I Broke My Favorite Ultralight Rod... The Pursuit Of A 10 [EPISODE 3]

  • Welcome back to a mini-series... The Pursuit Of A 10! This series is all about seeking out & catching trophy-class Bluegill. As a multispecies angler, I have grown to love Bluegill not only as a neat part of the ecosystem, but also as a truly prominent sportfish. What I have found, however, is that Bluegill tend to earn 1 of 2 reputations - they can be either a "beginner fish" or a "fill the freezer fish". I definitely believe they are far greater than those two stereotypes. I believe they are a true sportfish and you know what else is great about them? They are pretty much everywhere!
    My goal is simple with this mini-series... Build confidence in my big bluegill hunting skills & catch a 10" gill along the way. Michigan considers a 10" Bluegill a "Master Angler" Fish - essentially implying that it is a trophy in our waters. I definitely feel I can accomplish this goal throughout the course of this series, however time will tell. Ultimately, I just want to continue to flex my multispecies muscles and learn more about targeting and patterning large bluegill. Throughout this series, I will obviously be fishing a lot but I also intend to include some informative biology information so we can all learn to be better conservationists and help create better big bluegill fisheries for years to come.
    In this episode, I target a new body of water which is larger than the first two and features deeper water. Unfortunately, I broke my favorite ultralight on this trip but I did learn a few things so it wasn't all bad. Definitely excited to keep the series going!

    I totally relate to how you feel, loosing a great rod is a big loss but sometimes inevitable in the angling business we're in. I do prefer straight mono on my panfish set ups, I'm an old timer and believe me, Stren original has carried me a long way.

    • @FishAnything

    Every lake differs due to vegetation and depth but i have always found the largest bluegills in 3-5 feet of water in the pockets or edges of tall reed beds, depending on the wind usually just go to one side and let the wind carry through and just hit the pockets and edges, then reposition and go back through

    I'm too new at fishing so this is not advice. Consider it a theory. If you want to catch bigger fish use bigger tackle? I know you like 1/64 and micro-size but maybe it's not just location. Maybe a lure that would make a 10" crappie take some notice. I'm a big boy. I can afford to let a candy bar or a doughnut float on by while I'm waiting on the NY Strip or Porterhouse to grab my attention.
    Sorry about the rod. I broke the handle on my Patriarch a few days ago and have no real backup. Another lesson learned from you... I need to get a secondary setup.

    • @fantomphoenix6170
      @fantomphoenix6170 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not always the case.
      Bigger lures will weed out smaller fish, but smaller lures are more tempting to them (from what I have seen) and you get more fish.
      If you get more fish you can see where the fish are grouped up easier, and just keep filtering through fish until you get a bigger one or move on to a new school.
      By “from what I have seen” I was fishing a river and saw a nice pike,I started off on a bigger paddle tail, hopping it across the bottom, tried that about 20 times, switched on over to a small paddle tail, similar to the ones he’s using, and lost it to the 3 1/2 4ft pike I saw.
      That’s just 1 example.
      I like to think of little baits being more opportunities

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I definitely think that larger profiles will draw the attention of larger fish in most cases (especially for bass). That said, Bluegill primarily feed on small aquatic insects and plankton. Going bigger in profile than the DT Jr. would probably increase my rate of catch on juvenile bass but would probably reduce my Bluegill catch rate significantly. I definitely plan to keep experimenting with other presentations however I think the profile I am using is about where I need to be.

    • @timothythompson6549
      @timothythompson6549 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing about bluegill is even really big ones still have tiny mouths. So a 10 incher may not be able to eat something significantly bigger than what a 6 incher would eat.

    • @FishAnything

      This was the 6'2 one piece Sierra Trout & Panfish. It is a fantastic rod. I simply would avoid using braid on it due to the solid rod tip.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you warn about that happening in your line selection vid using that exact rod? That sucks though. Im sorry that happened.

      Lol I can't recall but I have always known it was a risk too. Usually I am really good about seeing it before it being an issue. It was bound to happen to me eventually - can't believe this is the first time. Regardless, not the rod's fault. It was my fault for being a dumby XD

    That sucks that you broke your rod. About a week ago I broke my Shakespeare Micro Series 4.6ft. I almost gave up for the day because I was so mad. Good job on not getting too angry. By the way, don’t buy Shakespeare Micro Series 4.6ft. The 5ft is stronger but the 4.6 is not.

    I wonder if they would have asked for 80$ if you said that it snapped during the hookset (and not imply a user error with the braid wrapped around the tip). Either way that kind of sucks...do you plan to send it or are you looking for some other option?

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will cut it down to the logo portion and send it with $80. I debated just calling it quits on this rod but I really like this rod way too much. It was my fault so I was honest with them - they are nice to offer the policy they do.

    Is this inherent of all ultralights? I just bought the 7'4'' model UL. I'm a bass and musky guy so I don't have anything lighter than a light.
    How about an update on the warranty. This is why I buy ST Croix rods, 15 year no questions asked. Used to be lifetime. But I'm Ok with 15.
    Subed . great channel! Oh one more question, What is your favorite reel and size? thank you.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! This rod breaking was totally my fault. The Dobyns rod features a solid tip which makes it super thin. Using braid on it was probably a dumb idea from the start... Because it was my fault, I paid $80 for a brand new rod from Dobyns (which is pretty fair in my eyes). Had it been a rod defect, they would have sent me a free one.
      Most UL rods handle braid fine. I would just advise against using it on a solid-tipped rod.
      And my favorite reel is my Daiwa Tatula LT 1000. Whether you go Shimano or Daiwa or whatever, I recommend a size 1000. It just flat out works!

  • @davidnewton3064

    Sorry to hear about your rod. What was the $80 for? Is that just for shipping or does Dobyns charge you a percentage of MSRP to replace yours?

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it was not a rod failure and it was my fault, they basically have a program to replace the rod for $80 ($60 for the new rod and $20 for the shipping). All I have to do is mail in the logo portion of the rod. Honestly, that is a really fair program. It wasn't the rod's fault, it was mine. So the fact that they give me a more affordable way to get a new one is pretty neat!

    That's not good! So the other day I was watching a few of your older vidoeson the Nedrig! Is that the only finesse bait you use for bass fishing or do you use others like Wacky rigs or Shakeyhead! I'm just trying to work with something that works! Used the Ned rig the other day I did work. Just overwhelmed with everything out there these days!

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love all finesse fishing but Ned Rig is definitely my go-to. In my area, we have a lot of offshore weed-beds and clear water. It makes it very solid for Ned Rig fishing. Wacky rigs are awesome for fishing specific targets with (brush piles, docks, etc.). Shaky heads tend to perform great on hard bottoms but I don't like them around grass so I don't throw them anymore. I used to crush fish on them in Kansas though. And I love a drop shot when I am working off deeper in the water column. Good luck!
