Interviewing Fisheries Biologists About BIG BLUEGILL BEHAVIOR! The Pursuit Of A 10 [EPISODE 4]

  • Welcome back to a mini-series... The Pursuit Of A 10! This series is all about seeking out & catching trophy-class Bluegill. As a multispecies angler, I have grown to love Bluegill not only as a neat part of the ecosystem, but also as a truly prominent sportfish. What I have found, however, is that Bluegill tend to earn 1 of 2 reputations - they can be either a "beginner fish" or a "fill the freezer fish". I definitely believe they are far greater than those two stereotypes. I believe they are a true sportfish and you know what else is great about them? They are pretty much everywhere!
    Ben Neely: / bencneely
    Connor Ossowski: / chanskicco
    My goal is simple with this mini-series... Build confidence in my big bluegill hunting skills & catch a 10" gill along the way. Michigan considers a 10" Bluegill a "Master Angler" Fish - essentially implying that it is a trophy in our waters. I definitely feel I can accomplish this goal throughout the course of this series, however time will tell. Ultimately, I just want to continue to flex my multispecies muscles and learn more about targeting and patterning large bluegill. Throughout this series, I will obviously be fishing a lot but I also intend to include some informative biology information so we can all learn to be better conservationists and help create better big bluegill fisheries for years to come.
    In this episode, I interview two freshwater fisheries biologists to learn more about Bluegill behavior and what we as anglers can do to help create larger fish potential in our waters. Such a great conversation - I learned a lot and can't thank Ben & Connor enough. Sorry for the low quality but hopefully you learned a lot. You can treat this like a podcast and listen in the car or while out fishing!

    LOVED this. I'm always down to learn. It'd be great if you could do something like this for a number of different species. I'd enjoy hearing about bass, muskies, pickerel, pike, trout, etc.

      Thank you! The Pursuit Of A 10 is just one mini-series and I hope to do more in the future on other species. Fisheries Biologists and fish facts will always be something I hope to include. Great suggestion :)

    Ive thought from the past of keeping only smaller panfish in the spawn time was the best way to harvest and not impact the the fishery negatively, but now I feel as if I was wrong and should wait until fish are done spawning for a catch and cook. This kind of insight is so facinating to me, and thats half the reason im watching fishing content on youtube, to learn! Many people make videos on how to catch a certain fish but they don't tend to make videos and how to preserve the species.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad you liked it! And don't feel bad by any means about that. Nothing wrong with keeping a few, but like they said, turning the big males back is how the fisheries will stay healthy (especially during the spawn). Definitely some interesting stuff - I hope to do more vids like this in the future!

    I caught a donkey monster bluegill at Oak Mtn State Park in Birmingham, AL on a TRD Ned rig last Saturday. By far my PB bluegill. I was really sad I didn’t have a tape to measure it, should have held up against my fishing rod or something to get an estimate. Another good vid, thanks!

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah every now and then, you get a sunfish on bass gear and it's a behemoth. Really speaks to the fact that they are opportunistic feeders.
      Congrats on the nice catch! Even though you didn't get a length, the good news is you caught it. That's the best part :)

    Maybe bring them back every so often. I learned a whole lot. Or, maybe invite biologists from other states as they may look at things differently. Now I'm going to search for any videos or blogs from VA Fisheries Biologists to see what I can learn about the rivers around here. Thanks!

  • @ldsudduthhanover
    @ldsudduthhanover 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That was awesome. It's a polarizing issue--but the science doesn't lie..it's the same for all species..you want the BIG ones to survive and breed, and that only happens if you let them alone to breed..

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dang right man! Definitely pros & cons to each side but ultimately if we want trophies, we gotta do our part. Nothing wrong with keeping fish, just do so responsibly and respectfully.

    • @FishAnything

      I reaffirmed several things and learned a lot of new things. Honestly, the fact that an abundance of vegetation usually creates an environment of smaller sunfish makes so much sense but I never would have thought of that.

      Ben spoke about it a good bit unfortunately the connection got all funky. Definitely an important topic. Ultimately it all boils down to holding them with care and returning them to the water quickly. In today's age of social media, lots of folks unfortunately do things for pictures/videos and don't treat the fish with care.
      I will try to incorporate this topic in future videos. Good feedback!
