Immensely enjoyed the Orkney series. I’ve been to Kirkwall, Stromness & places in-between. No worries AT ALL about the reroute from Papa Westray. Like you said, it’s a darn good reason to return. Happy trails & travels! 🥾

For me I think sitting by the pilot would be definitely worth the price. Flying the shortest scheduled air route would come a close second. A great video as always.

Ok, I know you were disappointed, but let’s be honest, wasn’t that the best flight ever both going there and back, what an absolute honour to be sitting right there to enjoy the spectacular views. Though I’d be terrified about touching anything! Lol I don’t have a car now, but still want to head up to explore Orkney mainland and will use the Stagecoach buses when up there

A funny thing happened to us on Westray. We had booked to stay in the Pierowall Hotel and were arriving on bicycles on the ferry. If you drive there from the ferry its very quick - its not a long distance by bicycle but of course its slower than by car, maybe half an hour (cant quite remember). Anyway, we cycled down there from the ferry and when we got there they were very surprised to see us. “But we booked”, we said, to which the landlord’s response was “well, we knew you were coming and when you didnt arrive off the ferry we presumed you would arrive on Friday”. The point is, thats how time works on Orkney. If it takes a couple of days who cares - time is very relaxed there - as you found out when the flight didnt go to Westray, nobody bats an eyelid, you will arrive some time. Maybe that’s how you should think of visiting Westray .. maybe it will take a few attempts to get there :-)

The issue will be due to "density altitude" if its a hot day. The warmer air is thinner, and therefore its the same as operating at a higher altitude. The engines have less power and the wing develops less lift, so the aircraft doesnt perform as well. If Westray is a short airstrip and the aircraft is heavy (fuel, pax and freight weight) it may not meet the legal safety margins for a commercial operation. In winter when the temps are colder, the air is denser, so this is less likely to happen then.

Hi Steve. I love the fact that the local school has a little basic exercise book... (well that's what we call them in Australia 😂)...; in a Ziploc bag, and in a tin to protect it, for visitors to sign ❤.
And the "wee hoose" at the Bothie museum, full of so many interesting items.
I noticed, of all things in it , the bottle of Swan Ink !
Way, way back in primary school, in Victoria, Australia, it was the compulsory ink for our fountain pens !
And I got into trouble, because my mum got me a different brand !!
Now...back to the flight. What a lovely pilot you had, to take on the role of your guide as well, including the small detour to show you and all of us the sights, on the return leg !
Looking forward to when you succeed 😊

Between Scott @planestrainseverything almost being arrested in Germany and your almost-but-not-quite flight it's been quite the week for a couple of our favourite Scottish youtubers. Not a bad thing to have to return to Orkney, really. Interesting that winter is the best time to have a greater chance at catching that flight. I have to say I loved the little guestbook in the ziplock bag in the tin, and the fact that the museum is open, unattended, with its exhibits set out, labeled, to be enjoyed independently and unsecured. That trust (that seems to be rewarded) restores faith in humanity in some ways, doesn't it.

Fabulous. This video brought back many happy memories of my time living on Orkney. The hostel on Papay is a wee gem of a place. I have managed the shortest flight and I look forward to watching your return to get it done.

Reminded me of my grandparents house in County Sligo in 1968!! They had no running water and electricity had only arrived in 1966. But we loved that house - it was magic!!! We were originally from Scotland (though our parents were Irish).Ended up staying in Ireland(don't ask) .But of course if I can remember 1968 I'm a fair bit older than you Steve!!

Another great video Steve! Such a shame you didn't make the shortest flight this time. As you say it's a good excuse to return. Brings back memories of trying to get to Fair Isle from Shetland for my 40th a few years ago. 2 failed attempts during our weeks holiday up there, oh well. We did however make it over to the Out Skerries to watch a film in the tiny Schoolhouse cinema which I'm led to believe has now sadly closed. All the best, James

Your time on Papay though at least brought back some great memories for me, I got a sticker from the school box, walked some fantastic beaches and yes the hostel on a Saturday night I can definitely recommend. Looking on the bright side, you’ve got multiple times more views on this video than mine where I did actually do the flight! 😂😂 There’s always a next tme 👍

I'd have just stayed the night and tried again the next day, as long as you were there. But, that is probably easier said than done in such a remote location. Orkney is on my short bucket list. Thanks for the video and the info on requesting the "catbird seat."
