starting my new legal assistant job next week 😭
I just got hired as a legal assistant in the other side of the country, my family don't support me and my friends said that they support me but two of them said the same of my family that I'm going to be fired soon, I thought they support me but they are the same, they don't believe that I can do all the things and don't be fired.
Sometimes attorneys are not clear with their instructions..... the understatement of the century. They're confusing us with opposing counsel. 😅
Sis, thank you!
That is my dream❤ I am an infantry girl, also a paralegal in my civilian world! Canada québec ❤
Besides template downloads what are other apps that are must haves and helpful to have when starting out.
First day next week!

Ok, carry a notepad/voice recorder(is that ok)....Im pretty forgetful....can I ask how you are trained? what kind of tasks did you start with and whats your usual tasks now? Did you get trained on how to speak with people?
Do you have any templet content? In regards to plagiarizing documents
This video is too helpful for me thanku
Are you able to share a template outlining key plans monthly to present to your Solicitor
I have 3+ years in customer service and what questions do they ask during the interview?
thank you
As a legal assistant, did you ever have to assist clients with documentation legalization (apostilles/authentications)?
It’s my senior year in college and I want to apply to become a legal assistant, and I’m so scared that I will mess up
How did it go?
Can you be a legal assistant even though you're an Education graduate? Thank you in advance! :)
Can we get learning tips. I know research but I can't afford a certification program. So how do I do research and learn about the field? =( Anyone have any tips and or steps to learning and soaking up knowledge. I have 0 experience and have 0 idea what I am doing lol
is there a certification one needs to work as an LA like for paralegal? some sort of LA license??
Hi! It depends. Some of the positions that I applied for required a bachelor’s degree. I never got a paralegal certificate or anything like that. But I would read the job description to see if they are looking for a specific degree/certification. And there isn’t a specific license to practice as a legal assistant in LA.
Get certified from an American Bar Association approved program
Why is there so many women in this industry? Is it because they are more organized than males ? I haven't seen one single male paralegal around my city. I'm just curious.
So exciting I desperately need a legal assistant job, anyone ready to take me here in UK?
Ur very pretty btw ❤
Hi...I am from Pakistan.... Do u think men have any scope for this job
It must be hard to Attorney law firms 👩💼
Do you need a paralegal degree to become a legal assistant?
You don’t need a paralegal certificate to become a legal assistant! At least in CA, there are employers willing to hire legal assistants without one.
Would you recommend being a legal assistant while in law school?
Hi! I don’t think law schools recommend working during your 1L and I think by that point you should be thinking about landing an internship/job as an attorney. But you should check with the schools!
Are you in California? You and I need to connect 😃
