Eddie Murphy turned down being in Ghostbusters for Beverly Hills Cop. But it turned out well for everyone, since both movies were the two biggest hits of 1984.
Except for Ernie Hudson or at least that what he says. I agree with Ernie Hudson that Eddie being a big star at that time he most certainly been paid more than Hudson for starring in Ghostbusters.

Ironically, the actor who played Axel's boss, Inspector Todd (Gilbert R. Hill), was a real life gangster who was not to be trifled with. He was connected to crooked politicians in Detroit, and he was a real police chief of the Detroit Police Department. He used his power and influence in that city to do crime. He even put out hits on people. Crazy.

That tough Detroit police inspector was played by a tough Detroit police inspector, Gilbert Hill. The casting director spotted him. He was on Detroit's city council and later ran for mayor (he lost). Japanese school? Are you from Japan? There's a TH-cam channel which belongs to Oriental Pearl. Apparently most of the interactions between Judge Reinhold and John Ashton (Rosewood and Taggart) were also improvised. Their character brief was basically that they’re an old, bickering married couple-hence we get scenes like Rosewood nagging Taggart about having too much red meat in his diet. Eddie Murphy has an insane amount of talent and charisma. It's a matter of time until he gets an Oscar. I love the character of Lt. Bogomill. Ronny Cox did a great job of selling Bogomill as a by-the-numbers police officer. As the movie rolls along and the evidence mounts against Maitland, Bogomill warms up to Foley and, in the end, he has his officers' backs. When he hears there are shots fired and his people are in the area, Bogomill sends all the police in half of Beverly Hills to back them up, no questions asked. That's a really good commanding officer. I'd recommend _BHC2,_ but _BHC3_ is too over the top.
Agree. And in BHC2, not only is it immediately established that Axel and the Beverly Hills boys have become close personally, but Bogomil tells Chief Lutz (who is The Worst 😂) that he encourages his officers to use their instincts and follow their hunches, showing how much Axel’s influence has rubbed off on him professionally. (And credit to Ronny Cox for being just as convincing as the utterly evil Dick Jones in _Robocop_ that same year.)
This was the movie that put Eddie over the top. The director, Martin Breast, was the hotel employee at the desk at the end of the film. Beverly Hills Cop 2 was just as great, Beverly Hills Cop 3 was not quite as good, but still a lot of fun. This summer a fourth, Beverly Hills Cop:Axel F, will premiere on Netflix. Eddie, John Ashton (Taggart), Judge Reinhold (Billy), Bronsot Pinchot (Serge), and Paul Reiser (Jeffrey) will appear, as will new characters played by Kevin Bacon and Joseph Gordon Levitt.
@30:35 A lot of people don’t realize how important it was that Billy waited to help Axel. If he’d have gone too soon, he’d have been outnumbered and likely killled. If he’d waited too long, Axel would’ve likely been killled.
Eddie Murphy is a legend. During the scene about "The Super Cops" lie watch Taggert pinch his eyes tryna get thru the scene without smiling & he could not. He tried his best but Eddie is hilarious. My favorite Eddie Murphy movie, another is his 1st movie 48 Hrs. He & Nick Nolte were good. He did a good job.
You probably don't recognize the other actors in this but Paul Reiser, Jeffrey, was in Aliens, Ronny Cox, Chief of police, was in Robocop, Lisa Eilbacher, Jeannette was in Officer and a Gentlemen, Johnathan Banks, Zack, was in Breaking Bad, Steven Berkoff, Victor Maitland, was in Rambo 2, Judge Reinhold, Det Billy, was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Home Alone, all classic movies and shows.
Achara's unintentional dig at Detroit at the start was hilarious. I saw this film in the cinema when it was first released, it was great with an audience.
1. Movie magic: An entire truck loaded with EMPTY cigarette boxes.🙄 2. IMVHO Eddies' best movies are "Trading Places and "Coming to America"😎😎 3. Serge/Bronson Pinchot was in a funny series "Perfect Strangers". 4. Jenny/Lisa Eilbacher played Segar in "An Officer and a Gentleman" HINT HINT 5. Maitland/Steven Koff is one of the best bad guys ever!😁 He also played the Soviet Colonel in Rambo II. 6. Billy/Judge Reinhold played Brad Hamilton in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High".
You forgot about Zack(the right hand of Maitland)/Jonathan Banks is one of the most badass character in Breaking Bad and Better Call Soul... Mike!!! 😁😁
Judge Reinhold(Billy), John Ashton(Taggart) and Eddie Murphy(Axel) improvised most of their lines. 12:55 the banana in the tailpipe was supposed to be potatoes but due to scheduling and budget issues they couldn’t film the scene of Axel getting the potatoes from the kitchen so they had bananas on set and grabbed them. 20:39 this scene is what happens when Eddie Murphy has caffeine. He was feeling sluggish while filming this scene and they kept offering Eddie coffee to help stay awake but didn’t like any kind of artificial stimulation. He gave in and had a cup of coffee. Ashton had his hand on his face pinching his nose to keep from laughing cause Eddie’s whole supercop bit wasn’t in the script and he and Reinhold was trying not to ruin the scene. Reinhold was pinching his own thigh while listening to the supercop routine. 26:22 the paper in his hand is the script to the movie. He was given the changes before he came on scene. The sequels are just as good. The way Billy grows during the next two movies I can’t wait to see what they do with him in the fourth one that comes out soon.
The actor who played Victor Maitland, Steven Berkhoff, also played the main villain, Col. Podovsky, in "Rambo: First Blood Part II" & one of the 2 main villains, Gen. Orlov, in the Bond film "Octopussy".
Steven Berkoff is mainly a theatre director, one who created a very unusual style called Berkovian theatre, and he has said that he does Hollywood movies to fund his stage projects.
Sylvester Stallone was originally intended to play the lead role. Stallone took the script and revised it to a more brooding story that became COBRA (1986)
Also you have to understand this was a time period when we barely saw a Black person starring in a major budget movie and also correct culturally Black expressions weren’t seen in big budget movies. Eddie was an absolute breath of fresh air, and with his talent, it was an explosion, and all around the world we were rooting for him!
Lt. Bogomil was played by Ronny Cox. Cox was later known for his part in Robocop in 1987, and BHC II which also came out in '87 (2 months apart). However, he was also in a classic old film called "Deliverance" (1972) with Burt Reynolds. He played a guitar duet with a local southern banjo player (the famous "Dueling Banjo's" song). Deliverance was a thriller/drama/survival story of a some friendly guys vacation canoe trip gone very, very bad. It also starred Jon Voight (Angelina Jolie's father). This was 3 years before Jolie was born.
This movie has a special place in my heart. It was the first rated R movie that my parents let me watch. when I was five years old. I watched it so much I wore out the VHS. I called it the Big Truck movie bcuz of the beginning, and any time I heard the Axol Folley song it was the big truck song 🎵
Between Beverly Hills Cop, 48 hours, Coming to America, and Trading Places, Eddie Murphy ruled the 80s. I never saw the third movie, but the second one is good and worth a watch, Another great, underrated comedy cop movie is Hollywood Homicide (2003), with Josh Hartnett and Harrison Ford.
I can tell you right now, Beverly Hills Cop 2 is also worth a watch, it's hilarious and just awesome. Boomerang and The Nutty Professor are worth watching too, their great movies
@33:01 Billy’s bravery is generally under-appreciated here. He stood in the line of fire and carefully aimed before shooting. Some may say he was dumb, but to me, that’s a badas- moment.
Such a fun movie, I love the comedy and the relationships. I especially appreciate that men were telling each other that they love each other without any of that weird macho disclaimer nonsense. It is beautiful in its naturalness and heart. And you two were great reacting throughout, it was fun watching and listening to you.
7:26 Bronson Pinchot stole every scene with that character and next to Eddie, that wasn't easy. He took that character all the way to the hit TV show Perfect Strangers.
He was also corrupt and tried to hire a hit man to kill an FBI informant that wanted reveal information about Hill who got payed a bribe by a major drug dealer in order to quash the investigation into a 13- year-old boy's murder.

Also Paul Reiser who played Axel's Chicago cop buddy was the corporate stooge in Aliens.
He was also in Community.
@@Cheepchipsable Don't forget Mad About You, Stranger Things and Reboot.
oh my god i didn't even recognize him
Everybody loves Eddie Murphy ❤ and these films are amazing, staples of my childhood 😂😂 make sure you watch them all.
Can't believe they didn't ever watched this movie ..! They're reaction was awesome ...
Ronny Cox - Cohagen in Total Recall too 😎
Judge Reinhold was in Gremlins, Fast Times, the Beethoven movies and The Santa Clause. He was *not* in Home Alone.
@@wartyrant8627Not to mention _Deliverance._
Your faces are adorable , practically smiling through the whole thing. Just a good movie, good writing and comedy
Achara's unintentional dig at Detroit at the start was hilarious. I saw this film in the cinema when it was first released, it was great with an audience.
hilarious, when you said he's got bananas up his tailpipe.
🤣
42:28 Exactly, you can see that switch in his brain get tripped when he goes into being 'Ramon'. 😂
1. Movie magic: An entire truck loaded with EMPTY cigarette boxes.🙄
2. IMVHO Eddies' best movies are "Trading Places and "Coming to America"😎😎
3. Serge/Bronson Pinchot was in a funny series "Perfect Strangers".
4. Jenny/Lisa Eilbacher played Segar in "An Officer and a Gentleman" HINT HINT
Mike!!! 😁😁
You also forgot about Ronny Cox, who played Lt. Bogomill. He also played Dick Jones in _Robocop_ and Cohaagen in _Total Recall._
Eddie Murphy. Pure charisma. And you are the best two reactors I'd ever ask for with this movie.
The actor who played Victor Maitland, Steven Berkhoff, also played the main villain, Col. Podovsky, in "Rambo: First Blood Part II" & one of the 2 main villains, Gen. Orlov, in the Bond film "Octopussy".
"We are a peace loving republic." While torturing Rambo.
He was also Hagath an arms dealer in DS9, Quark's cousin Gaila's business partner.
They should react to that too, it’s a classic, “your the disease, and I’m the cure”.
@@RomanMercado-ms1mw yes! Followed by a back to back of Beverly Hills Cop 2. I just realized both films have Brigitte Nielsen!
That's why all of Axels' old Detroit friends (Michael Tandino, Jennie Summers) are Italian, they were cast when Stallone was going to be the lead
@@charlize1253 Oh that explains it
I love that ya got this movie. It’s one of my favorite Eddie Murphy films of all time. Ya got exactly who Axel Foley was/is as a character.
1984... great year for movies.
Loved revisiting this '80s classic!
Loves how u guys highlight everyone who is in the 4th one
I love Kristen’s scream. lol. 😂😊
"How many times can you say 'banana in the tailpipe'? " .... "Yes!"
Great spot Achara..Yes that was Damon Wayans giving him the bananas 🙂
the theme was my ringtone for a few years, so i guess i like this movie!
Thanks!
Thank you!
Eddie Murphy at his best.
Serge had his own TV show.
Well Serge didn't have his own show but Bronson Pinchot did; he was in a show in the 80/90s with Mark Linn Baker called Perfect Strangers
I saw it in theaters with my Mom when i was around 10. Still love it.
Between Beverly Hills Cop, 48 hours, Coming to America, and Trading Places, Eddie Murphy ruled the 80s.
I never saw the third movie, but the second one is good and worth a watch,
Another great, underrated comedy cop movie is Hollywood Homicide (2003), with Josh Hartnett and Harrison Ford.
I can tell you right now, Beverly Hills Cop 2 is also worth a watch, it's hilarious and just awesome. Boomerang and The Nutty Professor are worth watching too, their great movies
Was 10 In 1984.Miss Those Years.
I was 16. Yeah I miss it
We were very fortunate to experience it
I luv how in the sequel they still remain close. Beverly Hills Cop 2 is a must-see/watch..along.
"Alphabet Bandit".
Im loving Kristen's smile. extreme cuteness 😍
Beverly Hills Cop II is just as good, one of the best sequels ever
@33:01 Billy’s bravery is generally under-appreciated here. He stood in the line of fire and carefully aimed before shooting. Some may say he was dumb, but to me, that’s a badas- moment.
Eddie improvised that whole super cops story at 20:20. You can see John Ashton totally losing it. 😀
Eddie Murphy is part of my childhood!
Required watching includes 48 Hours and Trading Places.
Thank you Eddie for a wonderful time you have given us.🌹👍
@0:20 ...and THEN, ur Detroit audience goes "bye, bye". 😂😂😂😂
Beverly Hills Cop 2 is definitely worth watching and reacting to.
Despite tough competition, this ended up being the highest grossing film of 1984!
Gilbert R. Hill, who played Inspector Todd, was a real life Homicide detective.
No he was a captain
I always thought his character was so good. That's amazing. I wish he had more screen time.
@@wiseoldman53 it was his first acting job and he said he never yelled at the people that worked under him like he does in this movie
He was also corrupt and tried to hire a hit man to kill an FBI informant that wanted reveal information about Hill who got payed a bribe by a major drug dealer in order to quash the investigation into a 13- year-old boy's murder.
Please continue the franchise
Can't wait to see your reactions to 2 & 3!
Being from Detroit yes it’s lovely and we still love u Achara🥰🥰😂😂
I was born in 1984 ... I'm painfully aware that this movie is now 40 years old now. lol
Yep, Serge is my favorite character in this one.
Bless the algorithm for this popping up on my feed only three minutes after upload.
“It looks awful….oh it’s Detroit “ just made my heart sink 😣😣 we’re on the up up lol
At 12:44 - Yes he's a Wayans brother, that was Damon Wayans
A young Damon Wayans.
