Im a loyal Honda mower fan like you now, after my Troybilt I had for 13 years had finally needed to retire (engine was starting to burn oil and would backfire on occasion). I always wanted a Honda because of the throttle control (Of which doesnt exist on most mowers anymore), the blade stop feature with the engine still running and the hydrostatic transmission (no belts to contend with). I havent looked at your channel line up to see if u did a review of a Snapper mower, but much to my surprise, they are still being made. Looking through all the mowers available besides Honda, Snapper is honestly the only next best option once Honda disappears from the U.S. market. Snapper still uses the fly wheel disc self propel system and was also the first self propelled lawnmower ever made. The mower has a speed control and throttle control, I dont know about a blade stop feature, but anyway, would be awesome if you could get your hands on one of the new Snapper mowers if you havent done a review of one already and give us a review. I'd love to see it in action. My parents used to have an old snapper mower and the thing lasted over 30 years, they are built strong and reliable and at least briggs and straton was doing a better job of their engine builds back then too. We recently got rid of the Snapper mower (only because the handle bar didnt adjust high enough for a 6'3" person as myself so mowing with it was uncomfortable with the handle bar so low and non adjustable, otherwise if the handlebar was height adjustable, Id of hell of on to it, instead I gave it to a landscaping company owned by mexicans who are short and would appreciate it) after I bought a 2nd Honda Mower and brought my slightly older one less than 2 year old HRX217HYA to my parents house since I maintain their yard for them).

Hey JB! For a push-mower, I have an 2005 - 6.5hp craftsman’s 21”, with the B&S Flathead. Works like a little champ. I don’t have a large yard, so it doesn’t get a lot of hours through the grass season (maybe 10-15hr max a year). Works fairly well, do my own maintenance and still starts and runs great :). Thanks for all your videos JB, I bought this exact same mower 3 weeks ago from my Toro dealer. Right off the bat I learned how to take the engine cover off, since this new model has a redesigned cover with the black trim. So I want to pass along how to do it since you won't find information anywhere.
The red cover itself has 2 torx head screws to remove, but there is a hidden one underneath the black trim. To remove the black trim, Stand in front of the machine looking towards the back of the engine, the back of the trim is a tab you push back underneath the red cover, look for the rectangular cutout off the black trim, I used a flat he'd screw drive to push the tab back while lifting a little on the back of the trim. Once you have the loose ther are tabs on each side of the trim just about where the "electric start label is. Push each one towards the center of the trim while lifting a little more on the trim piece. Once you have the 3 tabs released the black trim rotates off the front of the cover and then you will see the last torx screw..
Might be a good subject for you to make a short video on... thanks for what you do.

I have the electric model I bought about a year ago. I love it. I love the quiet, no oil and gas to handle, and I can take the battery out and tip it any way i want without worrying about what is going to spill our. I don't know if they made any improvements, but the rear wheels started to wobble a bit and not be rock solid. Culprit, the plastic inner tube split. Solution, I put a hose clamp on each wheel and reassembled. Problem solved. I did some other mods to make it do what I wanted it to do. I probably should ask for new ones, but eh.

Called the store and the service tech told me how to adjust the personal pace. ?????? 4 times and I am already doing the work on it. Not happy about that, but, I do like the machine. Waited another 3 weeks for a replacement but that came in with a partially broken knob 🤦. First off thank you for the videos that you posted about this Super Recyler from Toro. I ordered one, it came damaged and I had done research for over 3 weeks before I landed on this mower. My unboxing was not like yours, the box was crushed on one end and I should have known from there it was going to be an issue... I took the package anyway and sure enough the push bar was bent and other little things made me think, maybe this is not for me.
Pleasently I watched these videos and went to my local Ace Hardware here in TX and found one already out of the box so I could test everything (while in the store so not EVERYTHING). The bar folded like it was supposed to, the handle locks engaged properly, the air cleaner foam sleeve was not put on poorly and all 4 wheels touched the ground... There is something to be said about retail that gives you that comfort of seeing to believe.
I wanted to double thank you for the spark plug wire hint. I just filled mine with oil and while waiting for the oil to settle I checked the plug wire... Sure enough.... a small push and CLICK!!!!! it was not fully locked in, so I did not get the sputtering but, I think I may not, so thank you for posting this info it is super helpful. After a week of mows I will check back in, I have a thick 3.5 in St Augustine yard about a 1/3 of an acre and will adjust one side to get a flat cut on my edges so I will let you know how it goes making that adjustment each week.
On a side note, for those who do need to adjust for the nice crisp edge it might be worth mentioning that some of the platforms that have just adjustment for the whole deck, the pain of doing all 4 wheels does suck, but to be able to adjust for the specific need does come in handy for all 4 wheels.

The sputtering is easy to fix and has three causes. First, the spark plug boot may not be pushed all the way on. Second, it only comes with only enough oil to fill to the bottom of the acceptable oil fill zone on the dipstick. The engine has an oil level switch and won't run if too little oil is in it. Mow on a hill or hit a bump and the oil sloshes and the oil level switch momentarily turns off, killing the engine for a second. Just add more oil up to to the top of the hashed area on the dipstick. Finally, the factory Champion plugs just misfire. Take your spark plug out and replace it with correct E3 brand spark plug, (E3.20 on mine). Be sure to carefully set the spark gap to what the manual says (0.020" on mine). Regarding the slight variation in wheel height, the wheels have ball bearings and tighter tolerances. With plain bearing wheels there is more bearing play and that lets all wheels touch the floor, therefore you can't detect any wheel diameter difference. Not an issue at all when on grass as the grass is springy. Good mower. Much more nimble than the steel deck versions. I have long arms so the lower handle does not hit my gut. If you have short arms or a big gut, I would not recommend it.

JB, I have this exact mower (21564) and an Ariens 824 that's just a handful of years newer than yours :) I've never had an issue with the motor running smoothly at all. It goes up hills and over bumps like a beast. My neighbors have an electric Toro and it simply does not cut as well as this machine. I have no issues with the shape of the handle. My deck doesn't have the rough edges underneath that yours does. My only real complaint is how the wires are managed/loose. You'll find out when you put it in the stow position. I'm looking forward to your take on sharpening it's blades and changing the oil on an engine that claims only topping up is necessary.
Also, I love the personal pace system. Hands down, I'm so glad I went with the Toro because of this feature alone instead of a Honda.

Great overview. That's a nice-looking mower and I look forward to your review. I was looking at Toro and Honda to replace a 1997 John Deere JX75. The JX75 is still running strong and really has no major issues. It's just getting difficult to find parts for it. Especially the drive train. I went with a Honda HRX217HYA because, as far as I know. None of the modern Toro Recycler series with the exception of the Timemaster have a blade brake. I find it very annoying that the mower completely shuts down when the handle is released. I don't mind the blade stopping. It's just the complete shutdown that's a pain. I still use a Toro Recycler 20333 at my parents' house (circa 2011) that does have a blade brake. It has been a good mower. The in-laws have a front wheel drive non blade brake Toro Recycler. It runs well for an entry-level mower, but I am not a fan of front wheel drive. If you don't have a fairly level lawn. I don't think front wheel drive is a good choice.

One of the problems I have found is the adjustable wheels. They have always been difficult to operate. A big plus is the engine. It has never failed to start. Not sure yet what will take its spot on my trailer this year. I will be watching.

I can't find the charger to buy at the online Toro company, and the ones at Amazon do not have good descriptions (i dont want to fry the battery with the wrong amps). I have the briggs 190 cc engine. Last year, I couldn't decide which mower I wanted: the Toro SS 21564 or the Honda 217 HRX VKA. So I ended up buying both of them. Honestly, it makes mowing the lawn enjoyable.
As for the engine surge in previous models. That issue was corrected with the 21564. From May to November 2022, I experienced no issues with the engine. But I also take care of all my engines to keep them at peak performance. Running a little Berryman B12 Chemtool through the engine once in a while keeps it running strong.
This B&S 190cc is a powerhouse and had no trouble keeping up with the Honda 200cc in tall grass. The engine also has a nice growl when it shuts off.

Great video! Do you have an update on the 2023 SR, maybe vs. a Honda? Based on what have read & viewed the Honda HRX217HYA & Super Recycler(21565), are 2 great mowers. To me cut quality is most important, bagging second, self-propelled is not mandatory, but would be very nice for walking in lieu of riding. On the surface, the self-propelled controls on both appear that they can be cumbersome on a smaller lawn when changing directions, but not sure. I 100% agree with your overall critiques. I owned a 2022 60v version of this mower last year and ended up returning it. Left front wheel wouldn’t touch the ground when level (deck not level?), “steering wheel” personal pace system is too large and very difficult to navigate in tighter spaces compared to previous, handlebars weren’t level due to a bent mount on the mower itself, bag wouldn’t sit flush to the back, personal pace adjustment screw stuck out about 1/2” too far and caught my arm a couple of times going for the bag, mulch plug is a joke to get in and out. It’s a real bummer because I think that the previous super recyclers were fantastic. Their design choices for this mower are highly questionable and the QC is abysmal considering the price point and how much competition is coming up in the OPE segment.

There are a few other reasons why I skipped Toro altogether: The transmissions on them are lacklustre at best, on the BBC models are belt based, the Personal Pace doesn't use a hydrostatic transmission, but belt tension for variable speed and more often than not, when I cut someone's grass and they wanted it really short, I tend to easily scalp people's lawns more than I ever did with any other make. I also considered Cub Cadet at one point but went with the Honda HRC2163HXC, the top of the line and commercial Honda mower sold in Canada. The deck on that Toro looks really robust other than the painting defects, in fact, it really resembles the Honda HR(C)214/215 decks. Now, that said, I really do like Toro's older snow blowers as I have one but replaced the Tecumseh engine with a Honda GX160. I can't say much about Toro's newer snow throwers but they do intrigue me a bit. Now, if I wanted to buy a 30" walk behind mower, I would definitely go SCAG as those are incredibly robust, fairly easy to work on machines and the fact that they have my favourite North American engine brand, the Kohler Command Pro.

It ran well 95% of the time but did sporadically sputter. I’m going to do mow #3 with unleaded 89 octane (10% ethanol blend) to see what happens. If I end up getting it serviced it’s a minimum 4-5 week turn time. Luckily I still have the mower that the 21564 is replacing.

The following day, I received an email from Home Depot apologizing that they'd have to refund my money and cancel my order, no explanation. Today, I visited with Customer Service at my local Home Depot to inquire about what happened. All they could offer was that the 21564 is "no longer available" at Home Depot. Next, I phoned Home Depot's national number to ask them the same. They told me a little more. They said that these units aren't stocked in the Home Depot warehouse but come from a "3rd party distributor," and that they must have been pulled for some reason and are no longer for sale. 190cc in a store stock mower is rayer. They do send a side discharge chute. Same with the AWD lawn boy from 2015. Easy to register and they ship it fast. But wait. Doesn't the deck benefit from NOT having a big chunk missing from it?

I’ve used a 2015 Toro super recycler since new and recently I decided it was getting a little underpowered in taller grass. Very reliable with only one repair to the drive wheel cable needed.
I went with a Honda HRX217. After 2 mows, it would not start!! Checked the oil and it was mixed with gas!! It was too late to return it to HD, so I took it for warranty. They said, “oh yeah, we’ve seen a few like yours, you did nothing wrong.”
I thought I was making a big upgrade with the Honda , but I will sell this or trade it as soon as they repair it. My old toro still starts on the first pull. I’ll get with a new Toro. I much prefer the personal pace over Honda’s separate throttle lever and double bail system, too.

The poll makes perfect sense even if Honda was not going to get out of the home-owner mower business. I looked at the Honda too and pushed both. The Honda fit and finish is nicer, I like the alternator to charge the battery, it has spin-stop for the blade so you don't need to shut the engine down, it has a bigger bag, you can easily switch between mulch and bag, and it's the same price as the Toro. The problem for the Honda is the end game is mowing the lawn. The Honda is a LOT harder to horse around, especially back up. It weighs 20% more than the super recycler and handles like it weighs 2x the super recycler. The next problem is Honda's legacy engineering. Honda's plastic deck traps crap and water on top of the deck next to the motor. The twin blades don't mulch any better than the Toro. Compared to the Toro, the Honda self-propel is quite the contraption plus a complex hydro-static drive which is bonkers for a push mower. With the Toro, you run it. With the Honda, it runs you. If the Honda didn't have the blade stop and alternator, it would have gotten a lot less than 37%. This comes from a guy who has two vehicles, both with the Acura (high-end Honda) powertrain. As much as I would like to buy the Honda, the end game is mowing the lawn. Honda can't compete with Toro with that kind of engineering.

I personally like to keep machines going. Mowers cost way too much nowadays. I heard a lot of good thing about the scag mowers. Only issue I heard was that they are heavy and the big tires can rip up the lawn! Lots to think about here! Thanks for watching

    • @Vultain
      @Vultain ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@GarageGear I definitely prefer keeping them going and do keep up maintenance on it! Just hitting the crossroads of how viable is this mower to keep maintained? I am starting to vote as it has hit it's limit, and run it until it dies or start actively replacing it now.
A bit of history on the mower. I purchased it used for $75 back in 2010? I bought it around 3 years old, I think it is a 2006-2007 Toro with a Briggs 6.75 on it. The oil was sludge when I removed it(I doubt it was maintained). I got it that cheap due to the fact the deck was so clogged the mower wouldn't turn over. It's the recycler with the large wheels. It was used to mow one acre twice a week for what should have been temporary became 3 years. I didn't want to constantly move the Exmark onto the property. My Dad's been using it since late 2013- early 2014 onwards.
Always been given new air filters twice a year since(pollen and smoke season is tough here), annual spark plug, and sometimes 3 oil changes.
My Dad will hook up the hose attachment and run it. But it only gets scraped or pressure washed out once or twice a year by me. Usually end of season I'll spray the deck with something to prevent rust, tires greased, etc.
But the transmission is almost shot and needs replaced, the belt for sure does and it might limp slowly the rest of the season, the side guard needs replacing, the handle os rusting, it needs a new pull cord, the deck is extremely rusted(it's creepy upwards to the deck), the engine compression is weakening, and it is starting to burn oil and sometimes leak it. It's hard for it to keep the power and rpms it once did.
I put Royal Purple in it to track the leaks better, but am wondering if I shouldn't try a UV additive instead to determine the leak? It needs a new gas cap(seals broken on the current one), the handle bars are rusting, the wheels are gone, and the height adjusters still move but are covered in rust.
I could easily turn it into a project if I want to rebuild the engine and get new seals and parts. I work 60+ hours a week unfortunately, and can't do that in a timely manner. Given everything it would be easier to work a few extra hours of overtime and buy new.
He needs to use this mower 2-3 times a week. He mows roughly 15,000 square feet and bag mows. I can keep it running but as things are it's taking time for me to come fill his oil(my Dad has sight issues and can't see the dipstick) and everything else.
But I suppose my question is, at what point is it worth putting the time, money, and effort into a mower like this? I mean, I don't mind putting money into it but a shop quoted him fixes that put it above and beyond what a new model is worth. He also has gripes with the Toro and doesn't like how the bag won't fill all the way up.
He primarily bags his lawn. He's used my Exmark but struggles without an Autochoke and the weight of it. He loves the cut quality.
He doesn't have the funds to buy a new mower and he hates me buying a new one for him. But for my sanity sake it seems like the best option.
I was either looking at the Toro you bought, or a Honda for him. The personal pace system is easier on him but given the fact he doesn't take care of it I was wondering if the Honda wouldn't be easier? He hates feathering a bar for a transmission.
His whole concern with the Honda is he is worried about the inability to buy parts for it local. I buy all the parts as is and with the exception of air filters, spark plugs and oil, nothing is sold local. He owned an Ariens in the past, so I don't understand the concern.
The goal for me is to get something that will last 15 years under the current care regime. The Skag would be something I would love to upgrade to given the 30" and that sounds like it should last until Doomsday. I've never had a Kohler Engine though, I'm not sure how they compare to Briggs/Kawasaki/or Honda?
I might sell the Exmark 21" and use the proceeds to fund most of his mower. Then buy the Skag for myself.
I guess like a lot of things in life it just comes down to The Toro 190CC you have in the video, or a Honda. He's a retired military veteran and worked for the government his whole life. Has had 10+ major spinal surgeries, etc. So whichever you think might push better for him would be an asset.
If I could get a hold of the commercial lightweight Toro they discontinued in the late 2000's or early 2010's. The old Lawnboy design that would have been ideal! Amazing lawn mower, super lightweight, and I regret buying the Exmark over it! But if wishes were fishes... Thanks again, sorry for the long comment. My Dad's in his 70's but good health, so this will be the final mower and I want to get whatever would fit him best. His entire life he has never had a "new mower". So with Father's day and his birthday at almost the same time. I want to surprise him with it! $1000 with tax is my hard cap though.
A local dealer has the Toro through the end of the month for $799. May 1st it goes back to $899. So the price is right, just waiting to hear your verdict from you given the engine issues. You are right, lots of questionable issues people have had with it. But at 5 years on the warranty and a local Toro dealer if it's not a fatal flaw it might be viable. I can do the engine break in of 6-10 hours, before I hand it over. Usually I do a 20 minute oil change, idle for 5 minutes, put the engine under load for 15 and dump at 20, mow the yard and change again when done, and then at 5-6 hours. Probably overkill but oil is cheap and my Uncle who was a small engine mechanic recommended that for all Briggs or mowers when new. He also always suggested idling the mower for 5 minutes before putting a load on it(I never asked why). He passed away due to Covid unfortunately or I'd ask him for his take, or knowing him he'd probably rebuild the current Toro if it were feasible.
As for issues, given what you said, my curiosity is it a QC issue or user issue? Usually Toro pregaps the spark plugs so I doubt it is that. it makes me wonder if there is a QC issue with the newer Briggs, a lack of oil changes, or what might be wrong with the engines?

I'm definitely looking forward to hearing your verdict on the Toro too. But all good things in time. Sometimes catching something on sale isn't the best way to shop either, better to wait on a clear answer.
On a side note I think a good suggestion for you, would be to do a video on when you should put a mower out to pasture or work on rebuilding/fixing it. An oz of prevention is worth a pound of cure certainly, and I think proper maintenance and storage you can get 15-20 years out of a residential mower. But even the best of maintenance habits only take you so far unfortunately before you have to weigh cost effectiveness, especially when everything starts to go at once. And how to diagnose that.
I know I personally destroyed an engine crank shaft, as a kid by accidentally running over a tree stump in tall grass while mowing. The repair was worth more than the mower back then at least.
In summary it would be great video or series to determine when something is going to be a money pit or it's worth fixing. Maybe even show an engine rebuild on the channel? Or one where you resurface the deck and everything. Probably hard to do with everything else you do, but it could make for an amazing series one day!
There are some amazing vintage mowers out there! It would be cool to see that or even something loved, taken care of, but used well, be restored. While not always financially feasible, it does keep something out of a landfill and in use. It could be a great series! You've definitely done similar things though already with the old family Toro and what not. I suppose I'd be curious what you'd choose as a project mower?

I think the reason Torp went with the rainbow design for the Toro because of the new Ariens Razor Mowers. Their reflex drive andle bar looks like it should of been installed on the Super Recyclers.

If I may ask since I just bought my first house and looking to get my first mower. I'm actually torn between lawn three mowers and wanted to see what you would recommend since I have zoysia grass on my back hill.
I'm trying to decide between a Toro Super Recycler with the electric start, Honda HRX217VKA or the new Ariens Razor X with the Briggs 875exi engine.
All has their pros and cons but Im looking to get a mower that will last.
My Aunt has a Ariens Razor from 2013 and it's still going strong 10 years later and no rust.
My Uncle's Toro is over 20 years old and still starts with the first pull.

@@thegreatempire3882 hey empire! If you can knab that Honda I would go for it. There just built better. The toro has cheaper points nowadays compared to other models. Their engine quality isn’t where it used to be. The Ariens I heard has plastic gears in the drive wheels. Those will probably only last about two years or so. You can’t go wrong with the Honda. I’ll be reviewing on in a week or two! Stay tuned!

In the new Ariens that they are releasing this year?
The one more aunt had purchased is over 10 years old and still going strong. If it has plastic gearing, it's definitely holding up.

@@GarageGear which Honda model number compares to the Super Cycler/s by toro in regards to (how it cuts up the cuttings underneath the deck ) for small clippings ? i plan to mulch 50% of the time... 8000 total sq feet of personal lawn (1/2 tall fescue otger half bermuda) so I do some mowing year around. and yes i need to get to 4" of mowing height for the fescue for three or five months of the year (heat is incredible in Oklahoma). thanks

Personal pace sucks, I had a toro snow thrower with personnel pace. It's not a smooth, consistent speed.
I still prefer a go or stop, with a front wheel drive.
Also, this mowers under deck is over designed.
Cast aluminum deck is more brittle than stamped steel.
    Plus, this mower is heavy.
I like toro mowers with simple practical design.
I am brutal to my lawn mowers. Sticks, pine cones, wood chips I chop them all up. Eventually, I break them and buy another. But, they hold up well considering the abuse I send them to.
Want to clean the bottom of the deck. Run over wood chips it will blast all the grass off without getting the deck wet. I use my tools hard. My mower is no exception.
My advice is a simple design. Not even a self-propelled but a push.
I'm older now, so I spoil myself with a self-propelled

Note on the side discharge attachment. The reason why one has to request one is for waste reduction and offered to only those that want/need it. Sound reasoning actually.
