    Thanks for the tour. I was a paramedic from 1978 to 1997. Some things have changed, some have stayed the same. Funny how the least used stuff is still under the squad bench. Under the bench, we had what we called the OEMS bag, a gallon zip lock bag which had the stuff we were required to have by state code, but we never used. Four safety pins, ammonia inhalants, stuff like that.
    Those roll-up Reeves stretchers have been around for a very long time. At least since the 1930''s. They were developed for use on ships or railroad passenger cars. Sometimes they were called Pullman stretchers after the Pullman passenger rail cars

    • @lf206
      @lf206 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What were the safety pins for?
      😄
      Reminds me of my dad‘s camping first aid kit: it has two quarters (used to be dimes) taped together in case you need to make a phone call. Also some truly ancient liquid bandage and a snake bite kit that totally goes against current recommendations.
      Every time we clean out the expired medicines and add more bandaids, we leave those things in for nostalgia’s sake.
      I always crack up at the mental image of offering a stranger $.50 for the use of their phone in an emergency-as if any decent person wouldn’t just call 911 for you for free.

    • @clmccomas
      @clmccomas 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lf206 The safety pins were for that cloth of a thousand uses, the triangular bandage. Never mind that most had 2 safety pins in the package.
      As you probably know the coins were a hold over from the days before cell phones, were in a lot of cases you needed a dime or later a quarter to get a dial tone on the pay phone to call the seven digit number of whatever emergency service you needed. Certainly not needed in the last 20 years in the U.S. since we now have 9-1-1 coverage throughout and everybody keeps a portable tracking device, (smart phone), in their pocket.

    We run a full fleet of Mercedes sprinters, ALS And BLS. 2 “baris” that lack autoload unfortunately and only have power cots that still have to be manually lifted into the ambulance. We do a sealed system as well but not as nice as what you guys do. We do a sealed cabinet so we use plastic seal tags that get checked in our morning checks everyday. In theory it’s supposed to work but it’s trusting that the last crew put everything in and restocked accordingly. ALS and BLS bags are both STAT packs equipped for our daily needs.

    Love it! What a beautiful vehicle. All those diamond plate and aluminum cabinets. I want an ambulance as my RV at some point when I have time to convert it.
    I would like to see some coverage of the Air conditioner, heater, inverter, house battery, electrical system, and what all those switches do inside the cab and on the wall near the countertop. The power grid in the ambulance is fascinating. Please show us more of those details.
    I think you boys are hired for your good looks as much as your skills. Great tour, keep 'em coming. I would love to see more models. Thank you for your service! I owe you folks my life - twice.

    5:56 That is why our first in bag has everything we need. It’s easier. on our stretcher we keep the first in bag, Oxygen bag, trauma bag, and pediatric bag. When we get to the call we take off what we don’t need and we put the Cardiac monitor on it. It’s pretty weird how it works.

    Why do you you have both the combi-board and a backboard? We only have the combi-board and have taken out both the scoop-board and the backboard. Safes a lot of space, weight and it works great.

    Hi, thanks for showing us around your vehicle. As an Aussie I found some things a little bit strange. Your in Colorado, mountainous territory and high basic altitude, you will encounter lots of snow no doubt and yet they specify such a large and heavy vehicle as two wheel drive and petrol? Surely a 4 X 4 Turbo Diesel engine would be the most sensible way to go to give you the best power and traction option? Apart from that, may I wish you and your workmates all the best of luck and thoughts as you take on the extra workload during this battle with COVID 19. Melbourne, Australia.

      Diesel was a COMPLETE disaster with ambulances from about 2003+. The emissions equipment implemented on the modern Diesel engines in the US made them VERY unreliable, mainly due to idling them ALL DAY LONG (a lot of crews don't have stations to sit in).
      Gas v10 Ford engines introduced in 2011 were a HUGE relief when it came to reliability. Gasoline is CHEAP in the US, currently about $2 a gallon.
      As far as 4wd, the dual wheeled big trucks go through snow like a 4wd. I got stuck once due to going down a 2 track and not having enough room to turn around. We shoved back boards under the spinning wheels and got it unstuck.

      Same boat my friend. I worked so hard to become an EMT. I was a new recruit. They put me with an FTO that didn’t teach me anything, had an incredibly bad attitude to the point of being unrealistic, had impossible standards that I could not reach, and on top of that told my manager lies about me and she got me fired. I miss that job everyday. What irritates me the most is that the FTO got away with it. And I know I’m not the only one that she did that to. She has a bad reputation within the company is what I heard from some old coworkers that I am still friends with.

    I have a few questions: why do all the US ambulance services I’ve seen transport people on extrication boards? It’s not what they are for, is not good practice and can do more damage to the spine? How do you load a patient into the vehicle that’s sat on the stair chair when you have no ramp? Are your sirens changed using the horn on the steering wheel or do you have to take your hands off the wheel to change them?

    • @PrepMedic
      @PrepMedic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. We only transport patient on backboards if there are noted neurological deficits, or if they require global immobilization due to massive multi system trauma. 2. You don’t transport the patient on the stair chair, you transfer them to the cot. 3, sirens are controlled from a dial or the steering wheel

    • @CymruEmergencyResponder
      @CymruEmergencyResponder 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      PrepMedic thanks for the reply. That’s what I mean, here absolutely no patient is transported on those boards because it is considered poor practice and does more damage. That’s why we call them extrication boards, because they are only to be used for extrication. We then transfer the patient onto either a scoop or a vacmat for transport. We never transport on the ‘backboard’. I didn’t mean transporting on the stair chair, I meant getting the patient into the back of the ambulance on it. We have ramps/tail lifts so that we can wheel the patient onto the ambulance in the carry/stair chair before transferring them into a seat or onto the cot, otherwise you’d have to get the cot off the ambulance and transfer the patient onto it in the open including in the rain etc. Having a ramp/tail lift means we don’t have to do that. We don’t transport everyone on the cot, sometimes they just travel seated.

      @@CymruEmergencyResponder "Tradition" is why it was done for decades. It was our protocol. Not sure who thought strapping somebody to a hard board and bouncing them around in the back of an ambulance for a 30 minute ride was a good idea.
      My area got away from that and does it as you proposed.

    • @PrepMedic
      @PrepMedic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah we use them. I am on the fence, they are super easy to insert but the seal is tenuous and they don’t do a good job at protecting the airway. They basically just help you bag the patient.
