  • Today we get a look at two vehicles from West Whiteland Police Department that together cost $80,000! This traffic unit is built up of a Dodge Durango and Ford F150. The Dodge Durango is unmarked and set up like a normal patrol cruiser, while the Ford F150 carries all of the traffic and inspection gear. The traffic unit greatly provides for the West Whiteland community, surrounding areas, and local events by making sure that the vehicles on the streets are safe! I would be curious to know if the commercial inspections done by this PD are in line with FMCSA Regs. I ask because as a interstate commercial driver we are inspected at scales, and by State Troopers who are USDOT Certified Motor Carrier Enforcement Officers. I am hoping these Officers know the Regs and are not just assuming what is correct and what is not. Commercial Vehicles have a multitude of inspection points that are looked at during stops. I have never seen local PD performing DOT stops but it is interesting for sure

In Ohio unmarked cars are not allowed** to conduct traffic stops due to the safety issues it causes. I believe it was in response to people feeling unsafe being pulled over by imposters.
Edit* it's up to the local sheriff to determine if the car is considered marked or unmarked. There have been discussions regarding if YSU's Ghost lettering is considered marked or not.
Edit 2** I misspoke, They are not to be used primarily for traffic stops, but as an example, the Chief's car is unmarked in my township and they can pull people over if they are on their way to work and see something dangerous. It's just that the officer or chief's job cant be primarily traffic enforcement. So "Bad Drivers of The NorCal Area" 's comment below is correct, an unmarked can pull you over, but can't be primarily traffic enforcement.

The ONLY reason township and city has there own DOT unit is for revenue, they get zero $ when it's the state doing it.
Speaking from experience there should only be 1 DOT and that would be federal officers,no state,no local.
Federal Motor Carrier rules and regulations are just that federal no state regulations or county should apply.
All to often many state to county level just "make it up" as they go.
Have had many state to local officials try and give me citations absolutely not in the Federal Motor Carrier rules or regulations.
Not only do I have to take it to court and I do win I have to also file a lawsuit against that Department for lost wages dealing with the issues, the expenses of my insurance going up and my CSA score to be fixed, this all takes time and money and a lawyer.
And in the case of a Arizona state DOT officer personally suing him for violating my constitutional rights.
All this could be avoided if some officers knew there job.
To be fair to law enforcement I have dealt with way more professional officers then not.
1 out of a 100 are usually assholes.

PA law requires permission from the private property owner, police may not just park themselves on private property without prior permission from the property owner. That's a no no here in PA. As for commercial motor carrier enforcement, PA state troopers in motor carrier and commercial vehicle enforcement do a lot of the enforcement. PA DoT officers also run enforcement, some local departments have commercial vehicle enforcement but many truck drivers have had issues with some of the officers not being trained properly in commercial vehicle rules and regulations. Usually local departments in PA like WWPD are located near heavy truck routes and tend to be more affluent and have more resources to help support them. As for speed enforcement VSpec, ENRADD, VASCAR and stop watches are not really something police should be using to time vehicles and do speed enforcement honestly as they are wildly inaccurate and dependent on too many human factors and local conditions. They also can be easily beaten in local district justice courts with simple math and some basic research and knowledge of PA Title 75 vehicle code which tells you the exact requirements for traffic enforcement. PA state police are the only ones to have radar guns as local police may not by law use them at all.
